Human history is full of gruesome power struggles, cruel executions, sickening genocides, famine, disease, and history facts sometimes seems unappealing and grim, to say the least. Luckily, Twitter account @MemesOnHistory is shedding some light on our past's interesting facts by using the internet's most beloved funny memes.

The best part, however, is that almost all of these historical memes are so accurate, publishers could even include them in their textbooks. And they should. Students would probably relate to history memes better and understand the historical events better if, for example, SpongeBob SquarePants excerpts were used to illustrate the Second World War or US Middle East Policy. Scroll down to enjoy this list of some of the best memes, compiled by Bored Panda, and while you're at it, pay attention and learn some funny history facts, why don't you!

Well as Robin Williams once said. "If women ran the world we wouldn't have wars, just intense negotiations every 28 days."

'All of history' since the 15th/16th century. History is more than the 'white man's' civilisation.

If dead people is the goal, then the sudden 14th century Little Ice Age, which caused everyone to huddle inside, is by far the biggest winner.

You mean 1 plague carrying gerbil. It's a common misconception that rats started the plague. It was actually gerbils that brought it to Europe.

This is the modern theory but I guess even if rats didn't start it, they spread it because they were way more than the gerbils

The rats were carriers, unaffected by Yersinia pestis, the plague virus that was in their blood, spread by the fleas that infested them.

The 25 million Europeans. The plague would kill the rat first.

It seems a little unlikely that one rat killed that many people. Most likely a boatload of rats infested that then multiplied.

Admittedly beside the point of the nice meme, but flags of countries that didn't even participate are present, while flags of participating countries like Italy - that not only did participate, but is also in the top 5 of most casualties - are missing.

Considering that there has been warfare all over the inhabitable parts of the globe at some point or another, I think if westerners wouldn't have done it, someone else would have. Afterall, greed is a human condition.

Prohibition didn't completely ban alcohol. Commercial production and sale of alcoholic beverages was banned, as was importation, but private citizens were allowed to brew beer for personal consumption. Commercial breweries had to keep alcohol content below 0.5%, but many managed to stay afloat by selling brewing supplies to the public.

Late start of operations, bad condition of the roads in Russia, the russians strategy of retreating in towards Syberia and seting fire to everything they couldn't take so the enemy won't find any resurces... basically every time some nation tried to invade them got caught there by the winter and got defeated by the hard weather conditions for wich they were not prepered

It wouldn't change the outcome, if it had been some other guy with a different name one year later. Columbus was just an adventurer, not an evil mastermind. Blame the politicians in Europe for that.

1) The war known as the Great War is WW1. 2) As it may be true that antisemitism did exist from a long time ago, it wasn't really used as a campaign folly until after the events of WW1. 3) The helmet and cross shown are of the German Empire, not the third reich. 4) Italy and Germany were allies for WW2, not WW1.

Why are there so many communist memes? John's having a political-bitching field day. No offense John. Maybe offense John? I don't know. I'm not a Communist, but you're really whiny about how much you think they suck.
