Internet memes have been a widely used visual form of online rhetoric since the early 2000s. Today they have become a prominent method of communication across the internet, but as a research subject, they're still not very well-examined.

With 20 years of communicating in memes, we still don’t know their exact implications, says Rebecca Ortiz, an assistant professor of advertising at the Newhouse School. “Research on internet meme effects is still in its infancy. But we can look to past media effects research to hypothesize how people may be influenced by them.”

We should never underestimate the power that social media and the content that’s surfing there has on our beliefs, identities, and culture. “The most shareable content on social media will reach the most people and potentially have the greatest effect,” she said.

Think of memes as bits of humor that capture shared cultural meanings and speak to some of the largest audience on our planet. “[They] are some of the most shareable pieces of content on social media and therefore they deserve scrutiny and better understanding as to how they may influence us,” Ortiz explained.

In that sense, understanding a meme is a way to bond with people and feel a strong sense of community. We as humans are wired to do so, so memes are the perfect gateway to that.

what would you have us do? invade the place? even if we had justification, we'd loose the pr war. sanctions? china doesn't care, we still loose the pr war. provide asylum? maybe... but how do we get them here? and how do we convince China to let them come? no single nation is going to act against china... and they've too much influence to get an international community response. (why do you think they're investing in global infrastructure all around the world?)

Politics play an enormous role. The rest of the world looked the other way because Germany was seen as a buffer between Europe and the threat of Communist Russia. Japanese microbiologist Dr. Shiro Ishii was never brought to trial for his war crimes against Chinese citizens during the Second Sino-Japanese War. From 1937 to 1945, Ishii detonated bombs amid hapless victims strapped to vertical platforms, performed autopsies on the dead, vivisections on the survivors. He dropped bombs carrying the bubonic plague and studied the effects of the disease on the local population. When the Japanese surrendered to Allied forces, Ishii offered his volumes of meticulous medical studies on human subjects in exchange for his freedom. The Allied medical communities came to his rescue: such data on human subjects was invaluable. Ishii and his culpable colleagues were granted immunity.

This is scarily true and not remotely funny. One of the things one of my history teachers told our class when we were learning about the years leading up to ww2 is that Hitler was one of the greatest leaders the world had seen until the war kicked off and his clear obsession of cleansing Europe and the rest of the world was apparent. If a country is seen as being successful be it from high employment levels, manufacturing, good infrastructure, housing etc, then everything must be ok. But dig a little deeper and you find some deeply sinister things. I think the issue with China is not only is the government corrupt, media being controlled and ridiculous infrictions on its citizens, but, most countries are dependent on being able to source cheaper labour and manufacturing from there. The western world has a lot to answer for, and I'm not entirely sure how this one will be resolved without a substantial number of casualties. Sorry for the long ramble & apologies for poor grammar etc.

I dount it. However the vast bulk of Concentration Camp victims were from other countries and there were no "Jew Concentration Camps" all the camps contained a wide variety of victims: Jews, Gypsies, Communists, Homosexuals, Career Criminals, Soviet POW etc etc. Hitler certainly hated Jews but eventually he would have got around to everyone.

^Same. Economics is the main driving factor in making foreign morality so flexible (i.e. how much money China is worth for us), and considering Hitler was starting to roll out the (frankly phenomenal) VW Beetle, other countries would have been much too content to stand up.

Nothing to believe. Other countries were pretty aware of all the injustice happening to Jews long before Nazis invaded other countries. They knew it and not only they do not intervened, they even declined to accept Jewish refugees into their countries indirectly sentencing them to death

They pretty much did anyway. FDR knew, many Jews in the US knew and they asked FDR to do something and he told them, literally, to "shut up." What Mao did, what Xi is doing what Stalin did, the world knew but they called it an "internal problem" and none of anyone's business. The Nuremberg Trials were only done because of the massive media coverage of the "liberation" of the Concentration Camps. Not a word in Russia about what happened. Stalin was happy and he started his own genocide with regard to Jews, his death is the only thing that stopped it.

There's no way to tell, since the true death camps were only built in invaded countries. There were concentration camps on German territory where countless people were murdered, but they still kept the air of "work camps" and lacked mass killing facilities. Maybe, if those were the only ones that had existed, the world would have ignored them for quite some time.

ALL other countries initially looked the other way after learning about the concentration camps. Just as bad if not worse, many other countries wouldn't grant Jewish refugees asylum in those countries. The U.S.A. for example refused a ship in 1939. Canada did the same thing in 1939. A ship with Jewish refugees left Romania on Dec. 12, 1941. It was in port at Istanbul with a non-working engine. In Feb. 1942, the Turkish government had the ship pushed out to sea. Within hours, the boat was torpedoed and only one person survived.

Yep. The US probably would have ignored them too until Pearl Harbor. Which means Germany probably would have taken over Europe & America would be on it's own. It's probably good in the long run that Japan attacked Pearl Harbor or we might all be under Nazi rule now. A lot of famous people supported the Nazi's.

Sadly it has been like that throughout history. But it's not like I don't get it either despite having one of these genocides happened in a neighboring country. Those being slaughtered aren't their citizens. They have no obligation to rock the boat. Say they do something, there will be inevitable backlash from their own citizens on military spending and sticking their noses where they don't belong. Also if said country is third world with no valuable resources, I doubt there is any incentive to "peacekeep". Now if there are say petroleum or rare earth, then it's different.

China is literally putting people in concentration camps right now. Read about the Uyghur genocide. It might not have hit millions yet, but they are working on it. -- That's the actual point of this post, China is doing what the Nazis did and the world cares so little that it hasn't hit your news feed and you aren't aware of it.

China saved a lot of Jewish people in WW2 by giving them sanctuary. The story of Uyghurs being incarcerated is a pike of US propaganda; the irony being the some were actually imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay, but no one talks about that....
