Internet memes have been a widely used visual form of online rhetoric since the early 2000s. Today they have become a prominent method of communication across the internet, but as a research subject, they're still not very well-examined.

With 20 years of communicating in memes, we still don’t know their exact implications, says Rebecca Ortiz, an assistant professor of advertising at the Newhouse School. “Research on internet meme effects is still in its infancy. But we can look to past media effects research to hypothesize how people may be influenced by them.”

We should never underestimate the power that social media and the content that’s surfing there has on our beliefs, identities, and culture. “The most shareable content on social media will reach the most people and potentially have the greatest effect,” she said.

Think of memes as bits of humor that capture shared cultural meanings and speak to some of the largest audience on our planet. “[They] are some of the most shareable pieces of content on social media and therefore they deserve scrutiny and better understanding as to how they may influence us,” Ortiz explained.

In that sense, understanding a meme is a way to bond with people and feel a strong sense of community. We as humans are wired to do so, so memes are the perfect gateway to that.

Ok I feel like I'm shitting on my country so let me explain a little XD. The situation in Pakistan has drastically improved ove the last decade and we're starting to get quite a fair amount of tourists. However, our country hasn't invested a lot in museums, heritage sites and tourist infrastructure so I think our artifacts are better off in western countries for now, where more people can view them. If you plan on visiting Pakistan, there's still a lot we have to show, just not behind glass in some aircon building. For example, just 1.5 hours from my house is a Buddhist stuppa with Buddhist statues dating back to the 2nd century! Soo yeah I really don't mind, but of course I can't speak on behalf of all Pakistanis or South Asians.

For all of you who feel that your countries are not protecting your national treasures and you feel some mistaken gratitude for other countries "saving" them, let's talk about colonies, invasions, about corruption from oil and mining companies, weapon industries etc in your lands.

The deeper you look into history the more you realize that all over the world there was a lot of invasions, war, slavery, genocide and even colonies.

That's a big controversy in Germany right now. Not only did the German Empire commit its own atrocities in foreign countries and collected cultural artifacts for museums, people also bought them in bulk from the British! Now, some politicians in Berlin thought it would be a great idea to rebuild a palace from scratch with millions they don't have to house exactly this kind of artifacts.

There's an empty platform at the acropolis museum in Athens for the final statue in a set that used to hold up a pavilion. There's a passive aggressive little plaque too. It's iconic. I wonder if the British museum will ever actually give it to them.

Also, please definitely talk about your salaries. The only one who doesn't want you to talk about your salaries is your employer -- and that's so they don't have to pay everyone fairly. As workers, demand what you're worth. Talk about your salaries.

The British explored the world, often to create maps of uncharted areas of the world, not every artifact was prised from a murdered black person like some people seem to believe
