To learn more about why these memes are so popular, we contacted Dr. Constantina Katsari, who has a Ph.D. in economic history and a long and successful career in UK academia.

"I always thought that history is instrumental in the formation of logical thinking," Dr. Katsari told Bored Panda.

"Without it, critical analysis remains deficient. At the same time, history teaches good citizenship and enhances political instincts. Above all, history helps us distinguish truth from lies. As a seeker of truth, I especially value the skills I acquired over the decades."

Dr. Katsari agrees with the popular phrase that history is written by the victors. "After all, most losers are dead, maimed, politically inactive, or otherwise condemned to invisibility," she explained.

However, there are still ways we can get a different perspective on things. "Saying that, we should not forget the value of archaeology that helps us fill in the gaps and gives a voice to non-victors," Dr. Katsari added.

I remember watching something similar except it was quotes from the Qur'ān vs. quotes from the Christian Bible.People had to guess which ones were from which scripture. Everyone assumed all the violent passages were from the Qur'ān were shocked that they actually came frmo the Christian Bible.

I have been looking for the link, but they did something similar when Obama was in office. They would ask Conservatives at the "Tea Party" Marches about various items, but claim that Bush or the Republicans did them. They were ALL for them. Happy that those they believed they supported would do such great things! Then they were told they were ALL accomplishments of the Obama Administration. Most just shook their heads and walked away. lol. None changed their minds about Obama being a "muslim, socialist, marxist, communist dictator", though. One of the most viral ones they did was when they asked about "The Affordable Care Act" versus "Obamacare". ALL the conservatives loved the Affordable Care Act and they DETESTED Obamacare. They were then informed that Obamacare the ACA were the exact same thing. Their expressions were priceless.

This may ring true to all countries all over the world... The only difference is that the US tries to hide out history because it's not the image we want the world to see. To that I say F*** you. Honesty and truth are the image we should be showing. Not the filtered b******t because we can't handle what we see when we look in the mirro

Its not about hiding it from the world. believe me, Iran, Vietnam, Korea, various South American nations and on and on do not teach OUR version of American History in their schools. The world has its own ways of remembering us. No, the whitewashed version is to allow our government and politicians to deceive our own citizenry, sending us out looking like idiots confidently and arrogantly assuming we are somehow superior and hold a moral high ground. Got to wonder, why? Yes, go digging through history and everyone's hands are dirty. Everyone has their shining moments. We are a young nation. To claim to be the greatest is a pretty childish hubris. It would be better to say, some of our foundations are solid and some are pretty mucky but we have grand plans. Let us always endeavor to do better. But for some reason our leaders ad teachers often insist we are mostly perfect and have little higher to reach. Again, why?

American here… I have studied world history AC & BCE …my whole entire life… all 88 years of it. And I can say, truthfully that there is, without a doubt, not one country or kingdom on our planet that can truthfully claim to be 'innocent' of committing (offensive or defensive) violence, murder, genocide or mass destruction of another country. There is always, only one common denominator … a greedy omnipotent president, dictator, king or religious leader .. ie: Kahn, Hitler, Napoleon, Tito, Stalin, Putin etc. ... to just name a few. The USA is a very young country who has dirty hands mainly from ending wars of oppression... not starting them. Slavery... which was common throughout the world for thousands of years... is USA's one shameful dark time. Please think before condemning a loyal friend.

Does anyone else remember when (i think) one of the late night shows did a "on the streets" segments and asked people if they would support the bombing of agrabah. The fictional city in Aladdin. And an embarrassing amount of them said yes.

Interestingly, some philosophers draw attention to the doubts that may be felt when history is compared with different branches of investigation, such as chemistry or biology.

By contrast with such inquiries, the historian's procedure, including the manner in which he conceptualizes his data and the principles of argument he employs, may appear to be governed by subjective or culturally determined predilections that, as a result, are contestable and, therefore, out of place in a supposedly reputable form of knowledge.

One topic that was repeatedly examined in this context was the role of evaluation (specifically, moral evaluation) in historical writing—a subject, incidentally, about which historians themselves are apt to exhibit a certain uneasiness.

Many argue that value judgment can and should be totally excluded from history and, indeed, from social studies as a whole. However, this viewpoint does have its opponents, too.

Objectors highlight that the language the historian uses, adapted as it is to the assessment and appraisal of human motives and characteristics, makes some degree of evaluation unavoidable.

They argue that, even if the possibility of a drastically revised historical vocabulary allows the ideal of a wertfrei, or objective history, to be theoretically conceivable, such an ideal can scarcely be seriously entertained as a realizable practical goal.

Dr. Katsari agrees with these folks. "There will never be absolute objectivity in history," she said.

"We all start from entrenched beliefs that need to be proved or disproved. Being objective as a historian is a constant struggle that involves rigorous logical exercises."

I wonder if the Romans would have been equally offended when told their empire were declining as the US are when told their country is failing. My first thought is no, as each province still had a local history and identity to hold on to.

So if you find yourself disliking some of these memes, that's good. Emotional and moral conflict is an opportunity for growth.

You can deal with this inner uneasiness by educating yourself on the topic more. "Academic literature is the golden standard," Dr. Katsari suggested. "There are some excellent public historians around that do an amazing job, though."
