For dogs, though, it may be for many reasons, from territory to personality. But the most important territory for any pet is their owner. And the access to your attention can be a biggie.
Bored Panda contacted Ryan Neile, the head of animal behavior at Blue Cross, to find out why some dog siblings don’t get along that well. It turns out, just like human families, "sibling dogs don’t always get along.”
The reason is partly that these family pets do crave their owner’s attention and love the company of their humans. Ryan explained: “Puppies may compete with each other for anything they consider to be important so try and make sure the needs of all dogs in the household are all treated equally—it’s fun to share play, games, and training with all the family to make sure no one is getting left out.”

Most of the sibling rivalry is, contrary to what we think, very subtle. “Owners may not understand the puppy’s paw placed on top of a toy—or your foot—that claims ownership,” writes dog behavior expert Amy in a piece for The Spruce Pets. She reminds us that “the world of dogs is not a democracy.” And this mean there’s likely to be a pet that comes out on top and “the winner may be different from room to room.”
If you’re thinking of introducing a new dog to the household, make sure you do it carefully. “If you have an older dog and are getting a new puppy, it is important to make sure your existing dog isn’t getting tired out or bothered by a super active young puppy,” warns Ryan. It’s up to owners to keep an eye on play and make sure if play gets too excitable, it’s time out. “Excitement and high stimulation can sometimes turn when one dog gets fed up.”

I think getting a puppy when you have an old dog is not the best idea. They have such different needs at these ages and the old dogs should be able to get some peace.
Depends on quite a few things though - some dogs love the company of others and it can really perk them up. Don't forget they are very sociable creatures generally. I've always had two dogs at the same time but different ages and when one passes the other sometimes really misses them. Like humans they are vastly different and their individual needs should be taken into account.

Those are adorable, but I have to say it worries me a little when I see an older, smaller dog get a big baby sibling, because a puppy doesn't really understand it can cause damage to a small dog who might not be as agile or even have fragile bones and so on.
On the flipside of that. We had an old dog that we were convinced wasn't going to last another year, poor old girl was rapidly going backwards. We ended up getting a puppy and our old dog perked right up and was playing like she was a puppy again. She lived another 4 years and I wholeheartedly believe I have that puppy (now an old timer himself) to thank for that.

A good practice is to bring the older dog to be a part of choosing the new dog. Forcing someone on you who then stays sucks and is cruel and unnecessary torture...
Oh lol, we got our 3 year old Lab mix a puppy, 7 months old, because I thought she was lonely. I was soooo wrong. She put the puppy in her place and then the cats bullied her too. Poor baby, but she's sweetie anyway. They were 9 and 6 when I was told I "needed" another dog my daughter rescued, now the middle one is bullied by him too. Old girl just gives him what for when he pushes her too hard about who's the boss. Daily life at the funny farm with three dogs.
We have 3 babies... 11, 4 and 2ys old. Having puppies around keeps our old girl young and active when she probably would just be lazy. The middle pup which we've been with since her day 1( family friends dog puppies) would attempt to nurse on our older girl once we actually brought het home. She is the self proclaimed ring leader and is highly protective of her sisters. Now, the baby...she is a redbone coonhoound and anyone who has a hound in their life knows that they are just lovable idiots.
This doesn't really happen with my dogs, because, I have an Irish Wolf Hound (who is the younger brother) and another dog which is about 30 centermeters tall. The only thing with when my little dog takes the big bed, my big dog is a sook and walks over to me to tell my little dog to get off.
my brother who lives near and visits me a lot got a lab puppy and my Newfie loves him... a bit too much. the poor thing gets smothered with slobber!!! XD
I would never ever bring home a young dog when the other only one is very old. It's a problem because the old one can't play like the young wants and probably his bones hurt. And it's like telling the old dog, you can die whenever you want because I already have a new one. It's different when you already have 2 dogs: one younger who can play with the pup. It's just an addition to the clan, not a substitution.

I have a mini schnauzer (as the username implies), and we just got him a little brother who is half Scottish Deerhound, half Greyhound. As you can imagine, now his little brother is much larger than him and is still very, very puppy-like at only six months old. So this post is basically the story of my life.
The title is so annoying, I'm leaving this hear and then running away from this page quickly. Your adult dog is not your child, and thus a new dog is not their sibling. It's insulting. An adult dog is not your baby or your child. It is an adult animal.
