Some people get upset to see their efforts of creating a delicious homecooked meal go up in flames. Others already have a habit of laughing at their misfortunes and quickly reach for their phones to share pictures with everyone online. There are times, however, when these blunders quickly shift from funny to downright scary and grow into major accidents that might have alarming consequences.

You see, cooking is such a regular activity, we tend to forget that high temperatures can easily cause a fire. A report by The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states that from 2014 to 2018, cooking was the leading cause of reported home fires and fire injuries.

My Cooking Teacher Pinned This Poor Pizza To The Blackboard

OfficerOvaries Report

"Cooking caused an average of 172,900 reported home structure fires per year (49 percent of all reported home fires in the US)," NFPA wrote. These fires had dire outcomes that resulted in 4,820 civilian injuries — that's 44 percent of all reported home fire injuries. The good news is that the vast majority of the reported fires were relatively small.

The most common cause of all of these incidents was unattended cooking. Moreover, clothing was the item first ignited in some of these fires, and cooking oil and grease fires are a substantial part of this whole problem.

The report also showed that an average of 470 cooking-related fires were reported per day in 2018, and the peak days were Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Misophoniakiel Report

According to the Beaumont Emergency Hospital, two-thirds of all domestic fires start in the kitchen, and 350K people are injured by kitchen knives every year, with the most common accidents being burns and lacerations.

They shared that if you want to prevent such massive disasters from happening, always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Other safety advice would be to keep a fire extinguisher close by and make sure your smoke alarm is properly working. Since clothing or paper towels can quickly catch fire, you should keep any potential fire hazards away from stovetops.

I once was mad at my mom because she thought I couldn't carry two full gallons of milk by myself. I was like six. I picked them up, and dropped one. It exploded and spilled EVERYWHERE. I started crying and my mother took a picture of me, crying, mopping up all the milk. She put it in a book and shows pretty much everyone.

Have to agree. And it makes me sad that something that could have made her laugh or calmly tell her mom OOPS is making her so scared and upset that she's crying. Nothing happened that's that bad to warrant her being so upset unless she gets yelled at for things. Go give her a hug, make a joke of it, clean it up and get those huge knives off the counter in the back. You don't need to display you collection of deadly cutlery on a counter top when you have a toddler in the house.

We have a picture of my eldest sitting for their formal pictures when they were 1. They are sitting there in little pigtails holding one lace glove and crying bc the photographer took a little plastic egg prop away. I think it's one of the few Pre-Transition photos they actually enjoy looking at and telling the story about. They were so sweet the lady gave them the plastic Easter egg after to take home! If a Trans person can somehow manage to look back on an embarrassing childhood image like that and laugh, it will be fine. Lighten up.

Oh, that reminds me of my yogurt explosion! Picture seven-year-old girl fixing a bowl of yogurt for breakfast. I spilled a full container of yogurt, it flew through the air and coated the floor, walls, ceiling, myself, and the room beyond in yogurt and landed right-side up, not a drop of white inside. I stood there frozen for about three minutes straight before running to get my mother. She came downstairs and literally screamed when she saw what had happened. You have no idea how awful it was. Like, the whole room and a bit of the next one was just white, everything, ceiling dripping, walls oozing. It was a large container, granted, but to this day I have no idea how I managed to create such a disaster. We were late for school cleaning it up; very late.

Looks like a poor instructor was at the helm. Either they were pathetic teachers, or fools leaving equipment unattended with a small child around. Thankfully she appears to have had the sense not to stick her hand into the operating mixer. But, it could have ended worse. It could have ended with a kid permanently maimed due to their incompetence.

It turns out that people can avoid most cooking accidents by keeping everything clean and organized. Beaumont Emergency Hospital stated that simply decluttering and preventing distractions can go a long way. "Keep the dog (or cat) out of the kitchen, remove pesky throw rugs, don’t use the telephone while cooking, and keep your children away," they wrote. "Clean up kitchen spills as they happen. You don’t want to slip on it later."

"Even the very best chefs make sure everything is prepared in advance, and they know how much time they need to execute certain dishes," Ellen added. "If you're less confident, it's even more important to do this and to build in a bit of extra time so you're not rushing and getting stressed. I've ruined many a meal because I tried to rush, didn't read the recipe in advance and get everything ready, then ended up trying to do too much in too little time, which inevitably causes mistakes," the blogger revealed.
