And I'd add the observation that even Americans who are well aware of the existence of other cultures tend to start from a "non-American is unusual" assumption in a way that people from other countries really can't afford, simply because they encounter more situations where it's plain-out wrong. You might not think it's that bad, but really, it's notable. On a broader scale it's also true for people from the Western world who are more likely to assume the default of Western culture. But the default-nationality-thinking is really a very American phenomenon.

Hmm weird....all of these comments about "dumb Americans" are in English and not Korean. Movies made in non-English-speaking countries are just more accessible to the rest of the world when they're in English and that's why the interviewer asked the question. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Americans. I don't get why this is so hard to understand for some people. Movies in my native language are terrible btw.

It is hard because it feels like the world is so fixated on us. So ready to critisize and belittle us. We are a very young country that has to deal with a colonial and imperial past and present. It is kind of like expecting a 16 year old to be able to be a model adult. We are still a teenager with growing pains. We haven't had millennia to settle in. Italy struggles with similar growing pains. It is such a young country with a very diverse population. It has an imperial past and is a collection of city-states.

No, actually, it's not as it stands. If she'd asked why he'd made it in in Korean, and gone on to say something that put her bringing up the language it was made in into an intelligent context, then she wouldn't sound like someone who can't fathom why a Korean would want to make a film about their home country that has the actors speaking Korean.

Well to be fair 100 miles in three directions and I'm still in the same state. I'm nearly in the same county. Europeans have a much shorter route to many vastly different cultures. And really your comment is pretty elitist. There are quite a few Americans that will never travel outside their state because they lack the financial ability to do so.
