Comeback refers to a quick reply to a critical remark which basically shuts down the critic immediately. The best comebacks are always a step ahead in restoring karma, defending the accused ones, and making that snap which is entertaining to anyone who witnesses it.

And since experiencing a real-life clapback which is both fun and witty is somewhat rare, we turn to the internet, or this Twitter page, to be precise, to give ourselves a masterclass in savage comebacks.

Named “Clever Comebacks,” the page is busy sharing exactly what it promises in the title and from 75.5k followers, it seems like it’s doing a pretty good job. More masterclass comebacks from the same account can be found in our previous feature right here!

In a previous interview, Bored Panda spoke with Abigail Paul, an actress, standup comedian and improviser who has been giving seminars on incorporating theatre techniques for purposes beyond the stage to schools, businesses and organizations.

Abigail argues that the secret to any comeback is connection. “If you are really listening to (and connecting with) another person, you are taking them in fully, aware of who they are, the context in which you are dealing with this person,” she said.

Moreover, according to the comedian, people do this assessment unconsciously. In fact, we aren't even always aware that we are always sizing up other people. “This is too often because we are so focused on ourselves.” A great comeback feels great because it was earned, Abigail argues. “It was spontaneous. The commenter was probably really listening. It was unique to that moment, set of people, situation,” she told us some time ago.

One of the biggest challenges in saying a comeback is making sure it doesn’t sound mean. But Abigail reminds us that a comeback is not a clapback. The latter one “is generally sarcastic, but a clapback might be fun among friends.”

At the same time, the context of a situation always matters. “In working on status exercises in improv, we try to get people to see that the easiest way to raise another person's status is to lower their own. We see that in standup comedy too. Usually it works best if the comic is the butt of the joke, not the audience. (There are plenty of exceptions.)”

And also, expecting them to be happy is first of all sexist, and also dumb because how would they be happy when so many problems plague femalekind, like pink tax, groping, jerks like this guy, etc. Today in my bus some guy apparently pulled up the shirt of & touched this girl in her private parts. That girl is a 4th grader, and that guy is that age or younger! (my school goes from Nursery to 12th grade).

While you don’t need to be too self-effacing for a good comeback, if it can lift other people up, the job is done. “When it works well and gains the speaker a laugh and cements the bond that says, we are in this together,” Abigail explained.

While comebacks can be used as an excellent communication tool, listening skills are the most important thing. “Paying attention, making accurate observations about the people in the room, and how they feel—these are the tools that will make a comeback really shine,” Abigail explained.

The argument in America is that guns don’t kill people. People kill people. That’s very true. But, if you have a gun in your hand it helps. (Paraphrase from memory) credit Eddie Izzard . British comedian, actor and pretty damned smart for saying THIS.

Honestly, I'd be terrified to go to school if they decided to arm teachers. Even if the teacher was nice, knowing they have a functioning gun in their class would be incredibly unnerving, not to mention the possibility of students stealing the gun.

I know it's the least of the practical concerns, but how do these people never think about the issue of friendly fire? How does the response team know said teacher with a gun isn't the original shooter?

I strongly support the 2nd Amendment; please know that we don’t all agree with these…ideas…SMH. That said, what if would-be shooters *thought* there was a good chance their teacher would be armed, would it be a deterrent? Part of the clamor really is a wish to give that impression and prevent school shootings. Everyone wants to prevent school shootings. I’m thinking maybe mental health care for kids who’ve given warning signs? And no more sensational news coverage. If the media could voluntarily agree to that—just be dry and factual for six months? I bet there would be no school shootings during that time

Give teachers conceal & carry, how long before A) teacher shoots a student B) student takes teachers gun to show off C) student takes teachers gun and goes on a shooting D) teachers get robbed for their firearms. I could keep going, but it's depressing to contemplate all the ways this could go wrong.

Do you know how infuriating it can be for a teacher to try and get a whole class of kids/teens to be quiet and pay attention? Do you remember how obnoxious some kids were towards the unpopular teacher? Giving that teacher a gun, is definitely not gonna save lives, lol.

There's no possible way that plan could backfire, naturally. Little old Enid who works in the library? I'm sure she could singlehandedly take on a couple of youths with assault rifles. Also, who is training these staff members? Do they get a stint in the Army? And why give guns to staff in the first place? Give this person the Nobel Peace prize. Yeesh.

And on the rare occasions you do, it always turns out to be an off-duty cop or off-duty military member; in other words, someone who is actually trained to use guns in a live-fire situation, not an enthusiastic amateur with an erection.

Yeah, actually I can easily imagine those female stereotypes being more valiant than cops, thank you for the misogyny. Since 90%+ of gun violence is committed by men, can you leave women out of this? Better yet, consider a law that only women can possess guns. Imagine a world where women do not have to fear men

19 trained officers sat outside for an hour. They weren't trying to come up with an attack plan. They were simply disorganized, with s****y leadership. What we "expect" is that people who are actually in a position to have to defend their lives have the option to do so.

The yelling on both sides is the problem. If you want to solve gun violence, you need to solve the underlying causes. Guns wont be banned. That is the reality. We need to work to teach our children and society that life is valuable and fleeting. We also need better mental healthcare options. And most importantly we need to help everyone who suffers from socioeconomic problems that lead to the majority of gun violence. If we do those things, then the ability ban certain kinds of weapons will be a hell of a lot easier since the fear mongering cant be used anymore.

I think if we ban guns, the yelling from both sides would still be there. I think the best way to limit gun violence might be better restrictions. I (think) another country has similar restrictions to this: You have to sign up to get a gun, with very heavy restrictions. You have to have a good reason to own a gun. You have to take a gun safety course. You have to do this every year or two. Ofc there will always be people who steal guns, get them illegally. But this might limit it. I don't think banning this will ever turn our well.
