Comeback refers to a quick reply to a critical remark which basically shuts down the critic immediately. The best comebacks are always a step ahead in restoring karma, defending the accused ones, and making that snap which is entertaining to anyone who witnesses it.

And since experiencing a real-life clapback which is both fun and witty is somewhat rare, we turn to the internet, or this Twitter page, to be precise, to give ourselves a masterclass in savage comebacks.

Named “Clever Comebacks,” the page is busy sharing exactly what it promises in the title and from 75.5k followers, it seems like it’s doing a pretty good job. More masterclass comebacks from the same account can be found in our previous feature right here!

In a previous interview, Bored Panda spoke with Abigail Paul, an actress, standup comedian and improviser who has been giving seminars on incorporating theatre techniques for purposes beyond the stage to schools, businesses and organizations.

Abigail argues that the secret to any comeback is connection. “If you are really listening to (and connecting with) another person, you are taking them in fully, aware of who they are, the context in which you are dealing with this person,” she said.

Moreover, according to the comedian, people do this assessment unconsciously. In fact, we aren't even always aware that we are always sizing up other people. “This is too often because we are so focused on ourselves.” A great comeback feels great because it was earned, Abigail argues. “It was spontaneous. The commenter was probably really listening. It was unique to that moment, set of people, situation,” she told us some time ago.

One of the biggest challenges in saying a comeback is making sure it doesn’t sound mean. But Abigail reminds us that a comeback is not a clapback. The latter one “is generally sarcastic, but a clapback might be fun among friends.”

At the same time, the context of a situation always matters. “In working on status exercises in improv, we try to get people to see that the easiest way to raise another person's status is to lower their own. We see that in standup comedy too. Usually it works best if the comic is the butt of the joke, not the audience. (There are plenty of exceptions.)”

And also, expecting them to be happy is first of all sexist, and also dumb because how would they be happy when so many problems plague femalekind, like pink tax, groping, jerks like this guy, etc. Today in my bus some guy apparently pulled up the shirt of & touched this girl in her private parts. That girl is a 4th grader, and that guy is that age or younger! (my school goes from Nursery to 12th grade).

While you don’t need to be too self-effacing for a good comeback, if it can lift other people up, the job is done. “When it works well and gains the speaker a laugh and cements the bond that says, we are in this together,” Abigail explained.

While comebacks can be used as an excellent communication tool, listening skills are the most important thing. “Paying attention, making accurate observations about the people in the room, and how they feel—these are the tools that will make a comeback really shine,” Abigail explained.

Honestly, I've been embarrassed to be a teen. I hated it when I was watching movies with my family and the characters won't stop repeating oh she's just a teenager now. You know how many times I heard I miss how you were when you were a younger.

Don't be embarrassed. Being a teen is great, it's the time you can really figure out who you are, what you really like. You can try new things and jobs and have some fun while the consequences aren't as high as they will be as an adult out in your own having to be self sufficient.

She’s entirely right. Stand your ground on this. Adults should remember that we were teenagers once and things got said to us and about us. We did not appreciate it either. But, consider this teenagers. One day you’re going to be “us”. Keep it in mind always and when you reach there don’t be the adults you can’t stand now. Be the first in history to think and behave differently.

Jenni, I’m 62 now, and when I was young my generation said the same thing to the older generations. Then so many of my cohorts f*****g BECAME them! Please take this as a warning to be on the lookout for your generation to become too comfortable and too complacent, if you’re lucky enough to live in and profit by times of plenty, and forget to change the world for the better. So many of my generation dropped the ball because of that, which makes me ashamed. While there’s nothing wrong with being successful in whatever field you pursue, please keep your determination to make the world a better place for everybody once you get there. Please. You may be our last best chance.

Warning recieved. Gen Z isn't perfect. There are many jerks and bullies among us, and even more people who don't stand up against them. Thankfully, not everyone is this way, so we'll make sure the others don't bring us down (like the ones who HAVE to have the newest clothes and will make fun of those who don't, not caring about the effects of this on the environment).

I agree, we really have to stop with the ageist mindset. It's really damaging to people growing up and their trust towards people and the world. Having the first 18-20 years of your life with your opinions/thoughts/feeling being dismissed and treated less than a human by elders is really messed up.

People below 20 are just way more childish than they think. It is quite easy to develop a habit of dismissing them - which is obviously wrong, but when you hear the n-th teenager proclaiming to be an adult and know everything best it is hard to not to.

It is not because people have forgotten how is it to be a teen. It is precisely because we remember, and we cannot understand why we were how we were and what in the hell made us do all the stupid/cringy/crazy things back then. Or think we should be treated as adults while sixteen. Also, teen phase is hard for parents due to them getting used to something completely different for years and suddenly having to shift roles. They need external help a lot of times to catch up :)

Not to mention that teen 'moodyness' is developmentally appropriate. If your teen is perfectly behaved 24/7, that is NOT healthy nor is it teaching them emotional regulation skills they will need as an adult. Being 'moody' as a teenager is not embarassing. Its bc teenagers aren't mini-adults, they aren't done growing.
