Imagine, if you will, a world without cats. Can you picture it? YouTube probably wouldn't exist because there'd be no cat videos to watch, dogs would have nothing to be scared of and would become insanely confident as a result, and humans would have nobody to puke in their slippers and claw their face in the middle of the night for no particular reason. Kind of a terrifying prospect, right? Fortunately for us however, cats do exist, and the world is a much funnier place because of them. He just wants to be part of the family. Having meals together is the best way to encourage that. He's just teaching his parents.
My cat does that too but I think she does it as a way to empathize with you. She normally eats at night if she's hungry.
Our kitty Charley is uneasy eating alone too - we lost two kitties earlier this year (horrible year), and ever since he usually has breakfast in the office with us...walks away from his food otherwise, even though he's hungry. Poor bub.
I believe , when cats live in the same household for a period of time, they become attached to each other. I had one of our cats die of natural causes, but the other cat in the house got really depressed(it seemed) and avoided eating or drinking water even, near the end..almost like mourning. :(

there is no real explanation to that behaviour tho, cats are social eaters (pack animals) so its normal.

Social eater! My dog mostly does it too. There are ways of "weaning" them from depending of you to be around to eat. Would be a good idea to wean him just enough that he doesn't suffer if u ever need!to leave him for long periods of time, ie vacation, work trips, etc.
My cat does the same sometimes. She will meow and make me follow her to the food bowl and will start eating while im standing next to her. I think it is something to do with being anxious about their food, or someone taking it from them. Also every time i return from work, she runs to eat, and it seems she would touch her bowl for the whole time i was gone.

Everytime i played my cat with light spot, or light reflected by mirror, or string attached a fish in the end waving as "S", he never follow, always look at my hand or whats in my hand instead....i feel so failure.......
Proof that regardless of species....once you have kids you'll never be in the bathroom alone ever again.
