When Lucas Turnbloom and his wife rescued a sweet but rambunctious little cat back in 2017, their lives changed forever. Now, Lucas’ adorable black and white ‘How To Cat’ comics, which are loosely based on the adventures of Sweetie the cat, have become a global hit and we’ve fallen in love with the cute but crazy feline.

The artist revealed that his comics started out as an inside joke between him and his wife. However, she insisted that he put the illustrations up on the net for everyone to enjoy. Things took off from there!

My cat may be deaf and senile yet she is blessed with a magical six sense to appear out of thin air when it is lunch or dinner time.

My cat. Our tortie. She can spot food on a plate at 50 yards, but not a treat under her nose!

I've read that cats have a harder time seeing close objects. I don't know if that is true or not.

If you put anything on the floor directly in front of them they will not be able to see it.

We have a ginger cat that I caught eating a chipmonk(before we made him ours and he is an indoor cat) but can't find the piece of chicken on the floor! This is real life:)

Due to their greatly enhanced perception of depth (compared to humans) can't see a darn thing closer than 11 inches (30 cm.)

If it is right under their nose they actually can't see it. Better to put it a bit forward and off to one side or the other. Of course just because they beg for it they don't always want to eat what we have. I often let our cat smell a tiny bit of whatever we are going to eat. He walks off and I throw that tiny scrap away. It is less waste than giving him something he doesn't want. He just wanted to check out what we had and either goes to get his own food or goes and lays down.

Cats have great dark and distance vision, but can’t see things right in front of their face. They use their whiskers to sense things that close.

We used to wonder what the heck our cat was looking at from across the room and it would turn out to be a bug on the window that was so tiny we could hardly see it close up. Cat's have lousy sight close up which is why they have to sniff round for their food.

Les chat ont une excellente vue de loin, mais à contrario, très mauvaise de près. C'est pour ça qu'ils ne voient jamais la petite friandise qu'on leur donne à la main (ou qui est tombée par terre).

Cats are far-sighted by default and thus have difficulties seeing things that are too close ;)

That sounded wrong to me so I did a quick google... Cats are actually quite near-sighted compared to humans (need to be 20m away to see something as well as a human does from 100-200m away), but also struggle to focus on something right in front of them. They have a very large lens that can capture a lot more light- but also can't change its shape as much as a human's, so they can only focus a narrow range. Similar for the slit pupil - it can be opened really wide in dim light, but can also be narrowed tight so the cats highly light-sensitive vision doesn't get overwhelmed. Great adaption for an animal that hunts at dusk and dawn - but you need a round pupil to focus well, so the cats' slit pupil in bright light means they can't see things as sharply. This article was very informative and seems well-grounded in science (I'm in Biology and it didn't disagree with anything I learned, other than many others on the topic...): https://www.cathealth.com/cat-health/vision/1327-feline-vision

Lucas and his wife found Sweetie at a shelter after she had been in and out of several homes. According to the artist, it took the cat around a month to open up and relax around her new owners.

According to Lucas, Sweetie is, well, a very sweet cat. However, she can also get a bit crazy with her shenanigans. Fortunately, it’s a positive thing. It brings a lot of joy to the artist and his family. What’s more, the catto is a constant inspiration for Lucas’ comics.

“I’m so happy people have found joy in this silly little comic. I hope to continue it for years to come,” Lucas said earlier about his desire to keep on drawing and making all of us cat and humor-lovers happy for as long as possible.

Before “How To Cat” took off, Lucas was mostly known for his Scholastic graphic novel series ‘Dream Jumper.’ You can check out the first volume right here.

Lucas considers himself to be an artist, cartoonist, illustrator, author, and guitarist. He, his wife, two sons, and Sweetie all live in San Diego, in Southern California.

My cat gave people a great Zoom close-up of her nostrils a few weeks back. Yeah. This.

Every time! Or if we sit on the floor to play a board game, she's all over it and us (oh this must be cardboard square cat patting time!)
