Emotions are a complex thing. Anyone would say that sadness feels bad, and laughing feels good. But the human psyche is so much more complicated than that, and things are never just black and white.

So in order to see how that works in practice, we’re diving into a collection of posts that will simultaneously crack a smile, and leave you pretty sad. And thanks to the corner of Reddit “Funny And Sad,” which is home to 726k members, there’s a lot to choose from!

Get ready for a very nuanced experience of internet consumption where jokes meet tough reality, and where the reality is not always funny. After you’re done, be sure to check out part 1 of the post right here.

Previously, we spoke with Dr. Lise Deguire, a clinical psychologist and the author of “Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience From a Burn Survivor” who said that occasional sadness is a normal part of life.“Happiness and sadness are both normal feelings that naturally arise through life's inevitable ups and downs. When people are numb to their feelings, or try to avoid feelings altogether, they won't experience sadness, but they won't experience much happiness either,” she explained.

However, some people may be more susceptible to sad emotions than others. This may be due to many reasons, but previous experiences, genetics, and mindsets are largely to blame. “This can be partly genetic and partly due to negative life experiences. Mindset is also a factor,” Lisa told us.

“People who tend to be pessimistic, who dwell on the future anxiously, and who ruminate negatively about the past can experience more sadness. However, these are cognitive bad habits that can really be helped by psychotherapy.”

But most of the posts in this article have to do with the fact that they make a point which is presented in a funny way but is in itself not that funny. Quite on the contrary, many examples present cases of what could be called “a hard truth” which is, as we know very well, a pretty hard thing to swallow.

In a previous interview, Susan Petang, a certified life coach who runs The Quiet Zone Coaching, told Bored Panda that if the truth is something we don’t agree with, it will be uncomfortable to hear it because it all has to do with our core beliefs and values, and the way we view the world.

“When what we believe to be true about ourselves, situations, other people, or the world in general is at odds with what we observe, the result is cognitive dissonance—when our beliefs and our observations are at odds. This can cause considerable stress,” she explained.

all that money went to military equipment suppliers... they cringe at the thought of giving it to health care since they are for the most part well-fed with the insurance systems in place now... since the Afghan war is over, they will find some new way to justify more trillions of deficit spending... just hope the jerks don't start WW3

Because universal Health Care in the US would cost $8,767,123,287 a day according to the CBO estimate. Not to mention $50 trillion in unfunded liabilities for its first 10 years, not included in the previous costs. The US govt already spends $2,191,780,821 a day currently on Health Care just between Medicare and Medicaid.

I did read this report and there is one big problem with it - they use current level of costs in calculations! This is unreasonable, because negotiating power of single payer system would drastically reduce it (insulin for 400$ while there is 20 times cheaper alternative as an example).

I think you'll find that was the amount spent by the entire coalition too. I can't remember where but I read the US contributed about $80m per day. Still a large amount but nowhere near the 300m quoted here. I can't believe I've had to scroll this far down in the comments to see this pointed out by someone. Clearly a lot of people don't question wildly inaccurate statistics quoted without a source!

All that money for nothing. If they invested in global heathcare and economic projects, people will have better prospects, can make their living in their country and then they will not longer support Taliban or other extremist groups. It's when people suffer, have no stable income or food that extremist groups can take advantage of the situation.

Because GUNS! GODDAMMIT! The side that pushes for ridiculous allowances, everybody needs to be able to have a magazine for their .50 caliber which will hold, at a minimum, 50 rounds because you never know when the government is going to go all wild west on your ass and try to impose ALL of the various evils that said government has spent 200+ years actively fighting against. It is, without doubt, an absolute fact that the Forefathers of THIS GREAT COUNTRY anticipated this wild west behavior and The Right To Bear Arms clause in the document of Bills rights clearly indicates that the average Citizen of THIS GREAT COUNTRY is actually allowed to own (bear), at the very least, the highest level of defensive weapon which THIS GREAT COUNTRY fields as well as, at least, one pair of bear arms. Front or back is up to the bearer. Hopefully the dripping sarcasm is/was evident from the second word of this post. But yeah, the priorities in the grand old U.S. of A. are sorely lacking.

So we're all just gonna pretend that less than $1 per person per day would've been enough to provide us all with free health care? Do any of you comprehend basic mathematics? 333 million people. $300 million a day. That comes out to about 90 cents per person, per day. You can't get a single dose of Tylenol with that, gtfoh.

On the other hand, when we talk about truth, we have to be aware of the fact that it’s really a question of perception. Unless it’s a stated, scientifically-backed up fact, or a law of nature, all truths can be challenged. “So, what I have experienced as 'truth' may not be what you have experienced as 'truth.' For example, one could say that the truth is that water boils at 212 degrees. Or does it? If you use the metric system, water boils at 100 degrees,” Susan said.
