Emotions are a complex thing. Anyone would say that sadness feels bad, and laughing feels good. But the human psyche is so much more complicated than that, and things are never just black and white.
So in order to see how that works in practice, we’re diving into a collection of posts that will simultaneously crack a smile, and leave you pretty sad. And thanks to the corner of Reddit “Funny And Sad,” which is home to 726k members, there’s a lot to choose from!

The Most United States Thing To Say About The United States Ever
Poor Mom
I had exactly the same conversation with my Korean friend. It's pointless to explain the difference to rednecks screaming go back to China in your face.
Yeah, those are the same racists yelling that to First Nations people too.
Load More Replies...This is why representation is so important. Asian celebrities frequently tweet about white people getting them confused. (See Priyanka Chopra and Jameela Jamil; Aziz Ansari and Hasan Minhaj; etc.) More representation would fix this. More representation of different languages would also fix folks lumping all Asian languages together and, hopefully, fix the racist notion that all people who speak a certain language are bad in the first place.
I think it's sad that people want to listen in to other people's convos so bad they get racist. I mean if I her you talking to her mate about the cars maintenance and I chime in and act to be part of the conversation that's weird but someone speaking Spanish I'm allowed to interrupt and belittle them(because I don't understand) and claim good ol' Merica as my reasoning. Can someone explain that
I love listening to people speak other languages. I always butt in as I'm leaving and tell them how beautiful their language is. And say 'thank you' in it if I know how. I had two college students teach me several words in Farsi once. And laugh at my accent. I loved that I could make them laugh! سپاسگزارم
Load More Replies...White-on-white racism: once upon a time, the ancestors of Steven Spielberg and Frank Sinatra were considered the dregs of society by various white folks in North America.
Load More Replies...I feel like I've seen this before, either here or elsewhere. Personally, I would not be able to tell the difference between many languages, simply because I'm not really exposed to many. I have nothing against people of different...well anything really, but if someone asked me "what is he speaking?", I would likely have no clue. I get that this is targeted at people who hear a different language and immediately their head goes up their a**e, just saying that not knowing or recognizing a language in itself is not racist.
I agree i also can't tell the difference especially in Asian languages that i don't hear often! I started the last year to watch Korean shows and i have to say that now I'm able to tell them apart with Chinese and Japanese! Before that they were all the same to me
Load More Replies...Americans yell "Speak English" if they hear you talking in any language but English. All they know is that what you said wasn't American English. It's quite rare that Americans will take the time to speak your native language. Too much work to them despite the American slogan being patriotically said like the gospel "hard work pays off". ( It's a lie no one wants to face) Hell they even tell English (British) people to speak English.
*Some Americans. The ironic thing is that the US has always been a melting pot and it does not have an official language.
Load More Replies...Awwwwww. Some people are so ignorant! I always found all languages, cultures fascinating. I am so glad I am not a judgmental turd. I am sorry so many people deal with lack of humanity, empathy, education and morals. Such a shame, such a disgrace and so selfish. I bet your mother is a beautiful person 💜
Reminds me of the time when a Thai friend was stopped by police in El Paso TX for a traffic violation and they stared talking to him in Spanish.
A woman from the Philippines told me with a smile that Indigenous people in Canada sometimes try to speak to her in their own language. No offense taken.
Load More Replies...Uhm sorry, but maybe some people just don't know the difference? I mean I'm Dutch but get called German a lot. And I don't think those people are racist right away. Why is everything racist right away. Sometimes it's just simply not.
James Tang was telling his mother that racists aren't going to pay attention to language, but to appearance. So not knowing differences is fine (as you have pointed out). Acting on prejudices is not. For example, I knew a heterosexual man who had gay rumours; not a problem for him or his girlfriend. Had someone insulted or attacked him for it, that would have been homophobic.
Load More Replies...Sadly, you won't see anybody speaking German, Russian, Italian or French get berated for not speaking English ... wonder why that is (rhetorical question) ...
Oh but you will, at least in UK. My friend is a blond, blue eyed finn and got told to go back home when she was speaking Finnish with her kids. She's marrid to a brit and lived and worked all over UK for over a decade.
Load More Replies...Speak Indonesian... they would not suspect you're from China!
I don't think people who do not recognize Asian languages are stupid. Do Asian people recognize difference between , let's say, Eastern European languages? I'm not a racist, I work with people from different countries for 15 years (have friends among them) and cannot hear differences between Chinese, Korean or other. Sorry
Not trying to suggest for a moment that this is as bad as what the OP experiences, but in London you don't always even have to look different to attract abuse from racist idiots. It's happened to me quite a few times and I'm white and English. They're just projecting their prejudices onto whatever they think they see.
I honestly believe that being stupid or racist or redneck has nothing to do with the level of education required to differentiate between Asian languages.
Tang's comment is more racist than most racists, in the U.S. at least.
I thought James Tang was pointing out to his mother that racists aren't going to pay attention to her spoken language, but to her appearance. I have no idea how that is racist, let alone worse than using racist epithets and defending gross stereotypes.
Load More Replies...Your mom has hope. Some people never will appreciate and embrace anyone or anything different than themselves. They will forever be trapped in fear and loathing... of themselves.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic, provocative, or naive. Just in case it's that last one, no. There are over two thousand languages spoken in Asia. Research it. Educate yourself.
Load More Replies...Previously, we spoke with Dr. Lise Deguire, a clinical psychologist and the author of “Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience From a Burn Survivor” who said that occasional sadness is a normal part of life.“Happiness and sadness are both normal feelings that naturally arise through life's inevitable ups and downs. When people are numb to their feelings, or try to avoid feelings altogether, they won't experience sadness, but they won't experience much happiness either,” she explained.
However, some people may be more susceptible to sad emotions than others. This may be due to many reasons, but previous experiences, genetics, and mindsets are largely to blame. “This can be partly genetic and partly due to negative life experiences. Mindset is also a factor,” Lisa told us.
“People who tend to be pessimistic, who dwell on the future anxiously, and who ruminate negatively about the past can experience more sadness. However, these are cognitive bad habits that can really be helped by psychotherapy.”

Unfortunate Truth
Too Soon?
But most of the posts in this article have to do with the fact that they make a point which is presented in a funny way but is in itself not that funny. Quite on the contrary, many examples present cases of what could be called “a hard truth” which is, as we know very well, a pretty hard thing to swallow.
In a previous interview, Susan Petang, a certified life coach who runs The Quiet Zone Coaching, told Bored Panda that if the truth is something we don’t agree with, it will be uncomfortable to hear it because it all has to do with our core beliefs and values, and the way we view the world.
“When what we believe to be true about ourselves, situations, other people, or the world in general is at odds with what we observe, the result is cognitive dissonance—when our beliefs and our observations are at odds. This can cause considerable stress,” she explained.

My 12yo wants to live in Iceland when they grow up and I'm encouraging them because I want my kid to have a better life than I've had and getting out of the USA is going to contribute to making that possible.
On the other hand, when we talk about truth, we have to be aware of the fact that it’s really a question of perception. Unless it’s a stated, scientifically-backed up fact, or a law of nature, all truths can be challenged. “So, what I have experienced as 'truth' may not be what you have experienced as 'truth.' For example, one could say that the truth is that water boils at 212 degrees. Or does it? If you use the metric system, water boils at 100 degrees,” Susan said.

Ya, people from other countries on here love to take a poop on America. Why is it so many people want to come here then?

Chinese concentration camps are ALSO outrageous. There are also human rights violations all across the Middle East, Israel is stealing land and homes, there is wholesale destruction of the environment all around the world, there are humanitarian crises on pretty much every continent…….and on and on. The healthcare system can be changed by democratic and concerted effort by the American people, in order to do that it needs to be highlighted and the politicians held to account. The others requires those same politicians to exert pressure on China et al, a regular American citizen can’t contact a foreign official and demand an explanation or indeed change. Instead of undermining legitimate concerns about healthcare how about encouraging positive change AND highlighting the other concerns around the world?
