American pride is something unique to Americans. Over the past two decades up until Trump’s presidency, 81%-92% said they were extremely proud of their American identity, the Gallup data showed. Only this year, the numbers of extremely proud Americans dropped to a record low of 45%.
On the other hand, this alone shouldn’t be reason enough to forget such a seemingly basic fact as what your country’s flag actually looks like. But for some people, a few stars here and there don’t make that big of a difference, until someone points out this is the Liberian flag, or the Chilean flag, or the Malaysian flag.
The cursed emoji everyone has been throwing around may look like the spitting image of an American flag, but hey, guys, why don't we all get our stars, stripes, and proportions right? In the meantime, I can’t deny there’s an element of hilarity to all this. And a big one.

The American flag is the quintessential element of American pride that has been embedded in the nation's DNA since the country's early years. But these past years, the US has been undergoing extreme political and social challenges that have been making its citizens rethink American pride and its values.
The percentage of Americans expressing extreme pride in the country has been declining over the past 20 years, but recently it took a more extreme turn. The latest Gallup data gathered from a May 28-June 4 poll found that less than a quarter of Americans, 20%, are satisfied with the way things are going in the US. Meanwhile, presidential approval fell to 39%.

But Gallup also notes that extreme pride is down among all major subgroups since 2016. In particular, Democratic-leaning groups that include young adults aged 18-29, women, college graduates, and non-whites have been increasingly less likely to express extreme pride over the years.
Interestingly, the Gallup findings showed that Republicans’ national pride marks the largest decline in extreme pride, with a 9% decrease spotted in 2020.

To be fair, emojis are small and can be hard to see, and at first glance it's easy to mistake one flag for the other. Plus, your brain sees what it expects to see so unless someone already knew what the Liberian flag looks like, it can easily be mistaken as the U.S. flag. Yes, some of these people are clearly idiots (like the one who thinks Obama retired rather than facing Trump) but I'd give a lot of them the benefit of the doubt. Seems like honest mistakes.
Why not give them the benefit of the doubt? Because extremely arrogant & aggressive nationalism should be pushed back against at all times. It’s also hypocrisy on their part to act all patriotic but not demonstrate enough understanding of their own country’s flag to choose it in a list of flag emojis. I'm all for calling out the daft things Trump supporters say and do but mistaking one tiny, similar looking flag for another is only funny so many times and other than inattention when making a post social media, doesn't say a thing.
I don't get the obsession with their flag while at the same time they do not even know their flag. Let's face it; 50 white stars on a blue rectangle and 13 red and white stripes aren't too difficult to remember.

If you're going to be patriotic at least take the time to check you've got it right... but then I guess they see stripes and a star and don't even consider that any other country could possibly have a similar flag. If there wasn't a massive list of flags they would hardly grasp the fact that the flags of other countries were in their phones. It does make me laugh that the flag they mistakenly use is Libya, given the history between the two countries!
I feel kinda bad for them, I mean it's their country's own flag and they STILL didn't get it right.

But you only need to look at the other posts on Bored Panda to see that it's a place where liberal, inclusive and LGBTQ issues are expressed through art and discussed. I do not feel any need to draw any flag, but I like that I know many nations have flags similar to the Dutch one and that I have to look carefully when selecting an emoticon like that ;). Also the whole point of automation is to draw it once and never look back. Just imagine in the good old days when you had to draw your flag on your hand written letters...
