Alaskan Malamutes are friendly and energetic, big-eaters, and even bigger fur factories. However, be sure to keep a leash on your big dog because they’re hunters at heart and might go after wildlife if left to roam freely in the vast outdoors. They’re also great climbers and amazing diggers, so keeping these cute dogs behind a fence is a real challenge.

Pupper Then, Doggo Now
This breed of dogs can live up to 12 to 15 years if you give them the proper love and care they deserve. Alaskan Malamutes were bred to pull sleds in harsh winter climates, so they require plenty of exercise. So going for walkies (or rather runnies) is not negotiable! Unless you enjoy hearing your canine howling in frustration, give it plenty of movement.
Malamutes are great with kids. Just keep in mind, they’re large dogs, so it’s still important to supervise playtime between them and your toddlers. Sometimes, dogs don’t realize how big and powerful they are.

My Friend's Malamute Thinks He's A Lap Dog
But before you go jogging off to your local shelter or dog breeder to rescue an Alaskan Malamute, you should be aware of some health issues that this breed has. These adorable animals are at risk of a genetic deformity called hip dysplasia where their hip sockets require surgery to correct. That can be expensive and, if untreated, can lead to arthritis later on. That’s why you should make sure that you have documents showing you that the dog’s parents don’t have this genetic disease.
Alaskan Malamutes are also at-risk when it comes to inheriting polyneuropathy. This means that their nervous system becomes disorderly and can lead to a lack of coordination and weakness. However, if your Malamute’s parents are healthy, your doggo should be, too. So remember to do thorough research beforehand! That way, you’ll have a healthy, happy dog that can bring a smile to your face every day for a long, long time.

I bet all these dogs are very friendly and a bundle of joy to their owners, but a lot of these are not standard malamutes. The are way too big. They are either crossbred or not with papers. But that does not matter to the dog or the owner. I love these pictures. They all look happy.
Gawjus dogs, but I hope their kept in cold climates. It kills me when people keep these kinds of dogs in hot places..
I hate to be "THAT guy," but a lot of these are poorly bred. Malamutes SHOULD be medium sized dogs; these larger Malamutes are at heightened risk for hip and elbow dysplasia (as the article noted) heart problems and other defects. When you see a breeder deliberately breeding under or oversized "fad" dogs, you have to wonder how much care they put into health and temperament. Several of these dogs show the signs of mastiff crossing; floppy ears and excessively loose lips, also a sign of bad/careless breeding. These dogs won't even benefit from "hybrid vigor" most likely as they are inheriting size related defects. Don't buy oversized or undersized dogs unless you have really investigated the breeder and their reputation. Poorly bred dogs are heartbreaking.
I wish I could have one but I live in FLA, so it wouldn't be fair. So I need to move somewhere with cooler temps or we need a Florida Malamute
I miss my malamute. They are the best doggos ever. Unfortunately I don't have the time or space for a doggo at the moment. It wouldn't be fair to said doggo, especially a Malamute, they are extremely attached to their people and hate being alone.
My neighbor had a Giant Malamute named Babe. She'd always come to the fence that divided our properties for pets and scritches behind the ears. Then one day she didn't show up. Turned out the neighbor came home to find her laying in the yard. They still aren't sure what she died of, but they do know she wasn't poisoned. They originally got her as a theft deterrent, but I think with the right amount of bacon, she'd have slobbered them to death instead. She was a good puppers.
I love Malamutes but I would never adopt one because they shed so much and they clean up is insane!
Phil, Niko and Milo are from the Life with Malamutes YouTube channel - they're a family from the UK and they're awesome!
Wow! Such a gigantic fluffsters they are. I've seen the amount of fur they shed (1-2 times a year) - that's gigantic too.

My mum's boyfriend had a Malamute and she was the definition of a gentle giant. I'm certain that she was convinced that she was still puppy-sized all her life!

These doggos are gorgeous! But my gawd, how do they afford to feed them and since heartworm meds are based on weight, that must cost a bloody fortune as well. And then there's ALL that brushing . . . .
I love... Malamutes, I love most dogs... and they're so cute... and all I see when I see these photos is "Fur. So much... fur. So much.. grooming" and I instantly feel all the fur in my nose... and on my clothes... in my food... My own dog is only 35 lbs and has an undercoat.. and there's already SO MUCH FUR.
Doesn't really look like malamutes, is it showdogs? They wouldn't last long pulling a sledge in snow.
Absolutely, beautiful breed, I would not want the food bill !!!
A lot of these pics are photoshopped. Yes they are big dogs, but not as big as a lot of these pictures make out.
