No one is immune to experiencing misfortune. It’s bizarre how some minor unlucky accidents can ruin our whole day. Whether it’s the little things that go wrong the second you step out of bed or some inconsiderate remarks that send you into a downward spiral, sometimes we go from blissfully happy to plain miserable in mere seconds.
It’s easy to start feeling irritated and full of self-pity. When you find out that such random things can become an immediate day-breaker, you might start feeling grumpy and even bring the people that surround you down, too. It turns out, bad stuff tends to stick because we are more likely to dwell on the things that went wrong.
We keep letting pessimistic thoughts in because of the negativity bias—our tendency to give more significance to the negative experiences than positive or neutral ones. Rick Hanson, Ph.D., a psychologist and author of Hardwiring Happiness: The New Brain Science of Contentment, Calm, and Confidence, explained that humans evolved to be fearful.

“The nervous system has been evolving for 600 million years, from ancient jellyfish to modern humans. Our ancestors had to make a critical decision many times a day: approach a reward or avoid a hazard,” he wrote.
People needed to find food, have children, and cooperate with others to help them have children of their own. Also, they had to hide from predators in order to survive and avoid potential dangers.
While both of them are important, there’s a key difference. If you miss out on food one day, you’ll have a shot to find more the next. But if you fail to avoid a hazard—there are no more chances for you to pass your genes to the next generation. That’s why we generally react “more intensely to negative stimuli than to equally strong positive ones.”

“The alarm bell of your brain—the amygdala (you’ve got two of these little almond-shaped regions, one on either side of your head)—uses many of its neurons to look for bad news: it’s primed to go negative in most people,” Hanson continued.
“Once it sounds the alarm, negative events and experiences get quickly stored in memory—in contrast to positive events and experiences, which are not prioritized in the same way.”

While this is great for passing on our genes, it makes it hard to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. Understanding our tendency to focus on the negativities should help us to recognize that things are usually not as bad as we think. Of course, it’s important to share and discuss the problems we face in our everyday lives. But it’s also necessary to balance it out with the good stuff and remember to share a laugh or two.
I Passed Out In The Parking Lot Of The Emergency Room, And They Sent An Ambulance To Take Me 15 Feet
We have this thing called "health insurance" where you pay $12k a year in premiums, and have a 3-5k deductible. At the end of the year, you've paid like $15,000 and most likely received less than $1k worth of treatment, unless you are having a baby, end up really sick, have a chronic illness, or a major injury/accident. We dropped our health insurance last year and pay everything out of pocket- my husband has congenital sleep apnea and sees a specialist 4 times a year, and since we started paying in cash we've actually saved a lot of money
Load More Replies...It does *not* cost that much to provide the service. There is so much naked profiteering in the American health system, even if people do want that kind of health service.
Roxy, in the Italian health care system, which sucks, the hospital gets its money from the government. I've been sent to the hospital for tests I already had, days before they were able to do the tests. There was once a patient in my room who had been in the hospital for 3 months for tests. They didn't even know what she had yet. Three months just for tests. She probably didn't have anything at all but with her ass in the bed, they were making money for doing nothing.
Load More Replies...I would fight that to my dying breath. I know how fkced the US system is, but this is - even to their standards - absolute bs.
Oh yeah, you know how everyone says Americans will sue over everything, THIS is why, we are soused to companies trying to do B's like this that we assume everyone is trying to rip us off and the fact that it's usually true has showed the more entitled citizens that if they sue over anything there's probably a 75% chance they will win something, especially true depending on the area and judge more so th we n the lawyer.
Load More Replies...The American healthcare system is an absolute disgrace. No wonder so many people in the Unites States can't afford medical care. It's really heart-breaking and disgusting at the same time.
I went to Emergicare and they said I needed to go to the ER. My husband offered to drive me but they said it was a liability issue. I didn't have insurance and it took me 2 years to pay off that $800 bill.
Such a disgrace. Had an ambulance called for me last summer: 62 euro's. And they even had the siren on! That's service.
And they ran the siren? Wow! That usually costs us an additional $250!
Load More Replies...call billing and let them know you won't be paying the bill. It has been my experience that they will then delete the entry. I was charged $26 for drinking a coke (which I can't remember) after surgery. Called billing and told them that the charge was a "no go" and it was lifted from the bill.
Hooo, I'd have gone off. Coulda used a wheelchair. Blatant exploitation.
I was at an ER with horrific lower right abdominal pain. Unbeknownst to me I was passing a kidney stone. The triage nurse didn't believe my pain level and put me in the waiting room forever. I ended up calling 911 FROM THE ER!! to be taken to another ER. The US healthcare system sucks.
This happened to me too!! I went into the hospital after having a seizure and smashed my head open. They stapled my head and sent me on my way. Had a second seizure directly outside the hospital and they tried to bill me a second ambulance fee. I fought it and won. I’m Canadian so I’m sure that helped, plus we only pay $45 for an ambulance ride and nothing for everything else.
That's f****d up on so many levels. But yeah, they do that. I saw someone slip in a hospital and no one, not even a nurse could touch them till the paramedics came.
If my favorite (fictional) show is to be believed, they are legally obliged to send an ambulance if it is in the grounds of the hospital. I think it is so there is a proper intake process and it is not taking staff off the hospital floor while they are on duty.
This isn't right...like literally. They brought you there and you passed out while under their care so this is their doing. You should the bill with a manager from the billing dept or talk to the hospital administrator or whoever. Nope, I would even think for one second about that bill.
I went in for chemo, and they found blood clots in my lungs at the same moment, my aunt wanted me to take an ambulance to the hospital, that was just across the street, a guy that "liked" me there said hell no, grabbed a wheelchair and walked me across the street so I didn't have to pay for anything, Was faster too, I would have had to wait 20 mins for an ambulance, but I would have died within 10 mins
This happens more than you would think. My husband was a doctor and was going out to his car from the hospital where he was working, and saw someone collapse in the parking lot. The man had JUST been discharged but the ER refused to send out a gurney or let him bring the patient back in without calling an ambulance first. It ended up in the newspaper. This happened about 25 years ago and I see nothing has changed.
Completely opposite my experience. I fell on a sidewalk; a nurse ran over, security guys put me in their car and drove me to the ER.
It would've quicker if they'd just dragged you in on a tarp. This is beyond ridiculous.
Government stinks in every part of our economy, they control our pricing in everything even in our Hospitals
They could have just come out with a wheelchair. We moan about the nhs in England but god we’re lucky
Wow that is an expensive short trip. I'm Canadian, we do have to pay for the ambulance unless we have coverage. My bill for an ambulance ride in 2015 was 548.00 approx. I usually walk the trip in about 20 minutes. But when my husband slipped on the ice one day a lady called 911 an ambulance arrived, my husband told them he was okay didn't need their services, he was just going to the Casino for a free coffee before going to volunteer at the bingo hall across the street(no free coffee there) they loaded him into the ambulance, drove to the casino, went in found the free coffee, got him a cup with a lid on it, then took him and his coffee across the street to the bingo hall. The gal in charge at the bingo took one look at him, said you are going to the hospital, stopped and picked me up and away we went. When he got through triage and went to be registered as a patient the ambulance attendant had just come in to report a refusal of service. My husband was still carrying his free coffee.
That's what you get for living in a third world country! Oh…it's the USA?
Yep. The put my son in a helicopter to go to minutes from the hospital he was at. He was know as the 10,000 dollar baby.
Fun fact : you can't be charged for an expense you didn't explicitly agreed to. You're welcome.
I was in the emergency room at the American hospital where I was employed. I was being admitted for high blood pressure onto the cardiac floor that was at a different location, literally 4 city blocks away. I asked to just allow my husband to drive me there because I knew my health insurance doesn't cover ambulance fees. They laughed at me and I was told if I didn't allow the ambulance to transport me it would be considered AMA and I'd lose the bed. 5 days later I am home and receive an ambulance bill close to $400....4 blocks! and the bill included gas mileage...f*****s!
Here we go about the Americans and our evil expensive healthcare . Nope , this is Americans and our completely stupid liability laws because people like to sue for everything .
I've already told it before, but anyway. I live in a "socialist" country with "high taxes" and I had to call an ambulance for myself (false alarm). The paramedics first stayed with me for like 45 mins doing their stuff before they decided to drive me to the hospital. Two weeks later, I get a bill of 25€. A taxi to the hospital would've been more expensive.
My family and I were in Belize for Christmas, and I suffered a grand mal seizure the local airport ( a first for me - not recommended, would not buy again). Ambulance came, gave me a quick exam, allowed me to puke in a tray (I fell on my head and got a severe concussion), got me into the ambulance, drove me to the hospital, took me inside - total professionals. Cost? $30 Belizian, which is $15 US. Had this happened In the US, it would have been $1000, easily. And I live about 2 miles from the nearest hospital.
Yep. Have dealt with that in the ER. Had a herniated disc at C4, and the pain was off the scale, and not able to get it under control.. they did X-rays, but told me they couldn't do an MRI in the ER, wouldn't call an orthopedic doc. Sent me home, no pain meds. 24 hr later had an MRI, AFTER I lost the use of my left arm completely. They still didn't think my lain was as bad as it was.. another 24 hrs later they called and told me to go to the ER now, and they would admit me from there. Ended up having surgery on my cervical spine, and needing PT to regain the use of my left arm. After 6 months , still not recovered it all, and insurance cuts me off! Had to do the rest from home on my own! Therapist gave me written exercises to keep advancing to, and to see the doctor if any problems. This all stemmed from the fact I saw pain management for neck pain and spasms, and they thought I was just trying to get meds... great big cluster ##ck. Never had that problem before or after that!
That's an abuse of insurance! I would've argued that, and if you had, you positively would have won! That is just ridiculous!
I had a dental appt at Kaiser Permanente. My blood pressure was high so they put me in a wheelchair, pushed me about 50 feet to a nurses station and charged me $80.
Normally, they send a bill with as much crap on it as possible to try to milk as much money from you that they can. Best thing to do is refuse to pay for anything that isn't covered by your health insurance and call them out for charging you for unnecessary services. They do this all the time and they back down when called out on it because they know they would lose if it ever made it to a court. At least the US Healthcare system doesn't force people to watch their children die when other hospitals may be able to treat them, and offer to due so for free.
Had they shown the bill before you passed out. You would have almost somersaulted your way to the ER.
Essentially a motorized gurney. I can't imagine -- even with my aged, broken body -- seeing someone in need and calling an ambulance rather than racing into the ER and grabbing a gurney myself. They do it with wheelchairs.
....brought to you by both democrats and republicans........woo hoo !......
DAMMIT! just 7 cents away! Its only 7 more cents and I would be satisfied!
Do is not Trump who remove insurance for everyone? Make America Great Again they said!
As much as I hate the man, we never actually had universal health care in the first place. What we had was a law requiring everyone to carry reeaaallly expensive health insurance that doesn't even cover much, or pay a fine. I hate trump with a passion, but that law was really harmful to middle class people so I wasn't sad to see it go. Our health insurance costed 12k a year for a family of 3, had a 6k deductible that needed to be paid out of pocket before the "insurance" would even apply, and after we met the deductible (which only happened one year), our insurance only covered my husband's annual check up- which out of pocket is only a couple hundred dollars. So we paid $18,000 to cover a $300 visit. We dumped our insurance last year and we just pay everything in cash now.
Load More Replies...Of couse... health providers allways thinking how to bill the most possible while taking care of people. Why does this not surprise me?
so you had to sell your child to pay...well suck it up...welcome to america home of the free MAGA and all that BS :)

Psychological resilience could be the key to dealing with negativity. “Although there has been a debate whether resilience, mental and emotional, is innate or something that can be developed, for me, it’s an innate condition that all humans have but needs to be developed and modeled well for it to come to the surface,” Vasia Toxavidi, a counselor and accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), told Bored Panda in a previous interview.
“All humans are wired for survival, so resilience must be an innate trait for everyone for this to happen, but if it’s never developed, then it may not come out as a trait for someone.”

She added: “Resilience is the skill of adaptation, which for me is another innate skill of humans compared to other animals. Humans can adapt to situations easier. Having counseling or psychotherapy is an example of how resilience can be developed and learned and become a new way of living.”
Humor can be a helpful resilience strategy. Studies have shown that it can “decrease levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and increase the activation of the pleasure hormone, dopamine.” Plus, “just smiling without even finding anything funny can make the brain believe that you are happy.” So it seems that laughing can help us reconsider problems that we would otherwise interpret as “overwhelming and damaging.”

“Another important key to resilience is to be part of a community and have external support from family, friends and others. As humans, we’re social animals so without having a strong sense of belonging, we cannot thrive or be resilient,” Vasia Toxavidi concluded.
