Annette. People, especially children, actually carry more germs than dogs. That's a fact. And having worked in both restaurants and public transportation, I also know for a fact, that kids are more disturbing to their surroundings and require more cleaning up afterwards than any pet. But that's not the point. The point is that you should respect, that not all people appreciate your kids as much as you do. Of course kids have rights, but not more than grownups. None are allowed to bother others, but kids (and dogs btw) don't know this until they are taught, - which is the lucky guardian/parents responsibility. I prefer being around animals over children, but I would never be unkind or rude to a child. I would though address a parent, if they allow their child to be a nuisance to others or litter etc. As I would a dog owner, if they let their dog do the same. We all need to respect each other. No, pets are not children, but to some people they are more appreciated. Just respect that.

You will understand one day if you have the privilege of having a pet. That sounds real stupid right? Because you love your child and would never trade him/her for a pet. Well some people feel the same, just with child and pet switched.

Humans are no more important than any other species. Every animal can feel pain just like we do. Your kids are more important to you because they’re yours, and that’s okay; that’s the way it’s supposed to be or else we’d have died out by now. The rest of us couldn’t give a s**t about your kids. If it’s a choice between some random kid and my dog, I’m going for my dog, who I love. That kid isn’t my responsibility, my dog is.

These "you can only save one" scenarios are ridiculous. It's never that hard lined. A truly caring person would carry the baby and drag that crate for all they're worth at the same time. Both are living things worthy of equal effort. To not do everything possible to save both would haunt me for the rest of my life. To those of you who could easily choose ... well, I'm not certain you should have pets or children.

And also how about you look in that same mirror and realize that judging people for not having the same views as you is equally as heinous as apparently you feel someone choosing a pet over a person. My pets ARE my children so to me (and apparently numerous other people on here) they are just as important as anyone else's child. Before talking about how horrible we are think about that and maybe look at things from a different perspective than your own.

Ben I agree with you 100%. Don't worry about these people downvoting you. They have absolutely no idea about the realities of life. Some of them won't realize the preciousness of children until it's too late.

The answers to this question, more than any other idiotic comments on this site, have saddened me beyond words for the state of our world. My only hope is that you are the tiny, tiny minority. How a person can value an animal over a baby...it's mind boggling. Many of you need to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself why you're so filled with hate and coldness.

Tarebear, I'm sorry, but your perspective is wrong. Animals are simply not as important as people. Wanna test that theory out? I can take my dog outside and shoot it. Not kind maybe, but I'm not going to prison. Can I drag my child outside and shoot him with no repercussions? I don't think so. Society's laws have deemed humans more important than a pet. Now, you are free to think and act however you'd like. No one's debating that. I am glad you love your dog and I hope you treat him or her well. I also pray to God you're never in a burning building and have to make the choice I outlined above.

Well...Nora, that's sick. Truly disgusting that you'd let a human baby die before your dog. Let's hope you're never in that position.

That's unfair because we aren't the best animals, especially not as children.

Oh good so basically according to you until one has a human child they are what less than and don't have an understanding of human importance? That's the biggest load of c**p I've ever heard. Also children have been put on a pedestal to the point where we basically worship them and feel like it's ok to call people without them less than. How about this animals are usually better behaved,cleaner, and more appreciative than children and frankly I would rather be in any area with a dog, cat, hedgehog, horse, etc than your spoiled rotten grimes little brat.

Of course human poop can make you sick! I would think much more easily than cat poop, because the poop would have to come from a cat that is infected with the bacteria in order to transmit the disease in the first place.
