Cat's like small spaces, whether an illusion like a shadow or reflection, 2D like a hoop or envelope in this case or 3D like a box or paper bag, as it will make them feel safe to be 'inside' it. If you make a circle on the floor in string, chances are you cat will sit in it. They feel secure. ^^
That's exactly why. Paper is a good insulator, and it keeps the exposed pads toasty. Although I suspect they also like the crinkly sound.

My cat kept on following this important piece of paper that I had lying next to me. I kept putting it away cz I was using it. It went on for hours!!!
