“AITA? I Went On Vacation With My Friend And Her Family, They Kicked Me Out So I Got My Own Room And Stayed On”

Whenever you think of vacation time, you think of resting in your own special way. So, that’s either lying on the beach, getting the occasional sunburn, or going hiking. Or actually going anywhere other than the location you’re staying at because resorts are boring. Maybe.

But, apparently, a vacation doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to relax. Take this one family, for instance. The extended group of 8 invited a daughter’s friend, seemingly all-expenses-paid, to vacation with them. What they failed to mention was their expectation that the daughter and her friend would cook for the entire group for the entirety of the vacation. Entirely.

Oh, it gets better. Or worse. Depending on how you look at it.

More Info: Reddit

Whenever you think vacation, you probably think relaxation, right? Well, no, as this one family needs someone to be cooking all the time

Redditor u/imonvacaaation, who introduced herself as a female student, has a roommate, Meg, whose entire family—i.e. the friend, her mother, her father, two of her father’s friends, and her three brothers—invited her to vacation with them.

The family offered to buy her ticket and book a resort for all of them to stay at. Sounds sweet, right? The young woman, in turn, started saving up for some activities while on vacation, and a little bit extra to treat the family to some dinner for being so generous.

But, there had to be a catch, right? There was. A pretty sneaky one, surprisingly.

A woman who was invited to go on vacation with a “traditional” family got the short end of the deal and was “asked” to cook meals for 9 people

First off, everyone flew first class. Except for the friend. The friend got economy. But why complain, it’s free, right?

It didn’t stop there. The first night they were there, they all went grocery shopping. Turns out, they wanted to cook all of the meals in-house. And, actually, correction. They wanted their daughter Meg and the OP to cool all of the meals in-house. Yep, all 3 square meals throughout the day, for 9 people. Every day.

You see, Meg’s family is one of those “traditional” ones that believe that a woman’s place is in the kitchen and, unfortunately, Meg and the OP fit that description. The OP admitted to not being a very good cook and only knew a handful of recipes, so she tried her best.

At first, it seemed like they would all have a really good time, but the economy ticket and grocery shopping soon proved otherwise

However, it did not go well. The dad of the family in turn got livid, and tensions started to skyrocket. But OP was not about to let anyone trample on her, so she told him off. This initiated his entitlement protocol and he blurted out that it was his vacation. Well, it’s OP’s vacation too, or did they invite her to be an unpaid cook?

Some back-and-forth later, the dad snaps and effectively tells OP to pack her stuff and go. No idea how, but she did. First things first though, she figured out that her return ticket was not protected in any way, so she sorted out a password so the family wouldn’t cancel it without her noticing.

But, after just one attempt, some family members snapped at the OP and asked her to leave… but they didn’t specify how or when

What ended up happening is the OP secured her return ticket that the family bought and booked another room, which upset the family a lot

Image credits: Andrew Thomas (not the actual image)

Then she went to the resort’s front desk and sorted out a surprisingly affordable room, explaining her predicament. They hooked her up, and she still had some money left to do touristy stuff. On her own terms. The only sad part of it all is that this left her roommate stranded with all of the kitchen stuff.

One day, the OP was sightseeing and Meg’s family happened to stumble upon her. They seemed quite surprised that the OP was still around. In fact, they were furious after understanding that the OP would be using their return ticket, having “deceived” them into thinking she couldn’t afford a vacation. Which, when you think about it, is quite evil as they were effectively attempting to leave her stranded here.

And folks were all in support of OP—she wasn’t wrong to do what she did, and got some pretty satisfying revenge (with a dash of malicious compliance) along the way.

But the internet thinks the OP was right here—not only was she in the clear, but she also got some satisfying revenge along the way

Folks online explained that the family was basically holding OP hostage. This is besides the fact that they were treating their daughter’s friend like dirt. And, this was also besides the fact that the roomie did not warn her about this, and folks have a lot of reason to believe she always knew what her family’s intentions were.

But, all in all, folks agreed that she was invited to vacation with them. Hence, she was in no way obligated to feel bad about doing just that. And hence people’s praises for the OP, saying she did the right thing and executed it flawlessly.

Her post got nearly 27,000 upvotes and a bit over 20 Reddit awards for her efforts. You can check out the post, all of OP’s responses in the comments, as well as those of the commenters here. And you can check out our other Am I The A-Hole articles here.

But, eh-eh-eh, not so fast, as we’d like to ask you to pay the commenter’s tax, which is to leave your personal convictions in the form of text regarding the current personal narration from the world wide web in the comment section located in the lower cardinal direction of this virtual page.

Why didn't the 'friend' warn her in advance or have their sexist ways just been drummed into the 'friends' head so much that she just took it for granted that every family acts this way?

That is why OP was third choice. The first female friend who was vetoed probably knew the score, told them to suck it. Friend didn’t tell OP because she was afraid OP wouldn’t attend and and she (friend) would be stuck doing everything on her own.

NTA, they failed to clarify duties required and left you in a foreign country not knowing you had any money. Creepy and hateful must be the new traditional family values.

What a bunch of pigs. They only invited her because they thought she's poor and would gladly 'earn her keep'? And how DARE she abuse their generosity by refusing to play servant? OP will do very well in life. She planned ahead by saving money for the trip, she stood her ground and refused to be subjugated, and she had the wherewithal to secure her return transportation and lodging despite being knocked for a loop. Then she kicked back and enjoyed her revenge by spending a few quiet days all to herself. Well done!!!

The cherry on top would be if the airline gave her a free upgrade to first class so she could smirk her way home as the family watched as they get a call from the FBI and their lawyer.

The OP handled the situation well and was lucky she had enough money saved. She needs to speak to a lawyer when she gets home. What that family did may be illegal.

It is... In any state due to federal law. This 100% meets a federal human trafficking offence. They took her cross country with false pretenses of free labor with no explanation of expectations, then stranded her thinking she would literally be stranded when she wouldn't "comply" with their demands! The parents for sure and likely the daughter at least would be on the hook for this.

I wonder if she could file charges against the family for trying to leave her stranded in a foreign country. Or sue them for the money she lost after they kicked her out. If she can, she definitely should. Someone tried to do that to me I'd be making sure their life was a living hell for as long as I could.

How is this not a criminal investigation? Luring a young woman to a foreign country, expecting her to be an unpaid and unwilling servant, and then kicking her out? Not making sure she gets home? That's more than creepy. That's some sort of murder game. What traditions are these, anyway?

What the poster should do next time she sees her friend's family, ask that if cooking is "Women's Work" and beneath Men...why are a majority of the world's best / most famous chefs MEN!? She also needs to speak with someone in the legal know. What happened was hinky enough that it could be classed as a Crime, and there was definitely some False Pretenses involved from the family. If she has not already cut ties with her friend, she should be prepared for the friend to do so if she does have a leg to stand on for Legal Action.

I really hope they did as it does fit under several federal trafficking laws if it's USA origin of travel. Pretty severe possible consequences for the planner who kicked her out. Federal time... Significant time...

Was once invited on a vacation and later learned I pissed off my hosts because I didn't want to babysit their grade school child/grandchild that was brought along with them. They used paying my way as a guilt trip and how I should have been more accommodating for THEIR vacation. Total BS and makes me wary when anyone suggests a vacation where I'm not in control of the finances.

Definitely NTA! But I would check out the laws where you reside because it might actually be a criminal act and if not, I could see you might have a civil case against them because this is NOT okay! What if you hadn't had the extra money with you? I really think this might be a criminal or civil infringement and if I were you I would take it to the max. You might not get expenses but you could get punitive damages. That's frightening and so very wrong in every way!

And may I just add: Grown men who can't or won't cook are pathetic. Wow - what horrible people and what’s terrible situation to be put in unexpectedly. I’m an okay home cook and I wouldn’t know how to cook for that many people nor would I want the responsibility if it all goes to hell, which it sometimes does. Thank goodness she had the wherewithal and gumption to solve her dilemma. Personally I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near those people and would have gone home but that’s just me. The friend should be apologizing for their behaviour. Someone else in the comments above said this was akin to human trafficking and I don’t disagree. I wonder what would happen if someone held a mirror up to these people so they could see how disgusting their actions actually were. Would they be shocked? I doubt it though.

Airline tickets tend to be non transferable once the outbound sector is used... she did good to contact the airline and get divided out of the booking. Why bring in politics? Seriously? I've been both Republican and Democrat in my life so far. When it comes to the top it's all an illusion and both Reps and Dems are in bed together behind the scenes. Which is why I'm now a Libertarian! Not to be confused with Liberal. I believe the Gov has no business in our personal lives period. But until people see that it's all a big game and you really don't have the freedoms you think you do, you'll be a slave to it forever. And by the way... What these people did to that poor girl is disgusting and they should be investigated for a federal offence of human trafficking. Because that's what they attempted to do, and it's purely sick and evil! So we completely agree there.

NTA. What they did was just plain cruel. You should also talk to a lawyer and see if you have any grounds for legal action. I'm not usually a fan of lawsuits but in this case they put you in danger. What if you weren't able to get back home? Most lawyers will give you the 1st consultation for free and may even take the case on a contingency basis. Also, probably a good idea to cut off that entire family as friends and associates. They're plain ol' bad people.

NTA! You handled and protected yourself so well. That I'm actually proud of you and I don't even know you. Your "friend" is not a friend. She didn't tell you before you accepted the offer. That you and her are just the help because the mom who is supposed to cook for all those males. Had a medical thing exempting her to cook. Also if they're so rich. Why are they cooking meals in a vacation. The least I wanna do in a vacay is to cook. My partner and I are not wealthy and if we go away to a resort. We never cook cause we plan each thing. They're the AHs! Especially the father. They are all of them so entitled. These are the things that don't make me wanna have "rich" friends and I would turn down every single trip I'm invited with their family. I can imagine their faces when they saw you in the beach chillax just enjoying yourself. Lolol 🤣 More than likely her parents said bring a friend who can't pay for her own vacation. We pay and we ask the favor in return by cooking our meals.

OP needs to find a way to publicize what happened with their names. If they're rich that means they're prominent and don't want others in their community to know. Say an article to warn others about taking free vacations with friends without getting all the facts and what the families expect. The story could be about what could be like trafficking to trick an innocent person into being a cook in a foreign country. Then how they treated her finally kicking her out when she didn't agree. Bet you see them squirming and trying to justify their behavior. Besides as long as it is all true you can't be sued for defamation.

OP should absolutely get legal counsel and sue the family for luring/trafficking. I would suggest secretly recording a conversation with her "friend/roommate" about what happened first, then asking her if she can record it again after, if she says yes, record it again, two recordings always better than one in these situations. Now to my feelings about this trip, it was a scam, if OP was my daughter, I'd have helped spice up the rest of her vacation, send her some money to get her though the week, and I'd be furious with that family and their family friends for endangering my daughter. It's pretty sad, but so many people are just awful!

Oh dear lord, I can imagine what my own dad would do to this guy (because he certainly isn't a man) if someone ever treated me this way and put me in danger. Mom would help him hide the body. In multiple locations. I'm also super suspicious why this guy brought two adult male friends on a family vacation and wanted his daughter to bring a young college girl.

This story really doesn't sound true, especially if these people were as "rich" as she claimed. Any family that is rich and travels in first class probably would never be satisfied with the ameture cooking this girl could provide. What rich people travel like she describes and doesn't eat fabulous meals cooked in fun restaurants that dominate vacation venues. Not to mention the current services such as Door Dash offer delivering any quality of food people could desire. I'm not sure she's not making this story up.

I dunno - they brought her to be an unpaid servant to a foreign land without her full consent and then set her adrift. The cost of the trip wouldn’t equate what she would be paid to do that work if that was the actual agreement. She could pursue charges with authorities when she returns. What would have happened if she didn’t have extra funds or the wherewithal to solve her dilemma? What if she wandered off the resort and was abducted?

Uhh No! It should have been discussed & agreed upon prior to her even agreeing to go! But no they didn't say a word! What they did do is commit a federal crime of human trafficking by taking someone to a foreign country under false pretenses and attempted to leave them stranded in said foreign country and should be investigated and punished to the fullest letter of the law! She had brought money to feed herself and treat the family to a meal out of respect for her economy plane ride and hotel. Which she ended up paying for anyway, so no, no one's a little b****. But possibly you and your misogynistic view! What they did was deceitful, disgusting, sick, and 100% wrong as hell. No, nothing in life is free! You are correct there, that's why they chose a young female friend of the daughter to take advantage of them not knowing the world yet! That's also why she was 3rd choice! They wouldn't ask the male friend to be their servant, and the 2nd girl probably wouldn't put up with it either!

What if you hadn't had the extra money with you? I really think this might be a criminal or civil infringement and if I were you I would take it to the max.

I'm glad that you had the good sense to save money. Good for you! I hope you had the time of your life. And I know it had to be made just a little bit better knowing that you s**t on their plan.

That's grounds for a fight. That mother Fer would be bleeding before I left. And I would get home before them and bring their house down.

File this experience under "NEVER doin that again!" Meg's parents were atrocious to OP. If she were m' child, Meg's dad would be in mortal fear of me bout now- he's obviously got more money than class & he deserves his a** kicked in. Kudos go to OP for securin her return tix, not loosing her composure, & enjoyin the place despite these cunty people. She's a smart girl.

They basically wanted to force poor person to be their slave under the threat of leaving them in a foreign country with no way back. Calling them a******s would be too kind.

What I want to know is if they were so rich, why didn't they just hire a personal chef for the trip or order out? I can't imagine going to a different country just to make the same dinners I have at home.

NTA What the actual F***!? How is OP supposed to get home, she's lucky she could get an affordable room until she flew home. I can't believe her friend's family even chewed her out when they saw OP on beach... 😔

I'd have to kill everyone of them including the friend for not having my back. This was so awful it's hard to believe it's all true.

I feel like some information is missing. Like maybe helping out was indeed mentioned, etc? This seems very far fetched.

You're also the type to not believe in human trafficking and sx trafficking. Even when it's in the evening news and in front of your face... Another head in the sand!

Complete with the classic AITA commenters taking things to extremes and saying she was trafficked lmao. That sub is such a dumpster fire. That's a pretty shitty family though.

They are all assholes...OP included. She wanted a free trip they wanted a live-in chef. The frustration came when they couldn't use each other.

This just goes to prove that nothing is free something always comes with a cost. And if they're paying thousands of dollars for you to go along with them for your charger you don't have to pay your own pocket you might as well cook and not be a little b**** about it

It's an entertaining story. I enjoyed it. I don't think she was trying to prove anything, she was just sharing the details. Where else would you post something like this?
