Extreme weather events are becoming more and more common, with records shattered down under during Australia's recent heatwave, and now, at the opposite end of the spectrum, the 'polar vortex' turning Midwestern U.S. into a winter wonderland.

The polar vortex is a band of strong winds, high up in the atmosphere that keeps bitterly cold winter season air locked around the Arctic region. Sometimes, like this year, it can drift further south than usual and envelop highly populated areas of North America. Chigaco has been particularly hard hit, with its notoriously windy location on Lake Michigan bringing freezing temperatures down to record-breaking lows.

With much of the Midwest on lockdown and people urged to stay indoors, some people have been braving the winter landscapes to take incredible images of the effects that the extremely cold weather is having on their daily lives. From exploding toilets to icy hairstyles, this list compiled by Bored Panda will give you chills just from looking at it!

A lot of areas that had these issues consumers utility for gas sent out a thing that temps had to be turned down by everybody to a certain amount (in my area of Michigan it was 65, I saw some states it was 55/60 F.) in order to conserve gas until more arrived otherwise it would be gone and nobody would have heat. Doubtful If they sued they would win since landlord was doing what was asked by the state.

There were natural gas shortages and outages in areas of Minnesota and so the gas company requested we all turn our thermostats down to 60-63 degrees. Not illegal. There were many with no gas (heat) or power. So we were all doing our share to help. Not a huge deal but the temperature wasn't 40 below anywhere in Minnesota.

Bonnie Blue Bird

Agreed. 60-63 is not unreasonable. Plus, a tenant that believes leaving the burners on in this manner does not strike me as the ideal tenant. This is a fire hazard.

My first home - when I got married - a little stone cottage (UK) 1984 - it had one gas fire for the whole 3 floors. Rigged up a system of curtains and blankets the first winter - to - keep the heat downstairs, to pin it back to let the heat up to the bedroom, or pin back the next curtain to let the heat up to the bathroom - central heating - lol. the water pipes ran through the outside wall so during cold snaps I would have to get up at 3am to run all the taps so they didnt freeze

Yes, I live in Minnesota. It was -65 wind chill. The power companies asked everyone to conserve their power and lower their temperatures a bit. I don't believe this tenant was tortured. They just needed to add an extra sweater.

My husband has colon cancer, permanant colostomy, weighs less than I do and I'm pretty petite, so when I wanted to turn down the thermostat he had to stay under an electric blanket and wouldn't eat or drink because even 65 degrees was too cold for him. I decided the heck with conserving, his health is more important. He's in the hospital now, having issues with blood loss and a mass growing in his kidney. Point is, not every body is able to "conserve energy" or put on more clothes to stay warm, it needs to be considered on a case by case basis.

Hey, I am in Australia and I saw the US news bulletin where people were asked to turn down their heat so that power generators could keep up with demand. We've had the opposite here, record heat and record use of aircon.. People were asked to moderate their thermostats up a degree or two to decrease demand on power. This is all the result of greedy c*nts blocking action on climate change for 2-3 decades. Its not going to get better if status quo continues.

When I lived in Texas, where temps would hit triple digits for weeks on end during the summer, the low income apartment managers would turn off the air conditioning. They would claim it was broken down. They were keeping costs down, and had no concern for their residents. People did die from the heat, often the elderly. I do agree with the comments here, that the landlord was complying with the law. The OP said the heat was turned down, not off.

It's normal for building temperature to fall during extremely cold weather. The lower the outside temperature, the more heat escapes through the walls, and the boiler/furnace is sized for the coldest night of a *normal* year, not an extreme year. No matter how high you set the thermostat, the furnace can't output more than 100% of its capacity.

Several cities have asked people, including landlords, to turn the head down (not off, just down) so that they won't run out of natural gas or overload the electrical systems. Sometimes we have to sacrifice comfort for the good of others.

Landlord may not have actually turned it down. Read an article a couple of days ago from a heating company explaining that heating systems aren't designed to cope with the extreme cold that has been happening in certain parts of the country; the systems just can't keep up.

Tina Donaldson

Utility companies have been asking customers to be conservative because there was a fire at a natural gas compressor station north of Detroit. It's either conserve, or nearly 1.8 million people go without heat entirely. Issues are FAR more likely when the stations are working at capacity (and over capacity).

Personally, if my landlord tried something like that, I’d set the oven to pre-heat for roasting the biggest prime rib I could find. Add roast vegetables and potatoes, Baked Alaska. Then I’d call the landlord & invite him/her to dinner. And at the end, present him/her with a bill for the meal — to cover the cost of your lack of heat in the apartment!

Alfred Futch Jr.

In Key West not many apartments had heat, many years ago it got cold and I did this but the fan was too close and caught fire while I was in the shower, hence the need for heat, I ran in and threw the burning fan out the window and set the building on fire. Luckily the fire department got there quickly but I had to move out, the landlord was pissed.
