Some may say that enjoying good food is one of the best things about life, and after all, we do eat or snack all the time. But as with most things, not everybody likes the same food, since we all have different tastes. Some people are pickier than others when it comes to food. While some might eat pretty much most meals or delicacies, others will only go for things they’ve tried and tested many times and are comfortable with.
Today’s article, however, is about people who aren’t even that picky at all. After all, most people will at least try a couple of foods throughout their life that they wouldn’t usually eat. But even these non-picky eaters will steer clear of certain foods that even the thought of makes their stomachs turn. Someone on Reddit asked a question exactly about the latter—“Non-picky eaters, what’s one food you absolutely can’t get behind?” and the internet delivered. The question collected 24k upvotes and prompted 18.5k comments. Lutefisk. It is a terrible idea someone had here in Norway some centuries ago. You take a perfectly edible cod and dry it. So far, so good; You can still rescue the fish by making Bacalao.
Then, you follow up by soaking the fish, the very fish you just dried, in water for a few days. Finally, when the fish no longer thinks its remains can be further mistreated you put it into a bath of lye dissolved in water. The end process sees you with a swollen mess of a fish that's got a ph of 11-12, which is lethal. To make the damn thing edible you need to soak it in water for over a week.
This is, incredibly enough, considered a delicacy and is something many try to foist upon poor, unsuspecting, tourists. Me? I think the fish has been through enough, no need to make it a participant in crimes against humanity as well.
Exotic foods are definitely not for everyone, after all, not everybody is into the idea of having a taste of silk worms, tarantulas or snails. And that is completely okay. Most of us will typically eat what we're used to, and getting out of that "comfort zone", especially when it is unnecessary, can be quite difficult. And even though trying out new things is generally a great idea to expand your horizons, as long as you're eating healthily, there's definitely no need to go for the extreme if you don't want to. So the next time your friends or family decide to host for you a local version of "Fear Factor", it's okay to say no.
Boiled silk worms. Tried them in Cambodia and from the name you'd expect them to be not great, but I was unprepared for how incredibly awful it was.
Tarantulas. As an arachnophobe, I cannot eat that. Also there is some kind of Filipino food that is literally just an underdeveloped duck fetus/embryo thing straight out the egg, which is another I will never eat.
Even if you are a picky eater, however, do not be too hard on yourself. Although, as mentioned before, trying out some new meals can be a great experience, you don't have to do it every time, as would just be too stressful. Furthermore, being a picky eater isn't exactly your own choice all the time. According to Smithsonian Magazine, picky eating is a product of both nature (genetics being one factor) and nurture (your parents, for example, preparing specific meals as you grow up), although the science behind all that is incredibly complex, to the point where there is little consensus on one explanation. So don't stress yourself out for not liking olives, grapefruit, or even bananas.
Pickled pigs feet. There's only a tiny bit of actual meat in there. No way.
Eyes, brains, and genitals. Sure it's arbitrary but that's my line, I'm down to at least try eating anything else.
Down here in Mexico all I eat is frickin cow balls and brains.
All in all, food is food. But that doesn't mean we all have to like eating the same thing. We all have different tastes and we don't have to break out of our comfort zone all the time either. Let's just all agree that pizza is awesome.
Durian
A dear friend loves it and says it tastes like custard. The year I lived in Bangkok, I lived very close to a pier where I could take a small ferry that would connect me to the Skyway and from there, I could get around easily. But to get to the pier I had to walk through the morning market, which meant walking past many durian sellers. My rule for food is: if it doesn’t get past my nose, it doesn’t go in my mouth! I won’t ever give durian a go.
Stinky tofu. It actually doesn’t taste that bad but dear lord, the smell is horrendous
Flaming hot Cheetos. I simply don't like them it's not even that they're too hot for me, I like spicy food but I think they taste like plastic.
Snails or oysters Rockefeller
Take Rockefeller away and leave the snails and oysters to the millions who enjoy them.
I just don't like organs. The texture of most organ meat is terrible.
Natto. It’s the soapy, sticky texture. Or anything with harissa. I just … can’t.
Sweet pickles. Absolutely disgusting and blasphemous!
This thread is full up of some fear factor stuff. I just don't like anchovies. They're too salty.
Never had Caesar salad? Dressing is made with anchovies.

You're supposed to rinse them first! And then eat them with tomatoes, avocados, pizza, or whaterver. Umami pieces of heaven. If you ever go to Cantabria, in Spain... And yes, the best brands are usually less salted.
sadly, people think that all anchovies are too salty but it is not true. yes, most are packed with salt but the better quality of anchovy the less salt/better tasting. i have found that 'cheap' anchovies tend to be too soft/mushy as well.
eat them fresh and grilled , canned are ok if you buy the real quality ones..not the america crap

You don't eat them by the forkful. You use a little bit for flavor. Pizza with anchovies is a good example. With the American habit of overloading pizza with toppings, I bet people think the pizza is full of anchovies, while instead is about half an anchovie per slice. Same with mushroom pizza. The first time I ordered it I got a plate of mushrooms with a tiny bit of soggy dough underneath. Nope, it's a mushroom slice per slice on average. Also you sautee the mushroom first so they don't "sweat" moisture over the pizza in the oven.
Well, if you've ever had Caesar salad dressing, hate to break it to you, but you've had anchovies.

Dear anchovy haters, you may not like anchovies on pizza or crackers, but I can safely bet that you've eaten it many times as an ingredient!
Marinaded anchovies (with garlic, lemon & herbs), also known as boquerones on some tapas menus, are delicious! Not salty like the ones in jars that you use for salsa verde or to put on pizza -although I like those too in small quantities.
There’re other ways to eat them than canned. Also if it’s too salty canned it’s because the process is not that great.

One of these days I would love to try anchovies on pizza. Ninja turtles liked it...
Or well fried in oil[shredded] and used as a starter for excellent pasta sauces.

I never liked eating them. Mostly because "the bones itched" and made my throat swell. I was an adult when I learned that I'm allergic to fish. =/
I was in a lunch meeting with several people the last time I tried them, and got a dish with anchovies on top. I tried one bite, then pushed them off the plate. Someone noticed and said, "you don't like anchovies?" and I said nope, but I try them every now and then just in case my tastes change. He said "can I have them?" and then someone else said 'you can have mine too!" and he happily scarfed all of them.
I am so prepared to get bludgeoned for this, but, my friend's definition of anchovies was a " tiny little fish about the size of a finger that smells like a finger too."
If you have ever heard of Bagna cauda, it is a great dip for crudities and outstanding on angel hair pasta. Basically, hot sauce made of olive oil, butter, garlic, anchovies mashed beyond recognition, and a touch of truffle oil. You'll be very surprised.
I will not go out of my way to get them but if they're on an antipasto plate I will eat them
We had a cat who used to bring in what I now know are Brewer’s Blackbirds, that she caught in the open field next to the house, and we’d find feathers and feet in the living room or just outside the living room door. Occasionally a beak, but feathers and feet regularly.

Olives. I retry them every so often to make sure. I nearly vomit every time.
I've eaten various bugs, organs, fermented things, and beyond....but olives man, can't do it.
I'm basically a garbage disposal, but just the smell of bananas makes me gag. I will not eat anything with banana in it. And before you ask, yes, that even includes banana bread.
Try taking my bananas fried in butter and with a caramel sauce and a big dollop of Ice-cream or whipped cream away from me...and I won´t be responsable for my actions !

I suspect this is an unpopular opinion but... I hate raw onions. Loathe them! And people put them in everything!
Heads of sheeps and goats. The taste and texture of the meat itself is nice but what kills me is the teeth when you have that thing in front of you
Yeah I always struggled a bit with that. The meat is really good but the teeth are upsetting. But if you stew it without the bones its delicious. In spain cow and pig cheeks are a delicacy, they are really tender. Reading this thread i realise that traditional spanish recipes are a bit wild.

I don't have the gene for "coriander leaf tastes like soap", so I quite enjoy it, but I concede the silliness of the coriander-laef-on-everything trend. Given how few people *do* like it.

I've eaten most of the things on this list in my life, and by and large, they aren't bad. The only things I really can't stand here are durian and organ meats. Oh, and I wasn't a big fan of balut, either.
Most of it is just personal preference. Sure, fermented shark is not food for everyone, but calling pears "Inedible"? Hell, I hate cauliflower, but I know it's edible.
I like how some of this list is like genuinely disgusting awful things, like nobody thinks Lutefisk is good. Then it's weirdos who are like "Tomatoes ewww I'm a 5 year old"

I could and add that, no matter what the food is, if it’s all that’s available, and you would simply starve to death, you might eat them. Brussel sprouts, avocado, whatever it is. Even if it’s slimy or hyper spicy, you’ll find a way.
You can tell that 60% of this article is American. Most of the food isn't even close to the first part.

This seems more like a list of everyday foods that people don't like, except for a few.
As a very fussy eater there's loads I could put on this list 😔 I don't eat fruit or vegetables (except carrots with roast and potatoes) I can't eat meat unless it has no fat, or I know it's chicken breast or steak (no skin, sinew etc) I actually feel quite embarrassed that I'm like this. I have no idea why!!!
When I think of it I'm not so picky anymore since I began thinking a lot more about war. I'd rather eat this than my cat in a critical situation. When we had food shortage in WW2 people would sell cat meat as rabbit. But rabbit meat is white. I would not eat a rabbit either today, but if I must I will.
Lima beans needs to be on this list: their taste and texture makes me wonder why anyone eats them. I've only had one instance where eating them wasn't a chore.

I'm adding BEETS. They are sweetened dirt. No. Just no. I'd sooner have another go at durian than eat a beet.
As a vegetarian, I will still try nearly anything but meat, and even have tried sushi, etc. I'm not picky. I'm amazed I'm called picky or fussy by people who will drown food in ketchup, mayo, mustard, and refuse to eat a leaf of lettuce.
Hm... where's the Mett? Like delicious minced raw pork on a breadroll with onion rings. Yummy! ♡
