It is probably impossible to find a food that everyone loves, there will always be someone who hates it with all their heart. Even the most common things that a lot of recipes may contain. It is interesting how different people can eat the same thing, but have a different reaction to the taste or even perceive it differently.

Even though the Latin maxim says that there is no point in disputing tastes, people love to give their opinions on food. Reddit user jamboamericano wanted to know people’s opinions on foods that are hyped up but “quite simply suck.” They received 3k responses so take a look at the most popular ones that quite a lot of people agreed on.

Consistently mediocre, albeit overpriced. If I go there for a cup of tea, I know about what I'm going to get for four bucks. In most locations, most of the year, I can order white hot chocolate with peppermint and cinnamon, and get as much. It's a safe bet.

This is just silly. There are types of caviar that aren't expensive, particularly because you're not meant to shovel it in with a fork. I absolutely love caviar, and it has nothing to do with showing off or being rich (I'm not).

Like a lot of shellfish, it has to be fresh from the ocean. If you have it in a tank at the supermarket where they just sit there it's not worth it. Back on PEI, Canada; 70% of houses are having fresh lobster on Mother's Day right off the boat. Can't beat it.

A good avocado is like manna from heaven. A bad avocado... literally a punch in the arm is better than a bad avocado. Unforch you can't access good avocado unless you have your own tree and it's at least a few decades old.

We used to have avocado trees when I lived in SoCal. When it's five minutes from tree to plate, still warm from the sun, with that perfect taste and texture.... But then I lived in the UK, and experienced the saddest avocados ever. I smuggled some back from SoCal once so my local friends could understand what we're banging on about with "OMG CALIFORNIA HASS AVOCADOS!"

It is bland by itself - give it another go with a squeeze of lemon juice for acidity, and some salt. That's the bare minimum. Also good with some black pepper, or tabasco sauce, or a wee bit of garlic (you don't want to overpower the avocado though)

Always buy them hard, stem in place, put them on the counter by coffee station. Squeeze the shoulder lightly each morning. When it starts to give a little, pop the stem off. If it's green underneath it's good today or tomorrow. If you need to keep put in the fridge. After a while of doing this and checking each day you will get real good at the timing and not loose so many to over ripe.

avocados are horrible for the environment. each one 150g avocado contributes 850 grams of GHG and take 227-320 liters of water to grow. While those that love them are quick to point out that they aren't as damaging as meat, that doesn't negate the fact that they are one of the worst non-meat food products (along with strawberries, cranberries, corn, spinach, almonds and soybeans) that just continue to grow in popularity while the masses continue to repeat the refrain of "not my fault the planet's f*cked up"

In the Netherlands it can be tricky to get good ones, I always say 'soft skin, hard flesh' (don't think dirty, you!) You just take them into your hand and softly squeeze them, when you can squeeze the skin but feel the flesh underneath is hard, you have a good one. Works 9/10 times for me. The one time it doesn't work is because the pit is rotting first.
