People Are Joining This Thread Ranting About Overhyped Foods They Don’t Understand And Here Are 34 Of Them
It is probably impossible to find a food that everyone loves, there will always be someone who hates it with all their heart. Even the most common things that a lot of recipes may contain. It is interesting how different people can eat the same thing, but have a different reaction to the taste or even perceive it differently.
Even though the Latin maxim says that there is no point in disputing tastes, people love to give their opinions on food. Reddit user jamboamericano wanted to know people’s opinions on foods that are hyped up but “quite simply suck.” They received 3k responses so take a look at the most popular ones that quite a lot of people agreed on.

I don't get the appeal of chili that is made to be as hot and spicy as humanly possible, to the point that it hurts to eat it. "I make my chili with the five hottest peppers known to man and a dash of snake venom to kick it up a notch" Why?

Caviar
I feel like whoever buys that s**t doesn't actually like it and uses it to flaunt their money
This is just silly. There are types of caviar that aren't expensive, particularly because you're not meant to shovel it in with a fork. I absolutely love caviar, and it has nothing to do with showing off or being rich (I'm not).
Oysters, I've never tried them and I never want to, they just look like big boogers to me, sorry for the mental image.
Macarons. Expensive air cookies that still manage to stick to your teeth.
Kombucha. I know it is a drink, but still
Liver. Just......no.
As someone from the UK I don't get why so many people here love mushy peas. I find peas relatively tasteless and gross as they are, mushing them just makes the texture gross as well
Kale. I don’t care how it’s prepared, there’s just no point to it.
If it's prepared and cooked properly, Kale is delicious. Especially Scottish black kale. My family loves it and it's full of nutrients like iron and vitamins.
Me: "I hate kale." Internet: "You just haven't used the right recipe!" Trust me, I have prepared it a dozen different ways. I really wanted to like kale, I really did. I absolutely hate the taste no matter how it is prepared.
Not only does it taste awful, how long do you have to chew the s**t so it finally breaks down?!

Kale was cattle feed until it got a marketing department lol!!! I remember reading a story about this lady who was at the grocery store buying so much kale and the person behind her was like 'excuse me--sorry--can i ask how you prepare it? I've been trying everything' and the lady was like 'i. It's. It's for my peacocks. I could not tell you. Sorry.' XDDDD
It was also used in salad bars…as decoration & to keep the ice clean under the dressings clean!

I was once asked how to store Kale, in the fridge or on the counter. I told them that the best place for Kale is in the trash.
Kale is delicious! One of my favorite salads is chopped kale with shredded brussels

The Dutch way to eat kale is sooo good! Use 1 kilo potaoes and 600 gram of fine chopped kale. Mix with mashed potatoes with some salt, use real mash, not from a packet), leave to heat properly. Add baked pieces of bacon, gravy and serve with meat (such as meatballs, schnitzel, cordon blue, sausage, etc). Man, it's one of my absolute favourite dishes.
I despise kale as well. raw, bakes, fried, boiled (idk how else you can make it), just ew. i can eat it, but I will never enjoy it.
If I liked it I would be eating it like a rabbit- my iron is lower than the one kid from school that broke all the teachers supplies for fun. Its low man
I like raw kale in my salad. I don't understand the hate. But I love all leafy greens.
I love fresh and cooked kale. I truly have always enjoyed it and am thankful it's become so popular because now it's easier to find. They're not for everyone but they're for me.
Kale is just a species of cabbage. And there's nothing wrong with cabbage.
Nasty I tried it and taste like seaweed. But I think if it is fixed right it could taste good
I like kale chips, but you need SO much kale to just get a little bowl full, and buying it premade is just ridiculously expensive.
Kale smoothies are awesome. 1 banana, a few strawberries, Greek yogurt, almond milk and 1 big sprig of kale. Yummy.
That's not a kale smoothie, that's a fruit smoothie with some kale thrown in. 😋 Kale by itself is usually too bitter for me, but if it's in a salad mix or blended in a smoothie I don't mind it

Dehydrate them with nutritional yeast on top! Makes yummy chips!
Raw kale isn't even as healthy as they say it is. It's full of oxalic acid, which can cause kidney stones and calcium depletion if you eat large quantities. Same with most greens, but kale is especially bad. Cooking or freezing helps break down the acid.
There are so many other greens that are just as nutritious but not bitter and tough like kale. My favorite is baby spinach.
WE LOVE KALE. We don’t eat it raw, however, but lightly steamed, in sausage soup, or in other dishes, it is great.
Well it is very healthy, that's at least one point. That being said, in the Netherlands, kale stew is like a national favourite but we mash it with loads of salt, butter, potato and bacon to make it taste good so.. I do get your point :p
Sauté it with a little oil. That way it slides out of the pan into the trash easier.
The texture is the problem. Always makes me feel like I'm eating those plastic decorative leaves they used to put under food in the store.
My elderly mum was once served raw kale in a salad. She was disgusted, her family used to grow it to feed to the chickens!
Only way is to spritz it with Olive Oil and parmesean and bake it into chips
Try kale chips some olive oil salt pit it in the oven or air fryer wham bam yes ma'am delicious 😋
Southern cooked kale, or kale and collards together, are heavenly. My grandparents cooked them low and slow with a scoop of fat from the fat jar in the fridge (ham and bacon fat). When they are soft and fragrant, serve with vinegar or pepper vinegar with cornbread or a full meal.
I make a kale and white bean soup that's delicious. Cooking it in the pressure cooker is the key to rich flavor.
The only way I have ever had Kale is in chip form, and they were delicious.
I think I'm allergic to kale. It's makes my mouth burn and my throat feel swollen.
Do you get the same reaction to cruciferous vegetables in the same family? (cabbage, chard, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower)
Load More Replies...Love it. Multi cooker recipe: pan fry onions, add spices, bung in dry lentils and kale, pressure cook and boom, you have a dish that doesn't look like much but is nice and spicy with 3 textures.
Kale and potatoe mashed together is a staple winter dish in the Netherlands. Add a smoked sausage and some gravy (bonuspoints for making a little gravy lake in your mash), it's so good ❤️
Very healthy and can be prepared oh so good! We have a Lot of fresh kale growing in our garden! Yum!!
Cant' live without it. Just golden-fry garlic and await to try most of the water...
Yeah, I like it. Great mixed in mash potato. Or with black pudding, mini roast potatoes, tomatoes and bacon as a salad. Or even roasted with some salt - Kale crisps are awesome!!

Then I see people dip it in butter and yea thats fine and all and it tastes great, but then I get the feeling I'm just tasting the butter and what the f**k is the point of this $30 dish exactly?
Like a lot of shellfish, it has to be fresh from the ocean. If you have it in a tank at the supermarket where they just sit there it's not worth it. Back on PEI, Canada; 70% of houses are having fresh lobster on Mother's Day right off the boat. Can't beat it.

Only edible if it’s absolutely drenched in hot sauce. It’s mushy, bland, makes me bloated, and strangely, sometimes gives me a headache. 2 out of 5 times found a hair in the burrito. I gave up.
Or if you’re drunk, the bar closed, and there’s no other place open.
Five Guys. Not sure if it’s the same as in the US (I’m in the UK) or I just got a dodgy meal but it was just greasy overpriced mess.
Pop tarts
Hot Cheetos. I absolutely love spicy foods but they taste like bleeda**. whatever that means
Hot Flamin' Cheetos is my guilty pleasure. My butt does not thank me the next day, though
Truffle oil
The majority of truffle oil isn't actually made with truffles. The main ingredient is a chemical designed in a laboratory to mimic the aroma of truffles (synthetic 2,4-dithiapentane).
Beets. My wife tried to convince me to like them by saying "they taste like dirt!" Needless to say, this was an ineffective approach.
Ranch dressing. It’s vile. People put it on EVERYTHING. gross. Just stop it.
When it was first introduced, it was a packet mix that you combined with mayonnaise and real buttermilk. It was delicious then. You can still buy the mix and that's the only way to prepare it IMHO.
Olives
Kimchi, it just doesn't taste as interesting as people say it does
Shrimp, and any other sea-roaches
Shrimp is pretty cool if it's cooked well. Not overcooked and not drenched in seasoning. With most of these you just got to cook it lightly with minimal additions to keep the true taste.
Seafood. It stinks, it looks gross, and every time I've been convinced to try it it's been rank. My husband and I have agreed many times that we'd have to be starving to death before we ever considered seafood as a meal. I do not understand how anybody can enjoy it. It creates a visceral negative reaction in me.
I love seafood, but I'm careful where I source it. No dodgy diner seafood, please.

I don't think it sucks but I don't get why popcorn is so cherished.
I don't like the flavor, the texture, or the f*****g kernels that get stuck in my teeth. The smell is always terrible to me and it lingers.
But what I really hate is having to explain to people offering it to me that I actually don't like popcorn, no, I really don't, yes, even that type, yes it's a popular snack, no, I really don't like it.
Reading these posts makes me think these are a lot of pizza, burgers, and fries fans. It is interesting to branch out and try other foods. I don't know why some of these foods are considered to be "hyped". Who hypes tofu????
I think some are conflating over hyped with simply being well known. To me, over hyped is akin to saying it's the best and nothing will compare to it.

I would say the most overhyped things I've tasted were some of the major food chain meals, didn't live up to the hype. There were some others but those are local to the region and might not be so common elsewhere....but none lived up to the hype.
Are people f*****g serious? They are downvoting the people who say they hate pickles or mushrooms just because they do? People seem to forget that too many downvotes gets a person BANNED and shouldn’t be used to express dislike for someone’s opinion. Load More Replies...Mine would be hot dogs, but I have a good reason. When I was little I loved them, but one time I got the flu and spent all night puking them up. Now (25+ years later) my brain has those cross-linked so badly even the smell of hot dogs cooking makes me nauseous. Most types of sausage are also guilty by association for me.
For me, the same happened with mashed potatoes. I slowly get to be able to eat (or even enjoy) it, but only if it's made in a bery specific way and from scratch. I think I'll never be able to eat the powdered one from the box (that I used to eat as I child before the flu) again.

Most of them aren't even hyped, but discarding a food as being overrated without even trying it seems like an irrelevant opinion, I get not wanting to try something because you're repelled by the way it looks/feels but you can't call it overrated. Most of these are foods enjoyed by certain groups or are an acquired taste.
So many of these are foods I love but can't eat anymore because of allergies :( I should really stop reading posts like this because it makes me miss them even more!
I developed a shrimp allergy seemingly overnight. Now that I can't eat them and won't make them because I can't eat them, my husband has them every chance he gets when we go out to eat. F*****g bastard.
Load More Replies...The hype of these foods are great if you know how to cook or season them right. If you've had a bad experience with a food, then I can see how ppl don't understand the hype. For instance, my husband never liked Brussel sprouts his whole life but when we got married, I made it for him and he was worried that he would offend me by not eating them. I had him try mine, and now, its one of his vegetables I make and he can't get enough of them. So, just know what your doing can go a long way!
