People Are Joining This Thread Ranting About Overhyped Foods They Don’t Understand And Here Are 34 Of Them
It is probably impossible to find a food that everyone loves, there will always be someone who hates it with all their heart. Even the most common things that a lot of recipes may contain. It is interesting how different people can eat the same thing, but have a different reaction to the taste or even perceive it differently.
Even though the Latin maxim says that there is no point in disputing tastes, people love to give their opinions on food. Reddit user jamboamericano wanted to know people’s opinions on foods that are hyped up but “quite simply suck.” They received 3k responses so take a look at the most popular ones that quite a lot of people agreed on.

Starbucks
Consistently mediocre, albeit overpriced. If I go there for a cup of tea, I know about what I'm going to get for four bucks. In most locations, most of the year, I can order white hot chocolate with peppermint and cinnamon, and get as much. It's a safe bet.
And making it hell for real coffee shops! Flat white is not large latte with extra foam, machiatto is an espresso with a small amount of usually frothed up milk, not a giant cup filled with coffee, syrup and enough milk to drown a cow!
Load More Replies...I truly feel they burn their beans in the roasting process. You can taste it. A few years ago, we bought a small home roaster, signed up for monthly green bean delivery, and learned how to roast beans properly to create the various roasts. The coffee is thousands of times better than SBucks.
And that's why it's often referred to as, "Charbucks."
Load More Replies...The beverages (I won't call them "coffee") are not bad. I like to indulge on them from time to time, the same way one indulges on an ice-cream. Not for a day to day basis in my opinion.
Ever since I have a bean grinder and coffee syrups I do not buy anything from them. Not even their beans. I stick to my good ol' Douwe Egberts. (Dutch coffee, far older than SB and knows how to roast their beans) With SB it still tastes like bean water even with an extra scoop of bean grind. Douwe egberts? No. Perfection.
In China, Starbucks in a luxury brand, last time I visited home, I forgot where I was, ordered a latte and watch the person just pour a bunch of warm milk into the coffee. Thought to myself, right, back in the USA.
Can not stand the taste of Starbucks "coffee".It tastes like Weetbix.
Horrid and bitter coffee that nothing added can redeem. I tried it a couple of times with a friend who loved it, but never again.
My husband and I say that people that get "coffee" from there are just pretending... it's all milk shakes!
Starbucks is great for non coffee frappes when they're no milkshake places around
I work at a Starbucks, and everything there is overpriced, prepackaged trash. For as much as the food (that's just prepacked, thawed, and flash heated) you could get a real burger and fries that actually tastes like something. The coffee taste burnt, the other drinks are nothing special and the same year round. And the wastefulness!! Coffee brewed and dumped every 15 minutes, all the food thrown away is criminal. ....lost my job due to covid so gotta pay the bills somehow 🤦😣
Never been to one! I buy a jar of Costa Rican coffee granules for £2.95. it lasts me all week. getting up in time to have a couple of mugs before work is the secret to not spilling hot liquid all over yourself and the car.
In 2019 Starbucks pays £18.3m tax but £348m in dividends Source : The Guardian
I like starbucks because it's consistently mediocre. Sometimes I'm not feeling adventurous. I know that the latte I get in Chicago will taste the same as the one I get Atlanta and the same as the one I get in my home town.
THEY BURN THEIR BEANS!! i cant stand how their coffee tastes. one time i was gifted a bag of starbucks brand beans and they were good, so i know they burn them on purpose to make us buy the sugary drinks
I make my coffee at home. A can of coffee costs roughly four dollars and I know what I'm getting. Another safe bet.
McDonald's has better coffee tbh. Except the time the location by me was using fart water in all their drinks anyway. Surprising how fast they demolished and rebuilt.
Load More Replies...I prefer McDonald's coffee honestly. At least the basic stuff. An Americano at McDonald's tastes better to me than Starbucks.
It's a luxury in Brazil, and a terrible coffee - and we drink a very dark and strong coffee, not that "American tea"
One day I will visit your amazing country; I'll be sure to leave the "American tea" at home🤣
Load More Replies...It's probably my lower class taste buds but I prefer convenience store coffee. It's cheaper, no half day aftertaste, and I control the add ons.
I've been in one twice. Ordered a drink for myself once. Second time I was looking after my god kids who were hellbent on getting some concoction. Too bitter and too sweet. The logo is funny tho
I purposely avoid them. Their coffee always tastes burnt. I used to live near an independently owned coffee shop and got hooked on espresso. So when Starbucks opened a shop in my favorite vacation hotel I was excited. Nope. I'll drink Speedway coffee before I spend a dime at Starbucks.
It's f*****g coffee!! What is wrong with people. I can pay £3 for a coffee in a chain or £2.50 for a jar that will make me 159 coffees. I have no sympathy for those consumerist muppets that are prepared to pay for someone else to make them a hot drink...
I rarely get coffee outside of home, so when I did it usually was Starbucks because it was a bit of luxery. Now I live in a city that doesn't have one, but they have a cafe of the brand I drink at home (Douwe Egberts). Soooo much better
What country are you in? I've never heard of Douwe Egberts.
Load More Replies...I only go there as a treat and to try some new concoctions but everyday or even every week? Heck no. My coffee press makes better coffee.
burnt beans, syrups are gross and they use too much of them, and they don't even use actual half and half like you have to ask for it and half the time they 'forget'. I make coffees at home with average joe ingredients and equipment, and *nice* syrup, and end up with a better drink!
The only time I was eager to go to Starbucks was when I was visiting my comatose boyfriend and needed a little pick me up to get through the hours I sat at his side. There was a Starbucks in the hospital and was the only place open so I didn't care; it was "coffee". Aside from that, can't stand them. It's weak, bland, and, probably won't make sense to many, it gives that back of tongue feel that makes you question it (maybe an overly acidic or bitter thing). Oh and he's fine now and I haven't been to Starbucks since (about 4 years)
When I lived in the US, when I for some reason went to Starbucks, I ordered either plain coffee with milk (probably had some fancy name), and it always tasted burned. But all the other stuff was way too sweet. Tea was ok. Note: I am not from a tea drinking country, so anything that is better than a teabag of your generic shitty western tea was good enough
Too many things added, if you want sweetener there is no regular sugar just umpteen expensive types of syrup.
I kinda grew with this one. Although nothing can tear me away from my s’more ice coffee. It’s literally got whipped marshmallow in it!
I like their beans, but those and make my drinks at home. I love their dragonfruit drink though!!
Yeah!! Think about it! Starbucks counts on people going to Starbucks just to show how trendy, well off, 'cool', or otherwise one of the special people. ( I know, I know, this is not to label YOU, just pointing out that Starbucks wouldn't be so successful without these groups of people who patronize a place with outrageously priced products during a time when young people have little hope of enjoying the perks other generations have had.) Example, I know quite a few friends of my daughter that ONLY get their coffee at a Starbucks, and not just once in awhile. They look down their noses at me and others who see through the marketing. Yes, Starbucks is fine, but is it a smart use of your income?essentials
Starbucks opened a branch here in Trinidad a few years back and I swear there were lines waiting to get in. People still post pictures with their coffee cups. Of course they also never post pictures of the local brands/cups. You can get coffee for a third of the price elsewhere btw. It was soooo annoying.
DennyS...random here, but what is it like living in Trinidad? How is the weather like right now for your country? I love learning about other places!
Load More Replies...I am proud to say I've never been in a Starbucks. I worked for a car dealership who bought their coffee to brew for the customers to drink while they waited. I did drink it because I had no choice. Not impressed. I thought it was bitter. I will take McDonald's coffee over theirs any day.
For some reason all Starbucks coffee has a weird Weetbix after taste :/
Overpriced mediocre >coffee<. Don't care about the lattes, cappuccinos, or other "stuff". Just want COFFEE, and 7-11 is just _fine_.
The first (and only) time we went to Starbucks they gave us our beverages for free. I was glad, because as soon as we were out of their sight we threw them away. It was awful!
$4 for a cup of tea???? Are you stupid. I would like to sell you a dollar bill for four dollars.
I don't get the appeal of chili that is made to be as hot and spicy as humanly possible, to the point that it hurts to eat it. "I make my chili with the five hottest peppers known to man and a dash of snake venom to kick it up a notch" Why?
That, and tofu.
Instagram food (so foods with so much added nonsense just for the sake of a photo, not for taste)
Caviar
I feel like whoever buys that s**t doesn't actually like it and uses it to flaunt their money
This is just silly. There are types of caviar that aren't expensive, particularly because you're not meant to shovel it in with a fork. I absolutely love caviar, and it has nothing to do with showing off or being rich (I'm not).
Oysters, I've never tried them and I never want to, they just look like big boogers to me, sorry for the mental image.
Macarons. Expensive air cookies that still manage to stick to your teeth.
Kombucha. I know it is a drink, but still
Liver. Just......no.
As someone from the UK I don't get why so many people here love mushy peas. I find peas relatively tasteless and gross as they are, mushing them just makes the texture gross as well
Kale. I don’t care how it’s prepared, there’s just no point to it.
If it's prepared and cooked properly, Kale is delicious. Especially Scottish black kale. My family loves it and it's full of nutrients like iron and vitamins.
Lobster. I uh, I don't get it. It always tastes a bit flavorless and just alright to me. Then I see people dip it in butter and yea thats fine and all and it tastes great, but then I get the feeling I'm just tasting the butter and what the f**k is the point of this $30 dish exactly?
Like a lot of shellfish, it has to be fresh from the ocean. If you have it in a tank at the supermarket where they just sit there it's not worth it. Back on PEI, Canada; 70% of houses are having fresh lobster on Mother's Day right off the boat. Can't beat it.
This will not be popular…Taco Bell.
Only edible if it’s absolutely drenched in hot sauce. It’s mushy, bland, makes me bloated, and strangely, sometimes gives me a headache. 2 out of 5 times found a hair in the burrito. I gave up.
Or if you’re drunk, the bar closed, and there’s no other place open.
Five Guys. Not sure if it’s the same as in the US (I’m in the UK) or I just got a dodgy meal but it was just greasy overpriced mess.
Pop tarts
Hot Cheetos. I absolutely love spicy foods but they taste like bleeda**. whatever that means
Hot Flamin' Cheetos is my guilty pleasure. My butt does not thank me the next day, though
Truffle oil
The majority of truffle oil isn't actually made with truffles. The main ingredient is a chemical designed in a laboratory to mimic the aroma of truffles (synthetic 2,4-dithiapentane).
Beets. My wife tried to convince me to like them by saying "they taste like dirt!" Needless to say, this was an ineffective approach.
Ranch dressing. It’s vile. People put it on EVERYTHING. gross. Just stop it.
When it was first introduced, it was a packet mix that you combined with mayonnaise and real buttermilk. It was delicious then. You can still buy the mix and that's the only way to prepare it IMHO.
Olives
Kimchi, it just doesn't taste as interesting as people say it does
Shrimp, and any other sea-roaches
Shrimp is pretty cool if it's cooked well. Not overcooked and not drenched in seasoning. With most of these you just got to cook it lightly with minimal additions to keep the true taste.
Seafood. It stinks, it looks gross, and every time I've been convinced to try it it's been rank. My husband and I have agreed many times that we'd have to be starving to death before we ever considered seafood as a meal. I do not understand how anybody can enjoy it. It creates a visceral negative reaction in me.
I love seafood, but I'm careful where I source it. No dodgy diner seafood, please.
Food: Sweet potato
Drink: Kombucha
I can't understand the enjoyment of either, as both taste like dirt
I don't think it sucks but I don't get why popcorn is so cherished.
I don't like the flavor, the texture, or the f*****g kernels that get stuck in my teeth. The smell is always terrible to me and it lingers.
But what I really hate is having to explain to people offering it to me that I actually don't like popcorn, no, I really don't, yes, even that type, yes it's a popular snack, no, I really don't like it.
Reading these posts makes me think these are a lot of pizza, burgers, and fries fans. It is interesting to branch out and try other foods. I don't know why some of these foods are considered to be "hyped". Who hypes tofu????
I think some are conflating over hyped with simply being well known. To me, over hyped is akin to saying it's the best and nothing will compare to it.
Load More Replies...Seems like people love hating on some of the healthiest foods you can eat. They might not all taste great, but your body will certainly thank you in the long run.
I think a lot of healthy foods can taste great if you learn how to prepare them well and the way you like best!
Load More Replies...This thread makes no sense! Someone likes some type of food, some don't.
I would say the most overhyped things I've tasted were some of the major food chain meals, didn't live up to the hype. There were some others but those are local to the region and might not be so common elsewhere....but none lived up to the hype.
Are people f*****g serious? They are downvoting the people who say they hate pickles or mushrooms just because they do? People seem to forget that too many downvotes gets a person BANNED and shouldn’t be used to express dislike for someone’s opinion. Unless the person is going out of their damn way to be frigging rude, trolling, or spamming don’t downvote someone! SMH
PLEASE DO NOT DOWN VOTE an opinion you disagree with, it can and will get the poster banned. BP FIX YOUR SYSTEM
I will downvote a post or opinion I don't like or disagree with, if there is something bugging me. But I barely downvote stuff, mostly upvote or ignore. I did downvote this comment I am replying to for example.
Load More Replies...This one is genetic. If you don't have the gene, cilantro tastes like soap. If you do have it, it's lovely and herbaceous.
Load More Replies...Kombucha tastes like toes dropped in battery acid yet it's all the rage.
Why isn't foie gras on the list? Apart from the vile treatment of geese it also tastes really bad. I tried it once many years ago and had to discreetly spit it out in my napkin.
This just in: Food preferences are highly individual and everyone has different likes and dislikes. Shocking.
I think people just like to share their opinions, and then other people like to jump in to express how strongly they agree or disagree haha
Load More Replies...Mine would be hot dogs, but I have a good reason. When I was little I loved them, but one time I got the flu and spent all night puking them up. Now (25+ years later) my brain has those cross-linked so badly even the smell of hot dogs cooking makes me nauseous. Most types of sausage are also guilty by association for me.
For me, the same happened with mashed potatoes. I slowly get to be able to eat (or even enjoy) it, but only if it's made in a bery specific way and from scratch. I think I'll never be able to eat the powdered one from the box (that I used to eat as I child before the flu) again.
Load More Replies...Blackberries can kill. I’m trying to be lighthearted about this but my dad fell whilst picking blackberries today. We didn’t find him until it was too late. Bye dad. 14.03.37 - 05.08.22
Omg, are you saying you lost your dad, today, just like that? I'm so sorry to read this, conincidentally this was my father's death anniversary too. My heartfelt condolences to you.
Load More Replies...Hmmm, it's not a difficult thought to grasp - people like different foods. Not everyone likes the same thing. What's 'great' for one person is 'taste like soap' to another. This doesn't mean the item has been overhyped, it just means you don't like it much. That's fine. Move on and eat the foods you love.
For me it’s mustard, I literally cannot stand the taste. And I don’t get how people can enjoy banana and avocado, so slimy and mushy, ugh. but, to each their own 🤷♀️
I get why people are hating on the overly processed foods, like Nutella, poptarts, etc... but sometimes the sh!tty food is what hits the spot
Oh. And nut milk. How did this one get left off? I'm not saying that it's all bad. I rather enjoy some of it.... BUT. But, but, but.... IT'S NOT MILK. It's nut juice. You're drinking nut juice. Who's with me?
What's the problem with drinking nut juice? Hardly a new development.
Load More Replies...How did mayo not make this list? I know folks love it but those of us that don't, REALLY DON'T.
Noooooooooooooo 😫. Maybe it's my national bias but chips are just sad potato sticks without mayo
Load More Replies...For me, alcohol. People don't believe me when I say I don't like it. I don't dislike it because it's bad for you. I dislike it because they all taste terrible to me.
Most of them aren't even hyped, but discarding a food as being overrated without even trying it seems like an irrelevant opinion, I get not wanting to try something because you're repelled by the way it looks/feels but you can't call it overrated. Most of these are foods enjoyed by certain groups or are an acquired taste.
So many of these are foods I love but can't eat anymore because of allergies :( I should really stop reading posts like this because it makes me miss them even more!
I developed a shrimp allergy seemingly overnight. Now that I can't eat them and won't make them because I can't eat them, my husband has them every chance he gets when we go out to eat. F*****g bastard.

I had him try mine, and now, its one of his vegetables I make and he can't get enough of them. So, just know what your doing can go a long way!
Broccoli. The taste is awful, but the texture! Makes me want to vomit!
I agree with all those items except sweet potato. However I hate the orange one, that overseas seems to be the only one. The red variety (kumara) only.
