Flight Attendant Shares What Hotel Hacks She Knows, Goes Viral On TikTok

Interview
ADVERTISEMENT

A flight attendant from Salt Lake City in Utah is going viral on TikTok for sharing tips that you should keep in mind while staying at a hotel to be healthy, safe, and comfortable.

Katherine Kamalani‘s video was viewed a whopping 5.7 million times, got more than 1.2 million likes, and received over 3.3k comments on the video-sharing platform. So it’s no wonder that plenty of people are talking about it.

While the 30-year-old’s hacks are useful and lots of people loved them, some social media users have pointed out that they aren’t groundbreaking. Some think that that the advice is basic common sense, others think they’re a bit ‘paranoid.’ Scroll down, check out Kat’s hotel hacks, and let us know in the comments what you think of them and if you have any of your own tips for staying at hotels, dear Pandas. And scroll down for Bored Panda’s interview with Kat.

Her video was incredibly popular. Some people loved Kat’s hotel hacks while others thought they were just common sense

Never say your room number out loud. Just in case there’s anyone around, and you don’t want them knowing where you’re staying

Always make sure there’s no one behind you when going into your room

Check if there’s anyone in the room — behind curtains, under bed, etc

Lock the doors and alwasy make sure you lock the top lock

Make sure about bed bugs. Check on the corners

Take of any decorative pillows or top comforters. They never wash those

Never put your bag on the bed. It’s been through the airport, and it’s disgusting

If you don’t have a refrigerator, put your food in an ice bucket, and there you go

Kat told Bored Panda that she was “shocked” when her TikTok video went viral. “It’s so important especially now to try to stay safe and clean,” she said, after mentioning that she saw lots of comments where people admitted to not following any of her tips.

According to the flight attendant, she has noticed some changes at hotels since the start of the pandemic. Now, she notices people practicing social distancing at hotel gyms, as well as pools.

Kat had one more traveling tip to share with us: “If you don’t use the plastic wrap for the ice bucket put it over your remote. That thing sees so many hands but doesn’t get cleaned,” she said.

Kat has 7 tips in total, including never saying your room number aloud (just in case there’s someone around you), making sure that there’s nobody behind you when you go into your hotel room, and locking the doors properly.

Some social media users thought that these tips may be a tad too ‘paranoid,’ even if they do help keep travelers safe. However, it’s better to be safe than sorry, right?

She also advises travelers to check the corners of the mattress for bed bugs, to remove the top pillows and comforters (according to her, hotel staff rarely wash these), never put your dirty bag on the bed, and if you don’t have a fridge in your room, just plop your food into an ice bucket.

From the first few, I'd say she's pretty paranoid! The others are not exactly hacks. They're common sense and people will do things the way they think they need to depending on their situation. Very poor.

Great idea - there's always that one slit between the curtains where the light shines in like a laser...

Wipe off all door handles, faucet knobs, toilet lever, light switches, remote control, etc. You have no idea what's on them, and you do NOT want to know. And yes, that may make me paranoid, but I don't know if anyone wipes those down, so I do. Yes, I carry my own clenaing wipes. You ever swab a light switch and find out what grows on the agar in the petri dish? In a nutshell: YUCK.

Did you ever get sick from that? Because I never did, and I touched a lot of doorknobs, remotes, etc. Most stuff that makes pretty colors in petri dishes is totally harmless and already on your hands and skin. Unless you’re immuno comprimised, you shouldn’t worry so much.

I'm surprised this went viral. All pretty much common knowledge and advice. Add don't put your home address or entire name on luggage tags. People can see that information and use it for home robbery in your absence or ask for you by name in hotel pretending to be employee to gain access to your room or to lure you out.

It's true. And if you've ever seen a murder mystery, maybe we should start! Jumping a burglar mid robbery is typically a death sentence, intended or not.

Okay wow, I just check in and enjoy my stay. o___O Are people really like this when they check into a hotel? The thing about never saying your room number out loud is completely new to me as well... What kind of connections do these people have? Maybe it's because I have no life, but I would never in a million years expect random people to be interested in my room number.

So, thanks for the downvotes, people. I am usually paranoid (as in: I'm afraid to go outside at night, etc.), so I'm not that naive. I just sincerely had never heard about people treating room number like nuclear waste... And prefer to actually enjoy my stay at a hotel.

One of the last hotels I stayed in, pipes broke and flooded my room. Another place was full of cockroaches. Didn't know this until I was ready to go to bed. I opened a closet door and the back of the door was covered in them. Had no way to go anywhere else so I was stuck. When I got home, I left everything in the yard. Emptied the suitcase and my purse outside making sure I had not brought any creepy crawlies home. Yet another hotel caught fire. Needless to say, I don't stay in hotels anymore.

If they don’t wash the comforters, maybe we should all make a habit of pouring conditioner on them before we leave so that they have to. That is disgusting. And for what we pay, we deserve a sanitary environment.

They Absolutly do not. Once a month on rotation. Most can't handle the laundry. I don't care how over inflated the rooms price is..I've worked em all. Mom n pops tend to be nice..inns. Not as much privacy but the food is usually great. If they're handing out rubbers at the door, forget it for cleanliness but most are IMMACULATE
