Two days ago, a mom to a two-year-old toddler turned to the AITA community to ask for advice.
In a post that amassed 1.4k comments, the author One-Criticism5777 explained that she was flying across the country for Thanksgiving with her toddler and disabled husband. The family decided to splurge on 1st class tickets, but a fellow passenger was far from impressed upon seeing them sitting down in the premium aisle.
“We boarded early since my husband is disabled and when another 1st class passenger saw us, he started glaring,” the mom recounted. Shortly after, one flight attendant after another kept coming in to check whether the family was seated correctly.
The passenger kept getting more passive-aggressive, and now One-Criticism5777 wonders whether it was really her fault for booking 1st class tickets to fly with a toddler.
Mom wonders if she was wrong to fly first class with her toddler after an annoyed passenger kept complaining about sitting next to a child

I use noise canceling headphones or earbuds and a tablet with games, movies, and TV shows. Your child can do anything except kick my chair or spontaneously combust and it's none of my business. The only seats I don't want them in are in the cockpit.
It would have taken everything in my power not to "accidentally" swing my carry-on bag into his nuts. And God forbid if my husband over heard him call me that, which is probably why he just whispered it to you out of range of your husband. What a douchebag. This seriously pissed me off.
I would have asked him, "Excuse me. I didn't hear what you said. Please speak up." Then hope he says it again louder so others hear it. Let the other passengers show him who the c**t really, truly is!! Course in my younger years, I never backed down from a horse's behind like that. Invite him to meet me a baggage claim so we could take it outside.
Load More Replies...The only problem with bringing your children into first class that I can see is exposing them to mysogonistic, arrogant elitist pieces of beetle dung like this pond scum.
What makes them a misogynist? Don't get me wrong, clearly an AH, just wondering how you came to that conclusion?
Load More Replies...#1: "I paid too much money to be surrounded by children." Well, technically, OP spent more money since she purchased multiple tickets, so I feel like she would have been perfectly within her rights to respond, "WE paid too much money to be surrounded by douchebags." #2: If anyone had ever called my wife a fat c**t, he would have been carried off the plane with a broken jaw (and to be clear, it wouldn't be me doing the breaking). Yup, the guy would have been picking his teeth up off the cabin floor and probably complaining that he couldn't find his testicles.

That guy ruined his own flight with his attitude. Clearly the child was better behaved than he was. What he *should* have said upon exiting was "Your child was so well behaved it was a joy to spend the flight with her." Instead he was a hemorrhoid the whole time.
Or apologize for his earlier comments or just say nothing at all.
Load More Replies...NTA and I'm shocked anyone had the audacity to tell her otherwise. They paid just as much as he did for those seats. Sounds to me like the only disturbance was him.
if you think about it she bought 3 tickets so unless he was bringing others along then she paid at least twice as much
Load More Replies...People need to lower their expectations about the sanctity of their airplane experiences. Air travel is definitely a crapshoot with delays, cancellations, weather, noisy passengers, rude passengers, large passengers, small passengers. This family did exactly the right thing in purchasing comfortable seats together…and then sitting in them. First class seats don't guarantee no children. The only place children and toddlers aren't allowed is in the exit rows. This guy needs to apologize big time. He is the AH here.
"people pay extra to relax in 1st class". Isn't that exactly what OP did? WTF?
and for 3 people, not one, so a hell of a lot more than he paid.
Load More Replies...In the flight I mentioned on another post when I sat down I saw that the row in front of us had a baby of about 18 months. I shrugged and thought "Oh well." But the baby was very well-behaved, the parents were on top of it and took very good care of the few cries that she made. I was glad to see them next to me in the baggage claim area to tell the dad, "You and wife did a great job. Your baby too." They didn't speak much English but I could see from their expressions that they understood.
WTF...YTA for NOT WHOOPING DAT A$$ after he disrespected you and then going on the internet to ask if YOU were in the wrong because ONE miserable, entitled, SOB in the whole plane had an issue. 1st class isn't for the childless it's for whomever can afford it and YOU worked hard to treat yourself and your family. You should've asked him loudly if he doesn't like to fly with children due to his severe case of pedophilia and I guarantee after the whole plane stares him down he won't be so quick to say something again. But overall NTA.
OP handled that grown man's power trip like a champ. He was completely in the wrong. Not engaging and letting the flight attendant deal with him was excellent boundary setting and emotional control. OP's family is wrong too. If OP can afford first class seats, they have as much right to pay for them as anyone else.
NTA - Jesus.. look I.. reeeeally hate kids. Okay? The same way I hate dogs. The screaming, the barking, the smell, the demon wails in a compact space even ear plugs wouldnt be useful though. But this? This is totally unnecessary. The kid was quiet. That's literally my entire issue with them. They scream and the parents just do minimal effort to do anything about it. But this kid was *quiet*. Why in the hell did he have a problem? I'd love to be surrounded by non banshee screeching children. Love it. I have zero idea what this dude's issue is, but I imagine he only called her that name because he was put in his place and his little ego couldn't handle being wrong. Jfc.. I applaud this woman. This is decent parenting. This isn't just letting a kid summon Eldritch horrors with the screams of trumpets demons. She was cared for, she was taken care of. She had everything she needed, and they didn't *ignore her*. That's literally all I can ask for cause I know autistic kids can be a bit harder to calm down, especially with ears popping and being in a weird place packed with weird humans. I just.. this guy's a d**k
NTA, OP's kid wasn't disturbing him in the slightest, and it's none of his business what others do with their money. Also parents of 2yr olds DESERVE 1st class.
The guy was 100% right. Whiney petulant babies shouldn't allowed in first class. A problem he could have easily solved by removing himself and sitting in coach. In fact, I'm pretty sure he shouldn't have been permitted to fly unaccompanied, and since he proved himself to be less mature than a three year old, someone should have been assigned to keep him under control and in his seat.
Make him sit at the back of the plane! Ya know, a timeout sort of thing! LOL

The saying “it takes one to know one” applies to this situation. The only fat c**t in this story is the guy complaining. A well behaved toddler on a flight is a godsend and he should be happy for that. Some people forget that we used to be kids too.
Ist class is no different than economy or business. The difference is how much you want to spend and the legroom and amenities. At the end of the day the guy was in the wrong and maybe he should of asked to be seated somewhere else. He complained about being near a child, yet he was the child in this situation throwing an tantrum. It's a shame the flight attendants didn't tell him to stop harassing the family or else he would be moved or removed from the flight. Lately adults are worse than any child these days.
"Gripewater" and Manners Ought to have been given to the Rude, Offensive and Sexist Elitist Passenger ‼️👈🏾😠🤨🤔 So Name -Calling and Bullying is the Norm in 1st Class(less) and I suggest the Same Awful person be 'Outed' and Told to refrain from Bad Behavior Here.. I find the irony amusing. The gentleman (or not so much) was SO worried about a toddler ruining his flight experience that he sabotaged his own experience. The toddler never once did anything to disrupt anyone and the man spent the entire time unable to relax because of his own bias. I do feel sorry for the woman and her husband who had to deal with him. Yet it is satisfying to know the big baby complaining had a much more miserable experience over expectations of the toddler that were never realized.
NTA - the other pax was acting very entitled. Nearly 30 years ago when travelling with my infant daughter, I ran into a similar situation. I had my 8 month old daughter buckled into her car seat in the business class seat I purchased for her. She was literally coo'ing when entitled idiot started to sit in his seat in front of us. He immediately called the flight attendant over (disrupting boarding) demanding that we be moved. FA explained she would not move us - male version of Karen pax demanded to speak to her supervisor. Pilot came back. Pilot indicated he would not move us. Pax screamed (while the baby was happily playing with some ring toy). Pax boss who was seated in first class heard the commotion -came back. Boss asked FA to move pax to economy (upgrading the person who pax replaced), apologized to me, surrounding pax, and flight crew. He asked me if he could have my address (I gave him my business address). Two days latter I got a written apology from the idiot pax.
BTW - daughter had a bottle during takeoff and slept through to landing never fussing. Upgraded pax shared that her original center seat was between two rather drunk college-aged kids and near their rowdy friends coming back from some school trip.
Load More Replies...OP, you are just fine. You sat in the seats you paid for. You planned well so that your daughter was comfortable and happy. I pity his wife/so & kids because he is a selfish, entitled, toxic bully. Thank you for including the link to Gripe Drink, bet there would be a lot fewer crying babies on flights if people knew about it.
You paid your money for your child to go 1st class, just like the jerk making the fuss. You handled it better than I would have.
He's the real fat c*nt for letting a well-behaved child "ruin" his flight. After he swore at OP, she should've reported that to the attendants. Idk, don't think I'd feel very safe with someone like him around.
This wasn't a real question. No one thinks the OP is a blank-hole for paying with their own money for a seat in 1st class.
Retired airline supervisor here. OP is NTA here. You paid for your seats. You get to use them how you see fit. End of discussion. He has no say. His name calling is totally unacceptable. I don't have much tolerance for people like that. I would have been looking for a defensible reason to deny boarding his a**. If it's that big a deal for him, he can get off the plane and take another flight.
DiagnosedWolf's comment beat me to it. First class doesn't mean you can pick and choose who sits in it. Or even next to you. It buys better accoutrement, amenities, services, etc. Not discrimination. Or the right to hate on someone and disrupt their first class experience. As long as someone can buy a ticket and meets guidelines for safety and conduct they are able to be there. If the child was at least disruptive, I would understand irritation.
What??? That is some f*****g BS! I wish someone would tap me on the shoulder I’d be walking away with lots of zeroes added to my bank account for discrimination, harassment, undue stress, mental anguish and toxic flight attendants/environments. You have every right to sit in first class with your children/kids, including just putting a f*****g laptop on an empty seat that you paid for, and I vehemently disagree with your family’s suggestion to capitulate and fly economy next time. Why? Last time I checked there are no contingencies upon booking first class. You can fly first class but only adults, no blacks, no LGBTQIA’s, no elderly, no fat ppl, and so on and on. That is absurd. To me this is straight forward. Airlines sell first class seats for profits, and because ppl like to feel exclusive and comfortable with more space, they charge them for it. Which is fine. Economics 101, supply and demand. But nowhere does it say your 1st class tickets ensures you privacy, serenity, and total
You paid for the seats. Obviously the airline allows children in first class. End of story. Bonus is that your child is well behaved and doesn't suffer discomfort some toddlers do.
A first class ticket is not a guarantee of a smooth, silent, relaxing, kid free trip to Nervana while in a constant state of bliss. A first class ticket is a ticket to sit in the first class section of an aircraft. That is all.
You paid for a seat and a butt is a butt. Pls don’t let nobody make u feel badly about buy a seat NEXT to YOYR child. IF your baby’s ears be hurting during ascent and descent, use those fly earplugs so his or her ears won’t hurt.
NTA. Your money, you do what you want with it. There isn't a rulebook that says we have to consider how others may feel. We are each individuals and it's on ourselves to find another means to get away from something that we don't like that another human is doing. He's just another human putting his nose where it doesn't belong. He could have taken a private jet to spare himself the agony of children.
So where was the kid supposed to sit during the flight? If I had kids I would want them next to me on the plane especially this young. I would completely understand if she was screaming and running around like a wild child and parents doing nothing but sounds like she behaved very well and definitely better then this karen
She paid too much money to be harassed! WTF! That guy was clearly the a*****e
An appropriate response when he called you fat c**t would be to loudly proclaim so that everyone in first class hears it that he is a "needled**k peckerwood"
I don't really like the AITAs where it is obvious to the person posting they are not the a-hole.
She says that many of her family members told her they should have booked economy. So while it's obvious to any sane person that she was NTA, those family members apparently made her wonder if that's the case.
Load More Replies...I flew home from Scotland with a 5 week old and a 2 year old. Alone. My daughter cried the entire flight gripe water Tylenol nothing worked. I got off the plane went to the emergency room and they put her on soy milk problem solved. But I along with everyone else was exhausted when we landed in the states. After that thoug we flew all over and no more problems
Someone should have followed this pr ick home and stabbed him in the neck.
Children happen. They are part of life. We were all kids once. Wait til there's a REAL problem to complain, and even if a child is fussy......the inconvenience to ME is nothing compared to the stress on mom/dad. Try helping or offering something to help parents out or feel better. Pay it forward.
Sound like the guy was just mad that you boarded before he did and blamed the child, instead of seeing that your husband was disabled. You paid for the seats you have a right to them. I also blame the anti child stigma that society seems to be developing lately. Alot of people forget that one day, alot sooner than they think, they will be old. Too old to look after themselves or do all that they used to, then those kids will be the Compassionate adults who become the doctors, nursing home attendants, disease curing scientists, or just general good Samaritans who help them out. So instead of complaining about people with kids (especially well behaved ones) they should say thank you for putting in the endless hours and effort that all of society including them will one day benefit from.
NTA, they had as much right as he did, maybe slightly more as they bought three 1st class tickets. That guy though, he's a classic AH.
WTF? If you're in first class you obviously PAID for it. F*CK you child hater.
The man was an idiot. I would hate to pay for first class and have a screaming toddler beside me, but if they paid for the seat I would be stuck. And certainly a sweet quiet toddler is not a problem. Would continue to fly first class if you can afford it.
This veteran airline supervisor says if you paid for the seat, it's yours. Anyone who doesn't like it can GTFO the plane and take another flight if they think it's a big enough deal.
As for the whispered statement.... You should have stopped, turned around and called his fat a*s out. Nothing worse for a man that a woman looking them straight in they eye, repeating what they said and asking why! They shut up and scurry off like the rat they are.
Flying is a c**p shoot. You buy tickets to go somewhere. Who else is on the flight is out of the control of everyone. The man was a butt, karma will get him and MOM AND BABY enjoy 1st class!!
That guy is an a*****e. He's lucky you didn't punch him in the throat with your elbow as he snidely expressed those nasty comments, that only reveal he is the insecure a*****e. Lol. If you paid for the seats...they are yours. HE should be banned from 1st class flights forever. Lol!
If he's so worried about being annoyed, then he should buy headphones. If he can afford 1st class, he can afford headphones.
You are 100% NTA, he is! I don't have kids, but he has no right to say they can't fly just because they are kids. Adults can be just as disruptive - in fact it seems like he was far more disruptive then your kid. You paid for comfort as well, you certainly didn't pay all that money to be bothered by some entitled AH. In the end, paying for first class doesn't come with any guaruntees on the etiquette of other passengers.
I would of said well I didn't think they allowed animals in the plane without their owners , especially Jackass's! But your here!
Your child was well behaved and he still felt the need to complain and be vulgar anyway. The only AH here is the juvenile namecaller!
While I have nothing against first class for private individuals who are willing to pay the fares, I DO have a problem with “business” class, which is pretty much paid by the consumer/taxpayer since costs are passed on. Companies should only be allowed to book their employees on coach, with the individual choosing to upgrade at their own expense (not company credit card and/or expense account). The same goes for hotels, ground travel, and meal expenses (usually, but not always, limited to a per diem amount). Of course, this is not a good business model. Business model definition: make as much money for the uber wealthy at the expense of the working class. If companies actually paid from their own expense accounts (including taxes), our government would not be operating at a fiscal deficit AND the middle class would live comfortably again. Since it’s how they communicate, I have no problem with crying babies (not toddlers—that’s a parenting problem). F*ck the uber wealthy.
You can sit in 1st class if you have a kangaroo! If you pay the fare per the airline's ticket pricing the butthead complaining can pound sand, even if the child becomes disruptive. Life happens. The first class ticket price gets you a larger space/seat to sit in, complimentary booze & fancy food! PERIOD! Oh, & access to a toilet with shorter lines! You want to be more of a snob, consider a charter! Mom ponied up the dollars for 2 - 1st class seats! End of story! Bring noise-cancelling headphones next time.
You can only sit with a kangaroo if it is an emotional support animal. And, since some idiot determined that a peacock can be an emotional support animal, a kangaroo might be next. P.S.—I have nothing against kangaroos. In fact, while in the Australian Outback (Alice Springs), I had a kangaroo burger. The texture was kind of spongy and the taste wasn’t great, but doused in condiments, it was palatable.
Load More Replies...I would of smiled and say to you what a most beautiful baby of course baby's do cry if they are uncomfortable that's how they communicate sounds like the baby is way more intelligent than that guy first class isn't a man cave. And changing a diaper isn't that hard I changed many diapers if he loves God then he will know baby's are a gift from God
F that guy and the horse he rode in on with a spiked phallic implement.
My response would have been i paid for first class so I would be surrounded by rude aholes.
I can see where the other passenger would initially be upset seeing a child in 1st Class, but he should have dropped it when the child was well behaved. We've had the same thing happen in fine dining establishments. However, the person/s giving us the "stink eye" would usually stop by and compliment how well behaved my son was throughout dinner...and that he was excited for creamed spinach and broccoli.
There ought to be a child free flight option or child free section. Many people have expressed that they would pay more for it. It needs to become an actual option.
My wife and I flew yesterday. We were in first class when a couple with a young child sat in the two seats behind us. The child was older than two but the couple did not buy her a seat. The child was on the laps of the parents, kicked the backs of our seats, cried extensively and had a dirty diaper that we had to smell for the last hour of our flight. Having shared my uncomfortable flight details, if you buy the seat good for you and your child, especially if your child is well behaved. Unfortunately too many parents think it is so cute when their child misbehaves on planes and in restaurants.
I don’t think parents of misbehaved children think it’s cute. They are not intelligent enough to think, not socially aware enough to consider other passengers, and not morally staunch enough to raise a child with proper manners. The future looks bright!

I think her husband should fly first class since he's in a wheel chair, but maybe when her child is older they can switch from economy. I'm actually surprise the airline sold first class tickets for children and allowed them to board. I'm not against it, I'm just surprised.
I wish airline would make kid zone on all airplanes with a door to enclose the noise and kids so they don't run the whole plane. Would be win win for parents kids and other travelers

Load More Replies...If I did or said anything I was unsure of BP or any other website would be the last place I'd mention it.
I'm not sure why you're getting down voted when you're not wrong...people are grossly petty and childish.
Load More Replies...People do pay a lot of money to get first class and be away from crying children on the plane. She's lucky that her child flies good. Not many people know that or believe that.
Wish in one hand, s**t in the other…see which fills up first. I think there should be a law that prevents self-entitled, bigoted a******s to exist in this world. But my thoughts are incongruent with your existence.
Load More Replies...It would suck to have a free seat in 1st class and be near someone like you. Unfortunately, you don’t get it.
