This Ferret Determined To Show A Human Her Babies Is The Most Adorable Thing You’ll See Today
A video has been released showing a proud ferret mamma determined to demonstrate her babies to her human – even if that meant grabbing his finger with her mouth and dragging his hand towards her newborns. Now the Internet is going crazy, with some people even commenting this was so sweet, it almost made them cry.
Ferret babies are called kits. They’re usually only around 2-2.5 inches long and are born with soft baby fuzz instead of fur.
Kits are born blind, deaf and without teeth. Their eyes and ears don’t open until they’re 4-5 weeks old. Ferret mums know the exact number of their babies and can tell if one is missing – that’s how good their maternal instinct is.
In the first few weeks, babies are totally dependent on their mom, but that’s okay, because in this case they have the best – and the proudest – momma ferret in the world.

My cat gave birth for the first time in a box under a table in the dining room. She had 4 kittens. That night we were having dinner and she brought the kittens out, one by one, and put them in a line in front of us where we could see them. She then looked up at us with such an expression of pride, as if to say "look what I've done!"
I think it's more that she wants to keep everything she feels she needs to care about in one place. It's a hoarding/mothering instinct.
Some animal mothers do like showing off their babies and even know that you want to see them. At my grandparents house, there used to be a large woodpile and a stray mother cat had her kittens under it. I always petted and fed the kitty and she was very affectionate. Once the babies were old enough, I often tried to get them to come out from under the woodpile so I could pet them but they always retreated under the woodpile when I got close. One day they did that and I stood there trying to coax the kittens out and the mother cat stuck her head into the hole under the woodpile, made a soft, drawn-out MRRRRRREEEEOWWWW sound, pulled her head back out and the next thing I know, the kittens flooded out the hole and I was able to pick one up and pet it. It didn't even try to bite me. I'm certain that mama cat called her kittens out because she knew I wanted to pet them.
She's actually being amazingly gentle with him: she's perfectly capable of biting clean through to the bone if she takes a snit o.O
I didn't realize ferrets bonded with humans at this level. Cats and dogs understandable, but a ferret? Amazing!
That is truly amazing. When I read the caption I thought " RIGHT!" but there is absolutely no denying that she had a one track mind and had to have her owner there with her. Animals are amazing.
It is very cute but I thought one thing was a little bit odd. The first time the mother took the person's hand to the babies & the person picked up one of them the mother immediately took the baby back. Although, every time the person moved away from the babies the mother kept taking them by the finger & bringing them back to the babies. I guess, for whatever reason, the mother wanted the person right there with the babies but wasn't comfortable with them picking one up.

My thinking is she is saying, "Look, I got A LOT of babies. I'm gonna need more food & a break every now & then."
this is adorable, but rather than showing the babies, I think this is her mother instinct in overdrive, returning the hand to her nest, like she would a kit that had wandered. because when he picked one up, she grabbed it back and tucked them back neatly in. she's nesting, and including his hand in the equation. I've seen rats doing the same thing with adult cagemates, hands, and even their own tails. I think if she was showing them off, she'd be bringing them to him, a behaviour I've also seen in rats (putting the kits on their human friends lap, or if I remember right, in one video, down her bra) but either way, ferrets are adorable animals. we had them when I was growing up, and they're so cute and so much fun
That is so touching. She is so proud of her accomplishment and trusts her human so much that she wants both worlds to coexist <3

He likely already has touched her babies and so she's pulling his hand back in because it smells like one of her babies. Mothers focus strongly on the smells of their offspring.
A ferrets sense of smell can easily distinguish between a ferret and a human who smells a bit ferrety. They're very smart animals.
