Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

Some Words From Maisie Williams

Some Words From Maisie Williams

CheesyChips Report

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

When I was still in school, the boys in my class found it hilarious to open girls bras through their shirts when they walked in front of them (by pushing the hooks together). Sometimes even during class. Us girls thought it was annoying but somehow normal back then, which today I find very sad and disturbing.

Same for me. The boys had such a good laugh when we girls had to hurry to the restroom to get their bra back in order. The teachers, if they did anything at all, just said "Oh you..." - boys will be boys etc, huh? Glad that the younger generation are shocked and appalled when they hear about it, looks like things are changing for the better.

Even if girls don't cover their bra straps, snapping someone's bra should still be considered assault or sexual assault.

Snap my bra strap, and I snap the fingers you used to do it. In several places. I will only warn you this once. Do we have an understanding, asshole?

Yes! I argued this with a principal once. A boy was pulling the straps on my daughters bra so hard he broke one. I threatened to call my lawyer if it did not stop (you could not see her strap - he was grabbing it through her shirt). Thankfully that behavior is not tolerated any more.

It's not sexual, when I went to school you could see the straps, shoulders and sometimes even the bra through the shirt. No one was against it and no-one was harassed about it. It's normal

Based on the language alone, it seems like this would be common logic. Then again, there is nothing logical about misogyny.

If a guy were to ever bra snap me, or my crazy bestie, he would 110% get a shoe to the face. Doesn't matter how it gets there. Whether it's thrown, or kicked, or smashed onto his face. It's not appropriate to bra snap. Stop doing it.

I remember having to tie double knots in my halter tops in the late 70s because boys in school and on the street would come up behind us and untie them. It was considered boys just being boys and every girl I knew hated it but we could not complain.

I gotta ask. How old were you when you last had your bra snapped? Cause I know we have had it happen after high-school. I had mine snapped by a drunk guy at the bar after work right around the time I turned 30. He instantly got yelled at and kicked out. So that's cool.

When I was in middle school there was this one boy who practiced unsnapping a bra when doing the bra snap. I don't know how he practiced it but he was able to snap open our bras super quick and then run off laughing. Never got in trouble even when we came as a group to complain about him. "Boys will be boys. Just ignore him and he will stop." Yea. That didn't work. I started wearing sport bras and bras that snap in the front. He threatened me one day saying he will be able to snap the front too and that he was watching and waiting for the "perfect moment". Such fun times with big boobs in middle school.

I straight up punched one of the "jocks" in the face my junior year of high school for doing that very thing. I then stood there and (silently) dared him to do anything about it. I quickly had about 12 of the footballers stand up for me & he pretty much got his ass handed to him.

Any guy who snaps a woman's bra strap should be forced to wear braces (or I believe they are called suspenders in America) and every woman would be able to snap them and see how they like it.

It's NOT sexual assault to snap a bra strap, HOWEVER, snap a bra strap and expect to get your arm broken. And it will serve you right.

This happens too much and needs to stop. We are not just wives, parents, children etc. We are individuals and should have our achievements shared as individuals and not because we are related to someone else famous.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

LauraLikesWine Report

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

In the American South people will say "he's just being a good ol' boy!" and somehow that would excuse his heinous crimes. It just meant to me that he's "one of us" versus some evil person with slightly darker skin or who goes to a different church than we all do.

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.
