Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

Some Words From Maisie Williams

Some Words From Maisie Williams

CheesyChips Report

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

This happens too much and needs to stop. We are not just wives, parents, children etc. We are individuals and should have our achievements shared as individuals and not because we are related to someone else famous.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

They Are Probably Not Funny, Just A Terrible Person

LauraLikesWine Report

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

It reminds me of a joke. A guy goes to the doctor. "What's wrong?" the doctor asks. "I hurt all over my body" he says. "Show me exactly where it hurts" says the doctor. "Here, here, here, here and here". "Well, you should get that finger checked!!" hahaha

In the American South people will say "he's just being a good ol' boy!" and somehow that would excuse his heinous crimes. It just meant to me that he's "one of us" versus some evil person with slightly darker skin or who goes to a different church than we all do.

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.

How about we change the rules: any woman may legally mace any man/men who comes within 10m of her at night. Men can protect themselves by staying in well-lit areas where they can avoid women who might be agressive, staying inside at night, being escorted by another woman, crossing the street to avoid coming close to a woman, etc.

As if a woman’s behavior can change the outcome—-unless she’s able to incapacitate her attacker. Instead of teaching girls things like interpretive dance in PE classes, how about replacing it with self-defense?

i have no idea why anyone, woman or man, would look at another person and think "ah well, they didn't want me to get them a drink. time for plan b. let's go violate them, make them severely uncomfortable, cause them emotional harm, and potentially scar them for life"

teach your sons to respect and protect women. Teaching girls how to avoid being a potential rape victim is a cowardly way to put the blame on them.

Yebbut. Maybe we should be targeting males, and tell then to NOT let themselves be incited into committing a serious crime? Sort of like telling our sons to NOT shop lift or get involved in street brawls. After all we tell our children to not go into a paddock where there is a bull (unless you know him and are legally permitted to be there)

There's an article on Bored Panda giving examples of what to say by women who are being hassled by men. I get so annoyed with these articles because it normalises harrassment. Women shouldn't have to have a lie already prepared to put off anyone approaching her. She should be allowed to live her life and go about her life without being hassled by men, you know, like men get to do.

It's odd that men, many of whom claim to be the stronger sex, also claim that instead of controlling themselves that women should be controlled and covered up.

I don't think telling or not telling women this makes a shred of difference to the behaviour of predators. On the one hand, it shouldn't be up to the women to change their clothes, behaviour etc because of the actions of men. But that's an ideological proposition. In the real world you will always get sociopathic people who don't confirm to rules or respect others. And women who flaunt their bodies are more likely to be attacked by them because these men allow their biological responses rule their intellect. So, whilst women shouldn't have to do it, it's prudent that they accept that there are nasty men out there and they can reduce the chances of being attacked by not sticking their heads above the daisies. It's an unappealing and ugly truth of our species.

Yes it is. Telling women to change their behaviour to feel safe isn't helping. Because women's behaviour never was a problem in the first place. Men need to control their d***s and minds for anything to change.

I know this might come as a surprise but people, nurses have other bills to pay, many have children, and many are single mothers. Just because someone is a nurse doesn’t automatically equal wealthy.
