Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

Some Words From Maisie Williams

Some Words From Maisie Williams

CheesyChips Report

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

This happens too much and needs to stop. We are not just wives, parents, children etc. We are individuals and should have our achievements shared as individuals and not because we are related to someone else famous.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

They Are Probably Not Funny, Just A Terrible Person

LauraLikesWine Report

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

It reminds me of a joke. A guy goes to the doctor. "What's wrong?" the doctor asks. "I hurt all over my body" he says. "Show me exactly where it hurts" says the doctor. "Here, here, here, here and here". "Well, you should get that finger checked!!" hahaha

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

Irony: Jesuit Priest taught the course on that in my school. "Expressions of Faith and Doctrine in History", IIRC? ... The priest taught us that Jesus was Jewish, from Palestine, not a white guy from northern Europe; that letters from Paul showed women as leaders in the church, and each letter was specific to a situation, so using them for doctrine was dangerous; and slavery is always bad, b/c we are all one in God's love. And he counted "domestic enslavement", as he called it. Not that he'd let a woman be ordained, but ... at least he tried to show that what Jesus taught is not what Christians seem to "get".

Not just translated, but much of it was simply made up. Even the language used isn't how people spoke at the time, but cleverly chosen to sound profound to common people. Most people that quote the bible don't even realise that are over 200 recognised versions!

Hah! I'm just going to sit back and wait for people to get all up in arms about this truthful tidbit. And note it says TOXIC Christianity. Nothing wrong with the faith. The problem I think lies in the Church organizations that teaches their often incorrect interpretation of Jesus' teachings and that hands down antiquated misogynistic/homophobic etc traditions.

This is why I'm not religious and don't really like religion. Idc if someone is religious, but if they use their religion as a tool or reason for hatred against another, that's another matter entirely and I hate those people. (also, funnily enough this hatred using their religion goes against their religion, these nutjobs just like to pick and choose)

I agree. Religion is often run by people and it's people who twist it. I am a Christian and I've seen first hand people use God and the Bible for their own selfish means. It's despicable, especially if you claim to support that religion and your actions go against it, and even turn people against it.

There is a link between these issues but not direct. It's more like evil people are using bible to drive their own agenda. Cherry-picking words or sentences or interpreting things to their liking. Happens in other religions too. I'm an atheist.

Hello all- I am a Christian and here is my two cents. Firstly, I totally understand, I hate all of the things you’ve mentioned and I care deeply about the rape culture that is still encouraged today as well as the horrible discrimination in the name of Christianity (particularly against the LGBTQI+ community) but the bible says specifically to love others above yourself and that we are all equally as sinful as each other. The problem is, the extremists always scream the loudest.

Toxic Christians believe in all this quack about white supremacy and such, while true and good Christians do not. So please don't hate on all Christians. Thank you.

Honestly, Christian here. A big part of Christianity is about spreading the gospel and teachings people about Jesus. But I think the biggest hindrance to spreading a good message like "Jesus died for everyone, loves everyone and accepts everyone" are the Christians themselves. They constantly do selfish, terrible, awful things in the name of Jesus, they spout off their verses like they're oh so holier than thou, and it lights a deep fire of anger inside me. So yeah, let's talk about it, cause I've had enough of it.

Yes, yes we do. I am a person of faith, and belong to a world-wide evangelical church. Yet the conservative attitude that God created a beautiful diverse world for us to enjoy and appreciate, but Who is okay with the subjugation, denigration, and brutalization of anyone not male and white makes me absolutely despair. It's wonderful that there are 10,000+ species of birds, for example. But somehow lots of different kinds of humans, with all the diversity in viewpoints/cultures/faiths that implies is a problem? GAAAH.

I'd love for there to be more discussion that god himself would be a rapist or at the very least sexually harassed Mary. Didn't even go himself, but the angel never even asked Mary for her consent. She does agree, but it reads like the stereotypical "easier to agree and get it over with".

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.
