Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

sexism is to judge somebody base on gender standar and norms...feminist can make that mistake too, so being feminist doesn't automatically make you not sexist...and being not sexist doesn't make you a feminist...feminism is the struggle of women for social rights, whatever their view on gender is.

Doesn't treating someone differently biased on their gender make you sexist? Example, should I have higher expectations of a woman than a man? Is this feminist or just sexist?

I've been having conversations like this so many times. "You dont call yourself a feminist?" - no. "But you agree that we should have equal rights?" - yes. "That makes you a feminist!" - no it makes me normal.

Sometimes "Feminism" goes way too far though - there are women out there who call themselves feminist yet believe that women should be treated as superior to men, and men should be opressed etc. That isn't what feminism is about, it's about equality, not being better than men. I am very much a feminist in that regard, but sadly saying this lumps you in with the man hating rainbow haired tumblr weirdo's sometimes. :/

I feel like any group that has a title has several bad apples that ruin it for the rest of the group. It's hard to even be apart of a group that was started for good because people have seen bad come out of it by the few bad apples. It happens in every group. (I'm not disagreeing with you just bringing up an interesting point.)

This is EXACTLY how I've always felt! I always hated the word "feminist", because knowing men and women are equal should just go without saying. There should not be a label for that. The bad guys are the ones who need to be singled out and given a label, not the normal people.

I'm wondering. Does feminist mean you are someone who believes in equality or one who fights for equality? Cause "normal" could mean you are neutral on the subject or that you think men and woman are equal but don't fight for it, and can you be a feminist if your not fighting for equality? Side note, the word "normal" also means different things to different people. A sexist could call themselves "normal". So I kind of feel like we still need the term feminist. I appreciate her point though!

No they want the same rights for women as men For example, if men had periods there would not be a single hesitation in prescribing them birth control or letting them have days off work for cramps….. Which is the exact opposite for women. Feminists seek better rights for women so there can be equality between the sexes

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.
