Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

Some Words From Maisie Williams

Some Words From Maisie Williams

CheesyChips Report

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

This happens too much and needs to stop. We are not just wives, parents, children etc. We are individuals and should have our achievements shared as individuals and not because we are related to someone else famous.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

They Are Probably Not Funny, Just A Terrible Person

LauraLikesWine Report

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

It reminds me of a joke. A guy goes to the doctor. "What's wrong?" the doctor asks. "I hurt all over my body" he says. "Show me exactly where it hurts" says the doctor. "Here, here, here, here and here". "Well, you should get that finger checked!!" hahaha

In the American South people will say "he's just being a good ol' boy!" and somehow that would excuse his heinous crimes. It just meant to me that he's "one of us" versus some evil person with slightly darker skin or who goes to a different church than we all do.

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

Worse, they’ll assume the man owns the restaurant and the woman is the hostess. Like a woman can’t own a business.

Absolutely and unequivocally true! My wife was a line cook for over 20 years. A damn good one at that. And it really surprised me how much of a boy's club the kitchen was. She had to prove herself worthy over and over.

I think that people would assume the woman would serve because women only cook for "free" as in the home. Servers are horribly paid and count on tips. They are almost encouraged to be as pretty and flirty as possible to"earn" that tip.

The title of professional chef has been male dominated forever. Celebrity chef too. The profession is making great strides but there's still a long way to go for equality. There and everywhere.

I’m a female chef; figured this out early on. Men are genuinely surprised a woman can cook, then turn around & say, “but not as good as my moms”.. aside from religion, being a chef is one of those careers that is steeped in misogyny so thick it would be hilarious if it weren’t so painful.

Definitely. I had people walk into my office assuming I was a secretary. I am an engineer with 2 Master's degrees. The closest thing to a secretary was, in fact, male.

Is it wrong that I pictured the young man as a waiter and the woman as the front of house/Concierge? I only go to a few restaurants maybe 2-3 times a year and that's what I always see. You never really see kitchen staff so I never really thought about it.

This kind of idea applies to a lot of fields. Take IT for instance. A woman on a team of men is frequently assumed to be a secretary, or doing the easiest work, while the men are getting in to the nitty gritty. (Yes, I’m speaking from experience.)

So.... you believe that ANY "stranger," will assume the roles. Then babble gibberish about old "woman's place" and "in the kitchen" tropes that nobody's actually believed in for over a decade at least. And conclude with "being paid means servitude," but trying to word it in a way that makes the woman sound like a slave? Just wanted to make sure I got that all correctly. LOL you damn libtards are killing real classic feminism, and all it achieved.

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.

I know this might come as a surprise but people, nurses have other bills to pay, many have children, and many are single mothers. Just because someone is a nurse doesn’t automatically equal wealthy.
