Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

Anything. If a woman/gay person/trans person/POC drives badly, works badly, is rude in a shop, etc etc etc then they represent every single person within that group. If a straight, white, man does then he is personally a twat, and that is all.

Michael Beswick

You are right, people do behave like this although it is part of human nature. People are instinctively tribal, so if a stranger is identified as being from the same group (even if that is gender, sexuality, race etc), they will be seem more as an individual; and so the opposite is true. In our past this bavour would have served as a survival trait, as strangers could be a threat and would naturally be treated with hostility. The thing is we don't have to behave that way, as we are not mindless animals as we have conscious control over our instincts.

I've seen similar sort of arguments about how it's "okay" for cops to shoot black men during traffic stops. Because "statistically black men commit more violent crimes". Okay let's say that's true (who actually knows if they do or if they just get accused of them more often, etc?), and white men statistically commit a tiny bit fewer violent crimes -- then it must be okay for police to shoot them as well. It in fact must be okay for the police to shoot anyone at any time at their whim because every category of people includes a percentage who commit violent crimes.

Feminists constantly look for ways to make themselves the victim when they're really being the true aggressive and unreasonable and insensitive assholes. One doesn't have to support rape or assault to believe a pissed off ex shouldn't be able to make a call any time she wants with a claim just to see you rot in jail for years because her feelings were hurt. This happens all the time to men who have been COMPLETELY on board with consent, men who don't physically attack women, just because the woman wanted revenge for calling her a "bitch" one time during a heated argument where much worse things were said back anyway. In all my years hearing the stories and talking to the victims, I've never once heard a girl say "He told the police I did something I didn't and now here I am." Yet here you idiots are pretending there's no difference between someone else forcing you to go to jail, and mentally creating a prison for yourself that can't be escaped without blaming a man for every hardship.

Brittania Kelli
Community Member

Unfortunately women don't have to look to make themselves victims as 97% have been sexually harassed and 1 in 4 are seriously sexually assaulted. Women are more likely to suffer from domestic abuse, paid less than their male counterparts, raped as a tool of warfare, mutilated by Female Genital Mutilation, married off underage because their family needs does or goats, less likely to be fully educated, murdered for honour, told what to do with their bodies. And then after all that, women then work hard to lift themselves and others up by setting up organisations dealing with all these issues and a handful of blokes jump in screaming "that's sexist! What about the men?" We don't have to create mental prisons, men give us real ones, but Not ALL men.

Accusations Ruin A Man's Life

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

The Link Between Guns, Police And Violence Against Women In America

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.
