Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

Some Words From Maisie Williams

Some Words From Maisie Williams

CheesyChips Report

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

My wife never took my last name because she is a proud French Canadienne and she wants to flaunt that s**t. Not that it matters but she has my full and complete support.

My husband and I are from Quebec and married there. So I let my husband keep his maiden name.

You won't unless you ask, but the name they present themselves with is the name we will know and she want her maiden name to get the credit.

I made sure my maiden name, which is now my middle name, was plainly printed on my diplomas, and announced at graduation (Eastern European and hard to pronounce and spell, had to explain it for forty years, married name just makes life easier).

My maiden name is now my middle name. I hated my original middle name. My maiden name is also Eastern European and not pronounced the way it’s spelled. My married name is pronounced the way it’s spelled. Sooo much easier.

Then what would your kids last name be? Both? Then when they get married and have kids should they use all those last names too? You're going to end up with people having 10 last names at some point. Just to protect your fragile feminist pride? It has to end at some point.

You can do that? In my country, if you take your wife‘s or husband‘s name, that is legally your new name and you are not allowed to just switch back to the old one spontaneously.

Perfect! I never changed my name because I'm known by it in the art community. The whole idea of changing names is so antiquated. It made sense when women did not have any rights or could not own property - the last name made them part of their husband's family. But we live in the 21st century - come on already!

When I married, I took my husband's name. I added my maiden name as my second middle name. (I had a son that still had that name.) Unbeknownst to me until after the wedding, my husband added my maiden name as HIS second middle name, also. That was pretty incredible. Unfortunately, that was where the joy ended. (We divorced 4 years later, but I have to give it to him on that one!)

I changed my last name to my hubby's coz I like his better than mine. Also so we had the same last name as the kids, I didn't want to hyphenate our names together.

It used to be a given that a professional kept her name in her profession. We all knew Lucille Ball was married to Desi, but she remained Lucille Ball. Elizabeth Taylor? Who could have kept up with all her married names? Name any star of the past who failed to stay who she was no matter how many marriges. I thought it beyond tacky when Farrah Faucet added Majors to her name. I am disgusted with a certtain doctor changing her name because she married. Doctors earn their licence in their own name . It should stay that way.

That should be the woman's choice. I wanted my hubby's last name coz 1. I like it better than my maiden name and 2. So myself, hubby and kids all had the same last name.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

This happens too much and needs to stop. We are not just wives, parents, children etc. We are individuals and should have our achievements shared as individuals and not because we are related to someone else famous.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.
