Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

Some Words From Maisie Williams

Some Words From Maisie Williams

CheesyChips Report

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

I wonder if they think, "that woman would look much better if they only did this and that" and they blurt it out, genuinely thinking they're being kind and supportive and helpful. Not realising the ego centricity of how they're thinking. There have been a few studies in the difference in dealing with problems between men and women. Women want understanding, men want to try to fix the problem for them. It's enough to spark all kinds of unintended ill will. Although there are also enough men who enjoy belittling and gaslighting women, too. Sometimes it's also through poor education from their childhood, picking up bad habits from their parents. A generational thing. Generational values take a little longer to change.

Plus it's totally undemocratic and unscientific to for one person to reach a conclusion based on a sampling of one. He needs to go from one passenger to another and ask each for their opinion. He will then have to compile the responses, including "Natural", "A little makeup", "It depends", "Oh f**k off, you perv", and "You woke me up for this s**t?!"

That's right up there with some random stranger on the trolley telling me I'd be so much prettier if I smiled - as I'm sitting there minding my own f*****g business reading a book. HUH really? You'd appear so much more intelligent if you kept your f*****g mouth shut.

I once had a similar experience: A guy in my previous workplace said to me, "Who are you trying to impress?" when I touched up my makeup after lunch break. I promptly said, "Uh, myself?", and "Definitely not you, dude" silently. I wished I had said the latter out loud too. Funny how there are men out there who still think we put on our makeup for their sake *roll eyes*

Guess what Amy. If you had sat on the train and left your make up alone, NOBODY would have commented.| If you are really SO very worries about showing your naked face in public, then go to the nearest women's wash room and apply it there. It would annoy the heck out of me, but it is acceptable there. (Which is why I avoid them as much as possible.)

GUESS WHAT! I dislike heavy make up on anybody! Web have beautiful faces, Why pain our selves to look like shop window mannikins?? Most women look far more beautifiul without make-up on. If used it sould, be ONLY to cover-up blemishes and achieve a natural look. For a start -- it stinks.] It is also unhealthy and hot as it blocks your pores. Then it should NEVER be put on in public! Get real, it is quite quite obnoxious. Other people don't want to smell you stink or breathe up your irritating dust. I cannot watch Murdocrk because of his terribly make up - mascara forsooth. PS although I did wear lipstick in he 1960s, I gave it up because it made my lips peels, tasted horrible and certainly did not enhance my facial features. I have lives make-up leas and cosmetic less since then No perfumes, just cleanliness.

Hm... I think it's funny that everybody always thinks of the worst possibility in the first place. Maybe he wanted to compliment her and meant something like "You look fine without makeup, girl." Sometimes I think everybody is lurking like vultures, just waiting for the next thing to be upset about so they can go completely NUTS. Also, Devon Lonergan has a point. According to feminists, we'd better go extinct before daring to talk to a woman. How rude we are!

No, he is commenting on how he would like the way she looks if she didn't wear makeup. He's making it about himself and his preferences, without taking her feelings and desires into account. It is creepy and sexist.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

They Are Probably Not Funny, Just A Terrible Person

LauraLikesWine Report

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.
