A Woman Is Posting Feminist Messages Written On Period Pads All Over Her City

Feminism is always worth talking about, but it’s hard to grab people’s attention. Elonë, a woman in Karsruhe, Germany, solved this problem by using a controversial medium – period pads – to drive home her message about gender equality and the elimination of rape culture. She chose International Women’s Day (March 8th) as the perfect day to reveal her message.

She has already attracted the attention of thousands of supporters and critics alike from around the world, including people who want to apply her project in their own cities as well. Some of her most popular photos with the pads have been shared thousands of times. She says she was inspired to create the series by a tweet that read “imagine if men were as disgusted with rape as they are with periods.”

Despite the critics that have bombarded her with messages, she insists that her message is one of “equality, not men hate.” And indeed, her messages are so popular and shareable because they are so simple and clear – now is the time to stop rape culture, victim-blaming and gender inequality.

Elonë’s message is clear – it’s time to stop rape culture

“Feminism means equality, not men hate”

Her messages address serious issues like rape culture, victim blaming and the objectification of women

Some are offended by her use of period pads, but that just means her message is spreading

Supporters from all over the world have expressed their desire to emulate her project in their own cities

You can't reach gender equality drawing a line between 'us' and 'they', and then generalize. This way you divide genders. Equality is unity.

How many men commit rape, molestation, or sexual harassment? Answer: LOTS. And a great deal of it is perpetrated on family members, co-workers or friends. How many get away with it? MOST. Why? Because "boys will be boys". Because the power/sex thrill is intoxicating. Because they can. Because women are expected to be meek, and reviled when they are not. Now. How many men are very uncomfortable going to the store to pick up period supplies? Less than in previous years, but still a high majority. You do the math, without claiming you are the exception that proves the rule. And yes, I know how unscientific this is, but I also know a great many people, from all walks of life, and across 59 years of life, from one side of this country to the other.

Not sure about German laws, but she seems to be grouping all men together. I'm not sure where this is coming from really. On average, the punishment for rape in the United States is about a decade in prison for ONE count. Now who makes the laws? Predominately men, which means that men are the ones who decided on this punishment for rape. So I fail to see where men are somehow "ok" with rape. We just want proof before someone's life is ruined. We want more than just someone's good word that they're guilty.

Men don't congratulate rapists, no one celebrates rape, rape isn't legal and rapists often get killed in prison and by mobs. There's no a rape culture but a victimization one. She's free to stick misandrist c**p on the street and still feel oppressed. She says feminism is not about hating men but she states that MEN don't feel disgisted by rape. Are all feminists that stupid? What if a man went sticking condoms with phrases like "shared custody", "yes means yes" or "not all men are your ex boyfriends"? Oooh, misogyiiii!!

Lena Dunham raped her little sister and falsely accused a "Republican man" of raping her for political gain. Yet she's the campaign adviser for Hillary Clinton to get more female votes. Only when women stop following Lena will I take rape accusations seriously. And you man-hating FemiNazi's in the comments can suck my balls. Feminism isn't about equality. Feminism is about empowering women - which is no longer needed. And even when women were fighting for the right to vote in 1920, they weren't fighting for the right to be drafted and die in war - a "male privilege" women have never had. Equality LOL shut the f**k up. Women have more rights than men now. Just look at our Judicial System. Men get 16x harsher sentences for similar crimes. We all know this is true.

Of course, all men aren't disgusted by rape. That must have slipped my mind when I last read about a rape in the newspaper, and was disgusted. I'll make up for it by having a special rape celebration party the next time I read about a rape. Must not be disgusted by rape. Must adhere to feminists generalisation of how men act.

Of course most adult men -- especially those who have lived with women for any length of time at all -- don't really give a s**t about periods and certainly aren't disgusted by them, because they are just a part of life. Of course, admitting this truth would disrupt her anti-male sexist b******t message, so she has to pretend that the truth is otherwise.

Two hypotheticals: A rapist gets stabbed when attempting to rape someone. A woman gets stabbed for being on her period. How would people feel about each scenario? I'm pretty sure this scenario would show how much more people are disgusted by rape than by periods...

Equality? Men don't plaster sanitary towels all over cities. 'If only men were as disgusted with rape...' I know of no man who ISN'T disgusted by rape; the woman posting these seems to have forgotten that men can be raped, too. As for being disgusted by periods...it's a natural thing, but I don't particularly want to see anyone's blood regardless of where it came from.

Imagine if men were as comfortable exposing women that raped them like women are quick to assume men are the only ones that rape; fitting right into negative gender stereotyping. Also...the law is basically innocent until proven guilty, so when a woman is raped they get angry because it has to be proven, but if a man were to, he can't even prosecute because he isn't a man for being raped in the first place, he's a f*g, a pussy, right? Feminism needs to enrter a new, non-white, non-privileged, non-bored housewife age called humanism. Equality is the game, and apparently hate and bigotry seem to be the method of play.

Seems like a great project - but I’m concerned about the first message (“imagine if men were as disgusted with rape as they are with periods.”) There's good research to show that people often behave the way they *believe* most people behave. Social psychologists use this information to help promote the incidence of desirable behaviours in a population. For instance, a group of children can be encouraged to bully less, simply by teaching them that bullying is strange and uncommon - that it's a social abnormality. Unfortunately, there's similar research showing that despite their best intentions, public service announcements that that depict an *undesired* behaviour to be more common than it actually is, typically increase the incidence of that undesired behaviour. This first pantyliner states that the majority of men feel a certain way. Despite the author’s best intentions, this could easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If men were as disgusted by periods as they are with rape, male police would arrest women for having them. Then male lawyers would prosecute them for it. Then male judges would sentence them for it. Then male prisoners would assault them in jail for it. Then male politicians would make a special registry for them when they got out of jail. Male administrators would make laws that allowed "bleeders" to be expelled from university campus for a mere preponderance of evidence. And any accusation of being a "bleeder" would cause men to become violent towards that person, and in male society, being called "a bleeder" would be one of the most charged insults you could call somebody. Rape culture was originally used to describe the accepted and encouraged rape of men in prison. Of course it got co-opted. The concept of rape being a culture is ridiculous, and it only makes sense to people who view themselves as victims. No man high-fives another for rape.

Implying that all men are rapist, is not helping the situation or the discussion :( Flippning the example: Imagine if women were as digusted with killing their husband as they are with hairy spiders. I think it is very important that the case of womens rights doesn't become a situation of men vs women. I think we should be able to acknowledge the problems without blaming an entire gender. Blame companies, individuals, law or law makers who mess up, but generalizing isn't smart. Just like you shouldn't blame entire ethnic groups, just because they statistically do more of X

"Imagine if men were as disgusted with rape as they were with periods?" This sentence really upsets me. I don't think we realize what kind of message we're programming into men's minds. I've had a serious conversation with someone very close to me who was afraid to be by women or to even look women in the eye because he felt and I quote "I'm afraid that they'll look at me and wonder if I'm a rapist". This disgusts me, men shouldn't have to fear being labelled like this. I wish that when we're speaking of situations of this nature that we can refer to these people as "rapists" because at the end of the day rapists are sick individuals who should not be given a label anything other than what they are. Let's put all assumptions aside.

First off she never said "All men are rapists", nor did she say "Women cannot rape". Instead of nitpicking an article, go out and do something for the individuals who are raped, cannot speak up or get justice, or get victim blamed..
