People Are Explaining Why “Female Only” Parking Spaces Exist After This Guy Points Out It’s Not Equal
123Kviews
As society progresses people are challenged to take a look at themselves and their behavior. Men are being told that their time is up and that once accepted norms will no longer be accepted. But this quest for gender equality is more than just personal actions and is beginning to include laws, policies and yes even workplace changes. Recently, one Reddit user was faced with one of these developments at his company and something didn’t feel right about it so he did the only logical thing he could think of – ask the internet.

User AspiringProducer19 describes himself as an “approx 22.5 year old man” who had recently received a great job as a corporate level administrator. Two months into his job, the employee stated he had no complaints until one day he came across a sign in the parking lot that read “female employee parking space only!” The user then prefaced his question by stating: “let me clarify I am not “Irate” or “fuming” about it, but I dont really buy into the whole chivalry, white knighting culture that the men of previous generations upheld fedora intensifies.”
The post was published in the Reddit group r/AmItheAssshole, “A catharsis for the frustrated moral philosopher in all of us, and a place to finally find out if you were wrong in an argument that’s been bothering you.”
“So theres not too much to say, I guess I’m more curious in others opinions on this. I am an approx 22.5 year old man, I recently snagged a really really good job. I work as a corporate level administrator in the trucking industry. It’s been a pretty sweet gig so far and have no complaints as of yet (2 months in). I would also like to preface the following with saying that I work with a very diverse staff of coworkers who are all as professional as they can be, rarely is it that someone cant pull their own weight.
About a week ago I was walking through the parking lot to my car after the end of the day, and I was looking at the sunset through the chain link fence. As my eyes darted around i happened to notice a pink metal plate bolted onto the fence, I thought to myself “woah, what’s that and how did i not notice it before?” So i started reading it and I was immediately greeted with slight disappointment. Basically, it read as follows “FEMALE EMPLOYEE PARKING SPACE ONLY!” with a large symbol in the middle of the sign which is also seen on women’s public bathrooms.
Now, let me clarify I am not “Irate” or “fuming” about it, but I dont really buy into the whole chivalry, white knighting culture that the men of previous generations upheld fedora intensifies. I even asked my fiance when I got home, just to get a female insight on it. She said she thought it was stupid. I guess I’m just coming from the territory of you can show that your a diverse company dedicated to equality, without making tedious or unimportant decisions like special parking. Just my two cents on it though.”
People in the comments had questions for the poster before answering
But for others, these signs were not a new phenomenon to them and were seen as useful
Female only spaces are an initiative that has spanned from the U.S to Europe to China and caused much debate. While some believe they are unnecessary and sexist, others see it as a way to protect women from potentially dangerous situations. While the U.S Department of Justice states that there is nothing inherently dangerous about parking lots, isolation is a key factor to the possibility of sexual assault. They also add that: “Approximately two-thirds of rapes/sexual assaults occurred at night — 6 p.m. to 6 a.m,” which is around the time many employees are leaving work.

As a woman I am very happy with these precautions. It really is about safety, and has nothing to do with equality or feminism.
Kolvanov, go back to your cave.

so, you do not see a problem with the fact that this gives less safety to men? While statistics say that men actually get mugged MORE ? Yay....
Troll.

@Michal - when you bring more logic and evidence on this site to a feminine and emotional topic (for women), then you're automatically labelled 'troll' to dismiss addressing your argument. Also, OP, I thought men and women were the same.
Doesn't even understand that equality doesn't mean that men and women are the same. Oh dear.

Wrong- if men and women are equal or should be treated equally, then women don't require special treatment- this is hypocritical in the extreme and makes a mockery of feminist ideals.
The special treatment women receive is the violence they’re being subjected to by misogynists.

understanding the difference between women and men is the right thing. Has nothing to do with inferiority of either but with complementing each other. Women just need to stop worrying too much they are underestimated, the right men are alert and doing their best. I actually upvoted you from -1 to 0 )))
This isn’t about recognising inherent difference, it’s about recognising that women are being bullied and attacked so much in a deeply unequal society that they are under threat getting to and from their cars.

I downvoted you from 1 to 0 lol. Aww yeah.

The Dutches is right. Women just need special treatment even though everyone knows they're just like the men. Wait....
You are seriously jealous of the fact that women are targetted for sexist violence on such a scale that they fear for their lives in carparks? If you care about equality, do something about that.
Dear J.S. Go back to 9GAG.

Until the "Transwomen" with a 10' cock starts parking there and claims he's a real women lol.
Wow, 10 feet, huh?
It is very logical to try to protect your employees, specially if there had complaints about the parking. Yes, ideally we should all have equal rules and this should not be necessary, I agree with the people saying that. But ideally women should not have a good reason to be afraid while walking at night. It seems a reasonable measure until our society changes in that aspect.

women are not reasonable, usually. Subjective "feelings" are not reason.
Troll.
Right, none of your feelings have been involved in anything you're posting.
I can't say I have a particularly strong opinion on this because I've never seen it before, but I do want to point out how polite pretty much everyone was (I didn't read all the comments so sorry if I'm wrong). You don't see that a lot in these types of arguments and I think it makes their point of veiws' a lot more valid.
This reminds me of able-bodied people yelling at disabled/chronically ill people for using the disabled parking spaces JUST BECAUSE they don't have a wheelchair. Stfu bro, you don't know everything.
Could have just called it female safety parking and no one would have second guessed it. Well.. maybe just unfuckable morons.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
oh, you second guessed it?
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
You know the sexual desirability and intelligence of the men who'd second guess it? That's impressive.
Not impressive, obvious. Self-pitying whiners, who are too stupid to realise why women might need safer parking spaces and even resent women for it, who then bleat on showing their inability to understand what equality really means doesn't make them sound remotely like they would be a kind and caring partner. They have made themselves sound completely unfuckable and moronic.
No Matter what the 3rd-wav'ers say, women are definitely the more vulnerable sex. Our country is the rape capital of the world and women are targeted. I would 10,000% support these signs for all the right reasons. Yes, men DO NOT THINK LIKE WOMEN in the "saftey" sense as noted in the comments above.
which country?
Sometimes you have to treat someone differently so that they have an equal chance of something. Children using wheelchairs use lifts rather than stairs to get on a bus and go to school. Someone short may need a stepping stool to reach a cabinet, so that the tall people in the kitchen aren’t the only ones who can get a snack. If it’s a safety precaution, to help protect women so they are not as likely to be raped, alrighty. I can see both pros and cons to this. I see a lot of discourse in the comments about men being more likely to be mugged, which is horrible, but rape (what I feel is the main reason behind the sign) and muggings are not the same thing. Both are violent acts, but not entirely the same. Perhaps we should make all areas more brightly lit to help prevent muggings as well. Often, equality means being seen as worth as much as another. Not being able to just deck a woman in the face, or kick a man in the balls, but realizing that both are just as bad, regardless of gender.
If anyone wishes to discuss, try to keep a civil attitude. It’s difficult to make a point seem valid if the one presenting it is howling like a rabid animal. I try to look at both sides, and I’ll take things into consideration if that thing isn’t blaring and insulting.
I'm with you, Reilly Beryll. I can see both sides. I've worked in places where I had to walk around a city block to get to my car, or I could walk down the alley and save time (in some areas the street is no safer than the alley). I would have really appreciated a designated parking space closer to the office. I can see how some people would be offended by this, though. For everyone saying, "But I thought women were supposed to be equal?": We are equal, but we are not the same. You probably shouldn't expect me to do any heavy lifting because that is not my strong point, but there are plenty of things that I do better than my male co-workers. How about we focus on each other's strengths and show some understanding for each other's weaknesses?
Possible dumb queston alert but what is a 'corporate level administrator'? I know what an administrator is. I know what corporates are. I'm just not sure what exactly this person is trying to say with this.
An administrator is basically an organizer for an office. Depending on the company, an administrator may do secretarial work in addition to organizing, orchestrating and planning. I would imagine that a "corporate level administrator" would be an administrator who holds a position higher up in the company. At the corporate level they may be responsible for organizing affairs inside and outside the company. I've done those duties, but I didn't have that title.
Close to the exit, extra lighting, video surveillance. Isn't it sad we need to do this instead of just not raping people? And then this fucktard pretends to not understand the reasoning?
Men aren't taught to think about safety at every turn. I truly believe he didn't realize. Besides, I read the original thread and as soon as people pointed it out he thanked them for pointing it out and agreed that that was probably the reason.

Criminals don't care about your posts. And rapists know they are breaking the law.
If men don't like this, then maybe they should stop assaulting women like the cowards they are? Fair?

Listen there, White Knight, I'm quite sure that the men who don't like this aren't disliking it on the grounds that it makes them harder to rape women *rolls eyes*. Please update us if your comment did in fact get you laid like you hoped it would.
No it’s not equal, but neither is misogynist violence.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
There's plenty of misandrist violence and abuse too. Not to mention that sign translates to "criminals prey here".
That is equally wrong but tends NOT to be caused by women lurking in dark corners ready to grab a man and rape him. How sad that some men begrudge a small number of parking spaces to a few women who feel vulnerable. Not all women would make use of these spaces. Men naturally have the greater strength and men tend to be the ones who prey on others. Men are also the ones creating such a big fuss here 'oh, it isn't fair' Pathetic. It isn't inequality to take into account that there is a section of society at greater risk in these scenarios. You go ahead though and show what a lot of begrudging bastards you all are.
I understand why the company would do this, but on the otherhand, how low did we go that women need this kind of protection. The most obvious solution is to just stop harassing/mugging people (women and men)! I am tired to have to live with the fact that I always have to keep my guard up wherever I go, especially at night. So people: please raise your children as respectful, gentle and loving souls.
We have a multi-storey car park locally with a designated womenonly floor with extra lighting. This was put in place over 20 years ago after an attempted abduction. The woman was a colleague of my husband’s who escaped because another car arrived.
Where do these exist ?
In many countries.
It sounds like this guy is in the US but they exist in the U.K. too.
I’m in Ohio and in the winter it’s dark by 5pm and you would be surprised how many men don’t offer to walk to your car, or would be on their cell and walk past you even though it was ‘company policy’ to do so. It was a bad neighborhood and parking was across a busy 4 lane rod. The parking was not very well lit. It was terrifying, especially when there’s homeless people who were everywhere. Glad I got out of there. Alive.
Fine. To make it equal, men should be sexually assaulted the same amount as women, then men can get "men only" parking. Sound equal enough for you dude?
Men are at a much higher risk (2x-3x) to experience violence on the open street. Sounds equal enough for you dude?
Absolutely right Si. Violence on men, instigated mostly by men. Go figure.
That’s because they’re much more likely to get involved in public disturbances like fights, brawls, riots, gangs. Not because they’re more likely to be randomly targetted for hammer attacks, rapes, abductions, torture, murder, etc.
Victim blaming much, Si?
Research shows that 1 in 6 men in the United States are sexually assaulted/raped at some point in their lives... And this is probably a low estimate, since it doesn’t include non-contact experiences, which can also have lasting negative effects. Women are approximately 1 in 5... not exactly a giant difference.
That's only one country's figures though. The rest of the world is going to have a range of variances across the stats (also - how trustworthy are stats and the people collecting, and interpreting them). Another factor is where do the assaults/rapes take place - are men and women equally attacked outside the home? In dark lonely corners of towns? Do statistics help this issue? Women still tend to be more physically vulnerable.
Dear R. could you give a link to your researches. Thanks.
@Dilly: Men are at a much higher risk of being attacked outside. Statistics are available. Also, violence against men is notoriously underreported.

@Palo Aalto here's one site that shares numerous studies findings in the USA https://1in6.org/get-information/the-1-in-6-statistic/
At least he was curious and not ranting angrily.
So sad how posts like this bring out all the assholes.
Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Discrimination against males...
Can we get mens reserved parking spots way in the back in the darker remote areas of the parking lot? Just so we don't feel left out.
Aw, that's a bit much - what about parking in a badly lit gang controlled estate? 😜
While the speculations are interesting and some sound reasonable, I am wondering why you don't just ask?
Being cynic, I thought at first that men think that women can't park and that they would protect their cars. That was before I read the comments.
Shocking how normalised sexist violence is in society. Can you imagine special parking spaces to prevent attacks on any other targetted group (such as an ethnic minority)? Would society tolerate a level of violence against a group of people that was so bad this was necessary? Or would they treat it like the national emergency it is?
I don't see it as normalization, but rather an added security measure. Assaults will never go away, but we can at least try to minimize the risk.
The joke is that men are at a much higher risk of experiencing violence in public settings. Can you imagime a society which just ignores that?
No, men are much more likely to be *involved* in violence in public settings, which is a completely different thing. The men who attack women in public attack them because they are women, they will walk right past men and choose a woman to brutalise.

Si. No, men are a lot more likely to be the target of random violence in public settings. That's just a fact.

National emergency? That's a bit much. Not every security precaution gets put in place because of emergencies. Sometimes it's forward thinking pragmatism.
Didn't read the whole thing. Was there an official company answer?
He didn’t ask his employer, just his girlfriend
Maybe the men were tired of all the door dings and getting backed into so they moved the women over there.
That last comment was so off. It doesn't make him mature to ask the internet. It would have made him mature if he actually asked someone at his place of employment why it was there instead of strangers on the internet. He should put on his big boy pants and ask someone there who actually knows.
Men and Women should be treated equally according to feminists and politically correct cucks, apart from when they decide women deserve special treatment because we certainly aren't even close to equal in so, so many ways. Sigh...

That sign tells the stalker, murderer, rapist, abductor EXACTLY where to look.
There is that but, theoretically, aren't they meant to be in brighter, busier zones so that a woman isn't getting in her car in some dark, quiet corner?

According to the US Department of Justice ''from 1995 to 2010, the estimated annual rate of female rape or sexual assault declined 58%, from 5.0 victimizations per 1,000 females age 12 or older to 2.1 per 1,000.'' The link https://journalistsresource.org/studies/government/criminal-justice/female-victims-sexual-violence-1994-2010/
estimated means estimated. As in 90% of women do not report sexual assaults
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
So you are equally dismissive of statistics that support your side of the argument? Didn't think so. Also, did women get together and decide to just report less? Don't think so. Just because you want something to be true doesn't mean it is.
Just stats from one country as well - this is a global issue.
I have no idea how this alters the figures but REPORTED rape. 2010 is also nearly a decade ago so we have no idea what this means today.
Stated estimated becuase they probably had to estimate because there will be variations in how some assaults are labelled.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
They analized the rape data over those years. I have no idea why they wrote estimated.
I see people are offended by data.
Data can be manipulated and misrepresented. In one country I read about crime going down when it turned out to be the police leaving out a load of figures because the methods of collating the information changed. Lies, damned lies and statistics. Also, to be truly useful this should be comparative with the same crime against men. Seeing as these few spaces being prioritised for women are depriving men.
The vast majority of people think with their fee-fee's these days. Why be bothered with such things as facts? SMH.
Data may be not 100% accurate, but it's still the best thing that we have. As opposed to people's feelings, which are much worse than any data we have.

Again with the Female Only. Why is there a female bathrooms only and then next to it says transgender bathroom
Okay, maybe you're pretty young but you don't have to grow up to be a prat. If you want to get along with the other 50% of the population try being open minded. How do you really think it might feel to be the ones preyed on by society? Ignore those quoting stats about men being most likely to get injured - that's because of men fighting men in brawls or gang related violence. It skews the figures. This is about women being targeted by sick men who just want to hurt them, to sexually assault them. Do you not want your mother to be assaulted in a dark car park? Do you have a sister? You might in the future have a daughter. Would you not want her to be safer? To make society equal - in this instance equally safe from attack in a car park - sometimes you have to take greater measures for part of that society. Why there are problems with labelling on public loos I have no idea and that's irrelevant to THIS discussion.
Try thinking about it a bit more. Who is most at risk?

I'd have to see the actual location and have a better understanding of the situation before passing judgement. My initial reaction is that it's fucking ridiculous, but maybe it was put up for a good reason. Not enough info. Maybe the job requires heels? Men have no clue how blessed they are not to have to wear those ^&*()%$# things to work.
What job 'requires' heels? That is outrageous and surely not enforceable. There are jobs which genuinely require uncomfortable clothing, such as safety wear. Women accepting heels being forced on them when there is no reasonable reason are hardly doing themselves any favours.

I'm surprised nobody's commented about women's only parking merely meaning they're extra wide stalls with no pillars around that have drive through exiting (meaning they aren't required to back up). Not that i'm stating all women are bad drivers, but i'm suprised nobody else has made this joke.
Perhaps it's because no-one wanted to be that obvious and that boring.

In Korea, some parking lots will have pink painted slots for "female parking", and it feels kinda like being put in the same category as the disabled. The disabled need extra space for obvious reasons, they do their best, but the laws of physics will not allow them the agility of non-disabled people and people with average health. Also, some parking lots will have places marked as "family", because, again, families with little children need more space, I find this completely acceptable and the way it should be. But what about the women's parking places? If a woman is disabled, she can go to a place for disabled, if she's a mom with kids, she can go to the place marked for families. A pregnant woman might also use the disabled or family marked places. Why would an average healthy woman need a special parking place? Oh... It's because "women can't drive very well"? Because "we're not so confident in handling vechicles"? Come on.....
It's purely to do with thinking that it is safer for women if they are nearer the exit or shops. It's isn't because women can't drive very well as, I might be wrong about this, but don't stats say the opposite? Accident-wise? I don't know. All that aside, it's about making things possibly safer for women. There are pros and cons I know. Up to women if they want to make use of them.
Thanks Si - that's what I thought. Have to say the only people I know who have had accidents in car parks have all been men... for all those ''joking' about women parking.
Male car insurance is higher than female. Insurers know risks better than anyone.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
Yeah, you have a good point. But the meaning changes within different locations contexts. Statistics also show that Korea is a pretty safe country in regards to crime, and the place where I saw it really makes no sense having these special women's places. It's a super market with a well lit and not too huge parking lot, that closes at 11pm. Even if we exclude possibilities of crime, and take into account the heavy weight of the groceries, there's a lot of shopping cart placements all over the parking lot, for the sake of customers' comfort regardless of gender. Also, these women marked places are not separate from other, regular places, so even if it were to protect from crime, it fails in this regard.

The guy who said the strangler now knows where to go is right! This is a rape-homicide waiting to happen.
What if the spaces are in the safest parts of the car parks - the busy parts, the well lit parts, the parts with CCTV?
A sign saying “Woman” makes a rape and murder inevitable? That is a truly terrible state of affairs if true.

Women pretend to want Equality but they don't. They want special treatment. You will be equal the day I break your jaw with one single punch at the bar because you were rude without getting an assault on a female charge. You will be equal when I knock you the fuck out with 0 consequences after you slap me because your pissed off and think men can't hit back. Women don't want equality, because they can't even begin to proses what that actually means in the real world.
Tyler, I'm curious why you equate equality with being able to hit women without consequence. 'You're equal when I can beat you up in a socially acceptable way' is bothersome. In this case, equality should be that you are NOT able to break a man's jaw because he's 'rude' rather than that you ARE able to break a woman's jaw because she talks back to you. And while I would agree that there would be no 'assault on a female' charge because the individual would not be female, I think most men would press assault charges were you to break their bones because they insulted you. As they should, because it would be illegal regardless. And you should have the right to defend yourself. But you should do so with reasonable force, and there are qualifiers as to whether you were truly under threat and if you acted reasonably to the threat at hand. I think there is the potential for inequality here, but not being able to knock someone out cold for 'slapping' you is a poor example.
Tyler Duffy - not all countries slap a surcharge on punishing a crime just because the victim was a woman.
Tyler, as I stated above, there are two ways to make this situation equal: You propose that equality comes from being able to hit women if they look at you sideways. I propose that equality will come if you do NOT hit men if they look at you sideways. Additionally, I know men. I know men who have restrained themselves in a fight; who have walked away. I also know men who have not. I even know someone who made someone pay the 'ultimate consequence'. He was subsequently charged with manslaughter because that behavior was not legally acceptable between men, either. If you cannot restrain yourself escalating a slap to broken bones or potential death, I would suggest you speak with a professional about why that is. I do not mean that mockingly or derisively. I mean with all sincerity that there may be an alternative way to release emotions besides getting in fights that have the potential to end in death. Kind regards; I wish you well.
The natural state of physicality is escalation. Someone slaps you, generally you up the ante, so-to speak. The goal is to stop the altercation. That being said, if a woman slaps or punches a man it is only natural for him to escalate, and, with feminists crying for equality, they should be fully prepared to accept the consequences of their actions. Assault is assault, no matter who starts or ends it. Also, to add to this, women are generally more prone to psychological abuse and manipulation, which has shown to be far more damaging than physical violence. Where are the laws to protect men from that harmful behavior? Oh, that's right, they don't exist. The law is so immeasurably favored towards women - it's flat out disgusting.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
You shouldn't be able to hit a women who hasn't hit you at all. But all things being equal, men beat the crap out of one another all the time for simple giving them a look they don't like. If a man did the same to a women not only would it be assault it would be assault on a female, that comes with double jail time. The overwhelming majority of men who get in bar fights that result in injury don't file charges , we get up brush it off have a beer, wake up in the morning and realize we probably need to go to the hospital. And fyi if a man hits or slaps another man there is no such thing as restraint. You beat that fucker until he stops moving or curls up in a little ball, if your lucky it will end there. The consequences of getting physical can be that you pay ultimate consequence. I doubt women want to be held to same standard. In fact I know they don't. The size of the individual is meaningless. It just means your more likely to suffer sever bodily injury.
Jeez - women want special treatment of a special parking space because they’re being specially targetted for special violence by special men. You’re welcome to a special parking space love. If you’re willing to take the discriminatory violence with it.
Not aimed at you Si. I know I'll get downvoted to fuck for this (seeing as there appears to be a particular emphasis on dumb downvoting) but equal rights doesn't necessarily mean equal treatment. Sometimes, to give people the same level of protection or whatever, it means that special treatment has to take place to raise it to the same standard. Fuck there are some fucking stupid people on here. Red arrow away.
Sounds like he’s the reason women need safer parking spaces

Tyler - no, that is not the definition of equality. If two different groups are to have the same opportunities sometimes positive descrimination needs to take place to ensure that equally qualified people, though different in some way, get the same crack of the whip.

Si - lol what? Treating women the exact same as Men is equality. The fact is your not a fan of the reality of the real world and how men treat one another. Most Women have no clue of the "Privilege" lol. Don't ask for Equality when it's not what you really want. You want equality (that you have) plus the special treatment that has always been given to women. And that's fine, just admit it. I would love to women when it comes to social value, you know free drinks , insane opportunities because of your looks alone, but let's be honest.....I don't want it at the expense of having to deal with periods and pushing a watermelon sized kid out of kiwi sized hole. Got to look at the big picture.

They don't want equality when I find your car on fire, upside down on the side of the road with you and your boyfriend trapped inside. Because any man would choose to save the women first because it's the right thing to do, the guy always comes 2nd. I doubt you want that to change. I sure a fuck don't, women may not be any more valuable to society but I prefer the world where they are treated as if they are. I bet you do to.
Tends to be based, in a rescue scenario, on ease of rescue, likelihood of survival and other factors not linked with gender.
Actually you’re completely wrong. More men survive disasters than women or children.
Hey, man. You seem like this is striking a special nerve with you. You okay? Need a hug?

So the fact is no matter what you do for a woman you are wrong. And ignoring is way worse. So keep doing and being wrong. You're either a sexist or uncaring dick. No other options. Luckily it got clarified for her.

Dedicated parking spots is not my definition of equality.
It's not about equality, but safety, as women are at a higher risk of getting assaulted while walking to their car at night. Did you not read the responses?
What about disabled persons dedicated parking areas?

Just park in it if it bothers you that much. It’s not a law. I park in those military spaces all the time. I’m a woman, I get why the spaces are there but if it annoys you so much then just don’t listen to it. Whatever.

Oh dear.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
Wrong- if men and women are equal or should be treated equally, then women don't require special treatment- this is hypocritical in the extreme and makes a mockery of feminist ideals.
The special treatment women receive is the violence they’re being subjected to by misogynists.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
understanding the difference between women and men is the right thing.

Sigh...

Rosie - what your advocating for is not equality you are advocating for equality of outcome not equality of opportunity. Often used is the term equity to describe what you are. Equity is inherently evil.

We have women's parking spaces too. Usually, they are extra wide....
