Guy Prepares Dinner For His Girlfriend, Gets Mad When She Decides To Feed Her Dog The Leftovers And Asks Her To Leave

Dating someone sounds exciting as you get to explore different places together for the first time, show them your favorite spots, discuss various things, and find out your similarities and differences. This part where you get to know each other is important in a way that it helps to realize if this person is the one with whom you wish to spend the rest of your life or maybe they are just meant to become someone you used to know. Reddit user @u/throwawayscraps decided to share the situation that happened with her date and ask people online for their point of view. The 24-year-old woman revealed that she has been dating a 28-year-old man named Jay for 4 months now. While she’s been very happy with Jay, the recent situation she experienced while spending time with her boyfriend made her seek advice online.

More Info: Reddit

Dating someone new is fun as it makes even the most simple things such as going out for dinner more interesting and exciting

The author of the post shared that one Sunday, she was invited on a date that was planned by her boyfriend. He decided that they should go for a walk together with her dog, and then he would bring her to his house for the first time and make her dinner. What sounded like a perfect day had an unexpected ending.

However, some date nights are meant to flop, as it happened to one Reddit user who decided to share how she got into an argument with her boyfriend over ‘table scraps’

The woman shared that everything was fine until they sat down for dinner. Her boyfriend made them some roast and vegetables. The girlfriend was the first one to finish her plate, so she went to the kitchen where she decided that she could feed her dog with the leftovers from her plate. The woman shared that there was half of the roast still on her plate, so she cut half of it, took some uncooked vegetables from the fridge, since she feeds her dog Shelby only raw food, and was about to take it outside so that her pet could eat it.

After her boyfriend made her dinner, the woman decided to feed her dog Shelby with what was left from her plate, and adding some vegetables from the fridge

Once her boyfriend saw her going out with the plate, he asked what she was doing, to which she answered that she was about to feed her dog. This didn’t sit well with Jay as he explained that the food he prepared was for her and him, and not Shelby. The man was upset with the author of the post because she didn’t even bother to ask him if she could give this food to her dog.

However, the boyfriend wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of her dog eating the food that he only prepared for her and himself

The whole situation escalated to the point where Jay asked her to leave his place. After this, the woman decided to first talk about this with her friend who didn’t support her decision to just feed the dog without asking if she could use the dinner food for this. This is when OP decided to ask people online what their take on this was.

Users of Reddit were quite harsh and honest about the woman’s behavior. A lot of them agreed that woman should’ve asked Jay if she could use the leftovers from his dinner instead of just assuming that this was a normal thing to do. Another thing that a lot of members were concerned about was Shelby’s diet and how appropriate it was for the dog.

The man decided to take the food from his girlfriend and asked her to leave

According to the author of the story, she feeds her dog only raw food. A raw food diet usually consists of bones, organ meat, raw eggs, vegetables and fruits. It’s believed that a raw food diet is beneficial for dogs as it makes them healthier and more energetic, and they then have cleaner teeth, healthier skin, and shinier coats. However, this raw diet also has some cons. Those who feed their pet raw foods risk catching bacteria found in raw meat, as well as the fact that feeding a dog whole bones might choke an animal or break their teeth. It’s also important to keep the diet balanced and check your pet’s health at a veterinary clinic.

After their argument, the woman talked with her friend about it, but even the friend was on the boyfriend’s side, so OP went online for others unbiased opinions

People in the comments were quick to notice that the woman was about to feed her dog a roast, which very often contains various seasonings and salt that is bad for dogs and is not considered a raw diet dish. The woman calmed those in the comments, stating that she knew how the roast was made and assured everyone that her dog’s diet is approved by her veterinarian.

Soon after, the woman came back with some clarifications as a lot of people were concerned about her dog’s diet

Image credita: youngthousands (not the actual image)

To those concerned, the woman explained how she feeds her dog and that everything is checked with her veterinarian

After the whole discussion online, OP came back with an update: she let others know that their comments made her realize her mistakes and that after all, Jay decided to break things off. It was added that despite the woman apologizing for how things were handled during the dinner, her boyfriend shared that he just didn’t like her habit of not doing things without first asking him. The man revealed that he didn’t actually enjoy her taking his food or drink without his permission. The author of the story promised to now work on herself and make sure to overcome this poor habit.

What do you think about this situation? Don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

People online didn’t hold back and explained what did the author of the story did wrong

My thoughts exactly. He took the presumedly clean plate back to the kitchen, wrapped what was on it in foil and sent her off with it. It wasn’t so much about having leftovers or the cost, but about the emotional labor he put into doing something romantic and the sentiment of a nice home-cooked dinner to wrap up a date. Everything she did was not ok, just as she has continually done when they eat out. This is about taking a romantic moment and turning it, once again, into an act of entitlement and inconsideration. My guess is this was his last straw and saw no reason to move forward with her. Also, I bet he was hurt with how she treated his efforts.

Bad manners and overall inconsideration towards her bf aside: she needs to do some SERIOUS, IN-DEPTH research involving lots of q and a with her vet if she wants to continue feeding her dog a raw diet. Her ignorance is astounding, she is potentially poisoning her dog as not all human food is okay for dogs. Grapes, for example, are highly toxic for dogs. The dog could end up with pancreatitis or worse or dead. Girl, WTF?!

The "raw-feeding" community are some of the most argumentative, know-it-all arsėwipes around. They make militant vegans look normal. I have noticed that recently more and more people are coming forward with their bad experiences of raw feeding, where they have unknowingly taken years off their dog's life and are now devastated by this consequence. Raw feeding is *not* easy, it requires just as much effort as eating a truly healthy vegan diet.

Onions are toxic to dogs and are usually the first ingredient next to meat in any roast. But even if no onions were used, YTA, OP. You showed your date that your dog is more important than him. You ignored him when he said his leftovers weren't dog food. Then you had the gall to argue with that man, who planned an awesome day for you all. Yikes. I don't even know if this relationship is salvageable. Also, dogs need proper dog food. Only AHs don't provide this.

I’ve got a large rib roast in the freezer that cost $80 on sale for some upcoming “special” occasion. I sure wouldn’t be happy if someone dipped into potential leftovers that would make a whole other meal to give to their dog. I mean, I have a lovely shih tzu who I feed special kibble I get at great cost from the vet, plus I make him a stew concoction he (and my new kittens apparently) love, and he might get pieces of meat from our meals we don’t eat, but I’m not going to give him a hunk of prime rib!

Unless you paid for it, or at least *asked*, you have NO RIGHT to feed your dog what could be up to a pound of expensive meat! I have no issues with raw feeding, but no one has the right to just toss someone else's meal to your dog! As others have said, you bring your own dog's dinner *with you*. Rude and entitled~~he's lucky to have dodged *you*!

I feed my cats a raw food diet. I can honestly say not only is it expensive, it takes a lot of preplanning and variation to make sure they get all their nutritional needs met. For the first 2 years I did it, my vet did tests every 6 months to make sure all their nutritional needs were being met. It's a lot more than just grabbing some raw meat from the fridge and putting it in a bowl. But holy smokes the level of entitlement in the post! I can't imagine doing that! That's crazy! Also...I don't know about OP but how does feeding the dog a raw food diet then giving them half a roast have any relation to each other?

marilynrussell avatar

I’m really not sure why your vet needed to do tests other than to get more money from you. I mean, cats are obligate carnivores and you’re feeding them raw meat, so what’s the problem? Barn cats who roam around my house look pretty healthy and strong when they show up for some kitty kibble and a chat. I assume they are feeding themselves alright the rest of the time, just as nature intended. Seriously I’m confused as I’m sure you did your own in-depth research first.

I get very upset whenever my family wants to feed our dogs meat that has been prepared with spices... A roast doesn't qualify for a so called raw diet, the only way for this to be acceptable at all was for her to ask her bf to save a piece of meat before cooking it to feed her dog afterwards, not raiding his kitchen and taking whatever she wants... she doesn't even mention knowing what spices were used and if they were harmful for the dog...

I would never have given the dog an leftover piece of roast (they could have finished the roast the next day, it was cooked on purpose, it's an expensive piece of meat). However, he who even immediately throws her out of the house for this reason seems to me just as stupid, if not more so.

So I'm the odd one out cause I would think if YOU INVITE MY DOG with me, why would I not assume the dog could participate? A lot of people who do not have kids, thiers pets are their kids. I treat these people as I would would have wanted to be treated when my kids were younger. He knew how she fed her dog, invited her dog to go with them knowing the end result was dinner. Around my parts, you do the inviting, you pay. That includes inviting kids/pets. I cannot invite anyone out but if I say they can come over and bring kids or pet to my house then they eat too or I do not invite you over because I cannot afford it.

I can see that perspective. I mean if he invited the dog he should of had dinner plan to feed the dog. They just had a long hike, and the dog probably was hungry. I think she should have asked, do you have anything for Shelby to eat? It is possible that at her age she didn't realize just how expensive a roast is. Communication in any relationship is very important and I think they both communitied poorly. She assumed she could feed the dog the roast and did not respond to his statement that it was not dog food. He did not use any further words, but picked up the plate, wrapped it in foil and asked her to leave. Both approaches avoided a conversation. I think the conversation would be more helpful for both of them.

The title of this piece is misleading, "table scraps" should be replaced with "enough good food for another meal"!

As a dog lover, I thought of course it should be okay. Then I read it and yeah, that is an a*****e move. Ask, and/or prepare for the dog beforehand.

YTA Should have at least asked before taking a quarter of the entire roast to feed her dog. She sounds entitled. If she's acting like that the very first time she's at his house, imagine what she'll be like after a year.

I cook twice a week and fill the fridge and freezer with leftovers. I'd be pissed if someone just assumed they could do anything with my carefully budgeted food without asking.

Ok, now I definitely want to know more about that stew concoction you make for your pets. I want to find something I can make for my cats that I know will be good for them. Do you think you could give me your recipe, or tell me more?

I’m really not sure why your vet needed to do tests other than to get more money from you. I mean, cats are obligate carnivores and you’re feeding them raw meat, so what’s the problem? Barn cats who roam around my house look pretty healthy and strong when they show up for some kitty kibble and a chat. I assume they are feeding themselves alright the rest of the time, just as nature intended. Seriously I’m confused as I’m sure you did your own in-depth research first.

Bruh roast ain't cheap enough to be considered table scraps like he was probably planning on eating the leftovers for his dinner the next day or something. You ain't married so it's still his food and property so you really should have asked.

Yeah a quarter of a cooked roast is a lot of food, and of seasonings for a dog! What kind of person assumes that uneaten food is scraps and not leftovers for another meal? That's also not raw food and she was making a lot of assumptions about what he'd planned with the food *he* made

I love dogs almost more than people but if I were in this situation, most likely knowing the dinner would run into my dog's dinner time, I'd ask if I could give some to it if not just bring my own food for it. I really wanna side with OP but it seemed fishy the second she said she took food from the leftovers and not actual table scraps.

It seems she has a strong history of helping herself to food off his plate when they eat out. Even after being asked not to, she’d ignore him and just dig in… so maybe this was the straw that broke the camels back. He’d probably just had enough of her s**t.

But you or I would give our dog a little something from our plates and we would take the dog's food with us. We wouldn't go into his kitchen and rifle through half a roast without even asking, which is what this person did.

She should have brought her own normal dog food and bowl for her dog. I know some folks that would never eat off a plate after a dog licked it regardless of how many times it was run through the dishwasher.

Err...why do people don't communicate? Is it seriously too much to ask if you can feed your dog some really nice leftovers that would make a good meal, the next day? And while the poster was a bit of an a**hole, imo, is it really necessary to make her leave because she was a bit thoughtless?

Good for you! There are plenty of man out there, you will find your perfect match but He is not the one. This is just one thing you just learned, there will be more and you won't be happy. Like you we feed our dogs a different diet, rice, chicken, and other meats, veggies and It is no one's business how I spent my money. My husband and daughter(19) are as crazy for our dogs as I am. This is a part of you that fulfill you, don't let anyone make you feel ashamed of it. No one more loyal than your dog. As for him, leave him in the rear view mirror and be happy.
