40 Movies Nobody Ever Talks About, But Are Cult Classics According To People In This Online Group
The rule is that if a movie is good, it will become popular because people will be talking about it. Then they will be able to share their opinions on it, what they liked and what they didn’t like, was it like they expected it to be, but there are exceptions to this rule.
There are movies that some individuals consider to be the best they have ever seen, but it seems that others haven’t even heard of them. It’s a shame that good movies with interesting plot lines and good acting work aren’t seen by more people, but Reddit user darkweirdvalley probably changed that by asking “What’s a movie you love that you swear no one ever talks about like the world has forgotten it?”
More than 35k people joined the thread to share what they think are cinematographic masterpieces more people should know of and to find like-minded people. It’s safe to say that the movies they mentioned are not forgotten and they finally found someone to talk to about them.

I always reference this film whenever someone says Bruce Willis can't act/do comedy. And Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn are brilliant in it. It's a great film!
Bruce Willis is underrated as an actor in general, I think. Younger people aren't aware that his start was in comedy, so they only know his action films. He was incredible in The Sixth Sense as well.

This is brilliant. Went to see it at the movies when it came out (completely by accident) and recently showed it to my daughter who (despite her usual teen cynicism for any movies I pick) thought it was awesome. The effects are great for the time, and that end scene at the funeral is just sublime. Meryl Streep should definitely do more comedy.
LOVED this film . . . the clothes, the dialogue, the quiet bizarre comedy. Bruce Willis was sensational, Isabella Rossellini was hypnotic and funny at the same time. And the party scene with lost celebrities -- I could not look away!

SIGN ME UP as a fan of this flick! What a film! Don't know the locations but they are more than sets, costuming interesting, people with personalities instead of furniture substitutes. Bruce Willis doing comedy? Gala party with long departed personalities. Snappy ending that almost crosses the line . . . but who cares? Every time I watch it I see something new.
I was literally just talking about this movie!!!!!! Part of me wants a modern remake because of how far we have come with cgi but another part is nervous about it cuz the original is such a friggen classic!!!!!! I've never actually met anyone outside of my family who has any clue this movie even exists...I mean.. it was made the year I was born but I don't even have friends my age and still haven't come across someone in the wild who knows this movie!!!

This is one of my top 10 favorite movies. It got a lot of hate because it really didn't do a good job of interpreting the source material but I still love both the movie and the comic book. Brilliant casting with Tilda Swinton as the angel Gabriel.

It's a cute little 80s movie about some alien robots who took up residence in this old apartment complex and when the residents are threatened with eviction so the place could be torn down, the robots help the tenants and the tenants help the robot aliens. Anyways, I enjoyed it.
Short Circuit, literally everyone that I talk to has never watched it, or heard of it. It's sad too, because I love that movie so much.

Funny story with this one. I studied the book at school, so I had read the book a lot. That year for my birthday the movie came out around the same time. I have a fractured family structure so none of them really talk to each other. For some reason nearly every family member decided that they wanted to take me to a screening of the film. So I saw the film nearly 7 times in the matter of two weeks.
My grandma was one of the last, I didn’t have the heart to tell her I had already seen it 6 times already. We were sitting and watching and unintentionally, I was saying the lines word for word. My grandma noticed and she asked “have you seen this already?” I responded “no, it’s just very accurate to the book” to which she replied “wow, you must have read the book many times.

Aside from one instance on Reddit, I’ve never heard a single person talk about the 2005 movie Robots. It’s got adult jokes that kids won’t catch, a lot of humor, and Robin Williams.
I didn't realise it wasn't that popular, I thoroughly enjoyed it and even have it on DVD.

Fly Away Home. Was obsessed with it and it is never mentioned. Was it a fever dream???
Wonderful movie! Yeah, I remember it, I should watch it again, but mainly I want every human being aged 10-16 to watch it. One of the best coming-of-age movies ever made, and one of the few that tells kids that growing out of childhood isn't just about falling in love.
Balto! Which I could have sworn was massively popular!! When people started talking about The Swan Princess again randomly, I assumed Balto would be next as they were two of my favorites as a kid. Yet when I mentioned it to my friends and such, no one recalled it.
Also please let me mention the 10th Kingdom which is technically a series! Ah suck an elf.
Thank You for Smoking. And the irony of the whole film is nobody actually smokes a cigarette as well. I always loved that small detail.
Although there are deleted scenes of them smoking but thankfully they decided to keep them out of the theatrical release.

I thought it was amazing, but the only time k bring it up, 90% of people have never heard of it, the other 10% hate it.
It sucks, but I’m convinced I’m the only fan of that movie. It was so different and dark. And the cast was amazing, it was a fantastic adult animated tale.
It just sucks no one is ever able to fan boy over it with me.

This is my favourite movie of all time and it definitely defined a large part of my childhood. The art kicked off my interest in drawing (usually bad OCs, but it was fun); the aesthetic and story inspired my imagination to run wild; the awesome soundtrack fueled those fantasies (hello, maladaptive daydreaming); it got me to read Treasure Island; and it started an interest in sci-fi, fantasy, and, oddly, naval history...the latter bringing me closer to my dad, who's really into naval history. Edward Norton is hilarious... I still want to see someone get drunk on alfalfa drops and orange juice! And Robin Williams... oh, gods, to see him playing a villain. I have this gem on DVD, and love watching it when I'm feeling depressed. It is ridiculous, but so, so, so worth it!

One of my favorite movies is an old black and white one from the 40s called "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". I never meet anyone who's even heard of it.
I remember this one. A classic for sure. I think that Star Trek TNG paid homage to it when they had that episode where Beverly Crusher fell for that "ghost."

Muriels Wedding. Very sweet and funny Australian movie about a girl in a small town, who is always mocked about how unsuccesful and ugly she is, until she takes her life in her own hands while being morally supported by ABBA songs. The Waterloo revenge scene is my favourite.
Another one that should be on this list: What Dreams May Come, with Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding jr. Robin Williams in such a serious, straight laced role really opened my eyes to what an absolute gem and artistic talent he was. I miss him endlessly, and I really should watch that one again in his memory.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. I laughed so hard El orfanato (The Orphanage)- very good ghost movie. Crna mačka, beli mačor (Black Cat, White Cat)- it was crazy af, but that ending. Love it.
I love the Tremors series. Especially the fourth film which is a prequel set in the old west. Gun slinging cowboys facing giant man eating underground worms? Holy CRAP that's badass. Also Tremors invented the whole "Monster that hunts you by sound so you have to stay really quiet" concept before A Quiet Place did.

I think Pan's Labyrinth should be on this list. Not sure if it was actually really big outside the US, but when I talk about it in the US people get really interested until I tell them it's subtitled. But it was done so well I always end up forgetting that I'm reading subtitles and is hands down one of my favorite movies of all time

Harold and Maud. A weird movie about a young man who falls in love with an 80 year old woman. The rest is so weird that it's hard to explain it.
The Court Jester is one of my favorite old films! I love that it's on this list! Danny Kaye was such a talent and a master of physical comedy. His wife wrote all the songs for the movie and the musical sequences were just so much fun! Plus, you have a young Angela Lansbury and Glynnis Johns who are both fantastic as a spoiled princess and a rebel spy, respectively. This is the film that coined the expression: " Get it? Got it. Good!". Definitely a classic! 🙂
It Happened One Night with Clark Cable and Claudette Colbert. Meet John Doe with Cary Cooper as well as him in Ball of Fire with Barbara Stanwick. I really liked Razors Edge but funnily enough the Bill Murray version. My teenager and I recently watched Wings the first academy award winner for best picture. Silent, but you soon forget you’re reading as well cuz really good. And My Man Godfrey with Carol Lombard is so funny. Oldies but all stand the test of time, still relatable and nothing now inappropriate.
Robert Altman’s live action Popeye starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duval got terrible reviews when it was released but I loved it.
You missed the best comedy and most romantic movie ever made about New York: A Thousand Clowms.
How can you miss Labyrinth and 2 Vincent Price masterpieces: The Abominable Dr Phibes and Dr Phibes Rises From The Grave! Campy. Catchy. Well worth finding.

Jock and the bushveld, is another South African classic that not very many ppl n know about. Just a warning there is one very sad scene. (won't spoil) but a must watch.
Hercules Returns, 1993, Australian's scrambling to dub over the movie being played in their cinema when the reel arrives with Italian audio instead of English. Who else has seen it? Tell me it isn't one of the funniest movies ever created?! "On one condition, ya lower yer nipples!". To this day that line has me rolling on the floor.
My vote would be “Brother From Another Planet”. Don’t let the goofy name fool you. This cult favorite from the 80’s is about an enslaved alien who comes to earth to escape oppression. He’s Black and is hunted by evil white-skinned “police”. It’s poignant and thoughtful, well worth the effort to find it.

Flight of the Navigator is one of my all time favourite films. I have a 3D printed Puckmaren :D It was my absolute fave as a kid. I loved DARYL as well from the same era. I don't think they're underrated, they're just kids' films of their time. Neither are close to unheard of or unknown by people who were kids in the 80s.
I would also like to add Ruthless People to this list. I can't say "body" normally anymore, I have to say it like one of the cops does in that movie. XD

What about any of Mel Brooks movies like Dracula: Dead & Loving It, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Blazing Saddles, & Young Frankenstein. As well Silver Streak with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor.
I've been tracking down older kids movies like Second Hand Lions, Flight of the Navigator, Fly Away Home, Holes. I don't like to be a "kids these days" kind of person, but I really haven't found kids movies these days that have the same slow plot and character development. Everything is so bright and noisy and has micro-second shots and it all goes really fast. I feel like it's not great for kid's attention spans. I can only think of a few newer kids movies that are slower like that, if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. "We Can Be Heroes" on Netflix was pretty good. (Side note: DO NOT watch Bridge to Tarabithia without first reading through a plot summary and deciding if your kids can handle it. My kids did not. I didn't know. It was a bad night.)
Empire Records - Anthony La Paglia, Rory Cochrane, Renee Zellweger, Liv Tyler, cracking sound track. Remix Fan Edition is the superior version in my opinion. So many fun moments, especially the shoplifter chase!

Two of my favorites that NO ONE even knows about 1) "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" (2001), made to be incredibly bad its funny and some great quotes! 2) "Noises Off" (1992). Its about a stage play being put on and all the shananagans that happens backstage before, during and after the show.
Midnight Special. Basically ET meets Superman as a boy. Very surprised by it. Michael Shannon is just incredible.

“The Terminal”, Tom Hanks acting is among the best performances I’ve ever seen and I believe it’s one of his lesser known movies.
If any of these films are not in your library, kick yourself in the ass or face whichever is closer or bigger and go get them. This list is startlingly, astoundingly perfect in its inclusivity and I have probably never seen such a close to perfect list in all my born days. One of my favorites that is not on this list is “Gentleman Broncos”, by the same writer as Napoleon dynamite, great movie but it bombed in theaters. Sam Rockwell is great in it, so many funny parts throughout the movie, highly suggest watching this movie if you liked Napoleon Dynamite.

Kirsten Duntz, Gaby Hoffman, Rachel Leigh Cook, Merrit Weaver, Heather Matarazzo, and Vincent Kartheiser in a comedy about girls at a private school in the sixties starting a revolution when the board tries to merge with a boys school. I found it by accident and it became one of my favorites. Makes me tear up every time. Genuinely bummed that people don't know about it. "Up your ziggy with a wa wa brush!"

One of my favorite movies is an old black and white one from the 40s called "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". I never meet anyone who's even heard of it.
I remember this one. A classic for sure. I think that Star Trek TNG paid homage to it when they had that episode where Beverly Crusher fell for that "ghost."
Load More Replies... Muriels Wedding. Very sweet and funny Australian movie about a girl in a small town, who is always mocked about how unsuccesful and ugly she is, until she takes her life in her own hands while being morally supported by ABBA songs. The Waterloo revenge scene is my favourite.
Another one that should be on this list: What Dreams May Come, with Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding jr. Robin Williams in such a serious, straight laced role really opened my eyes to what an absolute gem and artistic talent he was. I miss him endlessly, and I really should watch that one again in his memory.
I LOVE this movie! Saw it in the theatre and everyone I went with (a very diverse group of 10 people) loved it too. Robin was such an amazing talent at basically everything he did

I love the Tremors series. Especially the fourth film which is a prequel set in the old west. Gun slinging cowboys facing giant man eating underground worms? Holy CRAP that's badass. Also Tremors invented the whole "Monster that hunts you by sound so you have to stay really quiet" concept before A Quiet Place did.
Haha... I first saw Tremors on TV when I was little. I had to sneak it because my mom thought it might scare me too much. I still love the movie and watch it from time to time.

Not sure if it was actually really big outside the US, but when I talk about it in the US people get really interested until I tell them it's subtitled. But it was done so well I always end up forgetting that I'm reading subtitles and is hands down one of my favorite movies of all time

The Court Jester is one of my favorite old films! I love that it's on this list! Danny Kaye was such a talent and a master of physical comedy. His wife wrote all the songs for the movie and the musical sequences were just so much fun! Plus, you have a young Angela Lansbury and Glynnis Johns who are both fantastic as a spoiled princess and a rebel spy, respectively. This is the film that coined the expression: " Get it? Got it. Good!". Definitely a classic! 🙂
It Happened One Night with Clark Cable and Claudette Colbert. Meet John Doe with Cary Cooper as well as him in Ball of Fire with Barbara Stanwick. I really liked Razors Edge but funnily enough the Bill Murray version. My teenager and I recently watched Wings the first academy award winner for best picture. Silent, but you soon forget you’re reading as well cuz really good. And My Man Godfrey with Carol Lombard is so funny. Oldies but all stand the test of time, still relatable and nothing now inappropriate.
Robert Altman’s live action Popeye starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duval got terrible reviews when it was released but I loved it.

How can you miss Labyrinth and 2 Vincent Price masterpieces: The Abominable Dr Phibes and Dr Phibes Rises From The Grave! Campy. Catchy. Well worth finding.

Jock and the bushveld, is another South African classic that not very many ppl n know about. Just a warning there is one very sad scene. (won't spoil) but a must watch.
Hercules Returns, 1993, Australian's scrambling to dub over the movie being played in their cinema when the reel arrives with Italian audio instead of English. Who else has seen it? Tell me it isn't one of the funniest movies ever created?! "On one condition, ya lower yer nipples!". To this day that line has me rolling on the floor.
My vote would be “Brother From Another Planet”. Don’t let the goofy name fool you. This cult favorite from the 80’s is about an enslaved alien who comes to earth to escape oppression. He’s Black and is hunted by evil white-skinned “police”. It’s poignant and thoughtful, well worth the effort to find it.

Flight of the Navigator is one of my all time favourite films. I have a 3D printed Puckmaren :D It was my absolute fave as a kid. I loved DARYL as well from the same era. I don't think they're underrated, they're just kids' films of their time. Neither are close to unheard of or unknown by people who were kids in the 80s.
I would also like to add Ruthless People to this list. I can't say "body" normally anymore, I have to say it like one of the cops does in that movie. XD

I've been tracking down older kids movies like Second Hand Lions, Flight of the Navigator, Fly Away Home, Holes. I don't like to be a "kids these days" kind of person, but I really haven't found kids movies these days that have the same slow plot and character development. Everything is so bright and noisy and has micro-second shots and it all goes really fast. I feel like it's not great for kid's attention spans. I can only think of a few newer kids movies that are slower like that, if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. "We Can Be Heroes" on Netflix was pretty good. (Side note: DO NOT watch Bridge to Tarabithia without first reading through a plot summary and deciding if your kids can handle it. My kids did not. I didn't know. It was a bad night.)
Empire Records - Anthony La Paglia, Rory Cochrane, Renee Zellweger, Liv Tyler, cracking sound track. Remix Fan Edition is the superior version in my opinion. So many fun moments, especially the shoplifter chase!
