Dad Tries To Teach His 6-Year-Old Son A Lesson About Money, Doesn’t Expect Him To Start A Successful Business
All 6-year-old Emmett wanted was a bike, but his father didn’t want to give it to him that easy, so he came up a clever idea. He told his son that he needed to earn the bike money himself. “He got some old toys and stuffed animals together and put them out for sale. He ended up making $70 that day. He made enough to get his bike. The next day, we happened to be walking around Sam’s Club and saw this snow cone machine. He asked if we could get that instead of the bike so he could start his own business and make more money.”
After a brief discussion the boy’s parents agreed to help him with his business, but on one condition – he had to sell snow cones for at least one hour every Saturday. “His first time out he made $12, then $17, then $25 and he’s been hovering around there ever since.” And just like that Emmett started his business with only a bag of ice and three flavors. “He’s responsible for tracking his supplies and knowing when he needs to buy more, spending the money for all future flavor purchases, repaying us for the other half of the snow cone machine, and paying ‘taxes’.” According to his dad, Emmett is planning to save his money for college, but little does he know that his ‘tax money’ is already going into his college fund!
“We would like our son to follow his passions in the future. Our only expectation for him is to grow up to be a good person who contributes to society. Although he enjoys selling snow cones now, he consistently tells us he wants to be ‘a library teacher and a karate teacher.’ He loves to read and he is currently a purple belt in his karate class, so it definitely makes sense to us why he gravitates to those professions.” Emmett’s father Jered told Bored Panda.

Meet Emmett, a 6-year-old who really wanted a new bike
But his parents decided to teach their son a little lesson about money and responsibilities and told him he should earn the money himself
“He got some old toys and put them out for sale. He ended up making $70 that day. He made enough to get his bike”, said Emmet’s father
“The next day, we were walking around Sam’s Club and saw a snow cone machine. He asked if we could get that instead of the bike so he could start his own business”
Emmett’s parents agreed but with one condition – he had to sell snow cones for at least one hour every Saturday
“His first time out he made $12, then $17, then $25 and he’s been hovering around there ever since”
He started with a bag of ice and three flavors, and after he saved enough for a bike he decided to grow his business instead
“He’s responsible for tracking his supplies and knowing when he needs to buy more, repaying us for the other half of the snow cone machine, and paying ‘taxes’”
Emmett’s dad did check with the township to make sure he didn’t need a permit, so he wouldn’t get shut down like these kids on a memorial day
Emmet now has 21 flavors and has been invited to local events to sell his snow cones, he even had a full fire truck of guys come out and show their support!
Even though Emmett is a successful businessman, right now he dreams to be ‘a library teacher and a karate teacher’
Emmett is planning to save his money for college, but little does he know that his ‘tax money’ is already going into his college fund!
“We would like our son to follow his passions in the future. Our only expectation for him is to grow up to be a good person who contributes to society”
Many people were praising Emmett’s parents for teaching his son a valuable lesson about money and business

Nope. i want to try them too. But I always want to try each and every flavor when it comes to food (ice cream, cookies, any sweets, chips...and now I made myself hungry for junk food)

Load More Replies...Love love this! Fantastic way to teach him responsibility and leadership. Sounds like they struck a great balance of helping and supporting just enough to let his dream be possible, but holding back in that enough that Emmett's can really feel it's his own business and success. And that reflects real life too I think, it's normal to need people around you to help (investors, employees, business partners) but ultimately if you don't drive the dream yourself it won't happen.
This is good parenting. Not only is he not being spoiled by instant gratification, he is learning many skills, how to deal with people, business sense and how to work towards a goal. The bike he earns will mean more to him because he earned it. This kid will go far. And people who call the cops on little kids selling stuff are petty and small minded busy bodies. I’d like to buy a snow cone from him right now,!!
I envy US kids. In our country millions of representatives of multiple regulating and controlling organizations would cover any similar stand like s**t flies, with neighbors cheering and welcoming them. And they wonder why there is no small business in our country...
The same here (Hungary). The kid's counter would be flooded by public health investigators, taxation office and police in no time.

Honestly though I would buy a snow cone from him because I used to have sales when I was a kid and it's hard to make a profit from stuff like that. I'm really glad his business turned out successful.
If only my parents teach me to do business... It's a best lesson ever...
In response to the "I always stop and buy what kids are selling on the side of the road": That would expose you to serious legal jeopardy in my neighborhood! (drugs). But otherwise, I hear you!
You are brilliant parents. Your son is lucky to have you. It would be so easy just to give in and buy the bike and no lesson learned. You have taught your boy how to make money haw to be responsible and how to be a productive member of society as well as learning that you have to work for what you want in life. That little boy will turn into a wonderful adult and that is all down to you. Well done. Bravo !
Fantastic! The best item I've seen on BP for many weeks. Well done Emmett! And his parents too, of course.
One hour work per week. Heaven. Those parents have the perfect work-life balance figured out! :D
The best thing that they could teach their child! Good for them and good for him too. He's going to go far
This child could be teach to do a lot of things to contribute the society! Why that? Does he have any permission? Is in that country allowed that children work? When does he play? Did he bought all those material?
All of your questions were answered in the article, yes he has permission, a part time job is allowed just like a paper route etc. He does it an hour on Saturdays leaving a lot of time for play, and he did buy all matrrials, and continues to fo so. It was his choice to buy the machine 😀
