Dad Buys An Antique Chair For His Daughter, 2 Years Later Her Boyfriend Tells Her It’s Actually A Birthing Chair
Oh boy, here comes the dad. Remember the time when one dad accidentally bought a life-sized dinosaur—6 meters long, for those asking—for his 4-year-old son? There’s something about this cocktail of chance, a dad, and a credit card that makes it Everything nice! Except that we’re not dealing with the Powerpuff Girls here, but the real outcome of dad coming back from a random shopping spree.
This time, one Mexican dad decided to get his daughter a desk chair. Spoiled kids never appreciate parents’ effort and naturally the chair was dubbed ‘uncomfortable.’ After further investigation, the daughter was blown away: “it’s a birthing chair from the 19th century!” And guess what? There are a couple more very familiar-looking chairs in that house…

So, what is this mysterious object? Apparently, long before delivery rooms and fetal monitoring technology, wooden chairs like that were a common practice in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Anneliese Braunegg from Case Western Reserve University writes that “the primary birthing method shifted from use of the birthing chair to use of the birthing bed because it is the most convenient position for the doctor, as it allows him to view the baby more easily and use a device that midwives have not used.”
The birthing chair might appear rather suspicious to our modern eye, but research shows that the use of a birthing chair doesn’t increase the health risk to either the mom, nor the baby, and therefore represents an appropriate alternative to the traditional use of the birthing bed. The question is how many women would be willing to opt for such a quirky object to deliver a baby.

The African ones are not actually birthing chairs. They are just a really popular style of simple no-fixtures-required kind of carved chair that are really popular with African craftspeople and tourists alike. What I like most about the actual birthing chair is that it's a reminder that the position and height for giving birth used to be all about what was best for mother and baby. Now it's all about what the doctor can come in and do in the last five seconds and never mind the people who actually matter.

I have seen those African styled ones many times before. I have never seen this other style though-- it's really cool looking! It looks low to the ground, and with those handles on either side, you could hold on and lift yourself as you pushed during the birthing process. Very interesting!!! You could probably also do some really intense arm exercises with that chair-- not sure what you'd call them...but you life your entire body up off of the seat with your arms, getting some big muscles!! We could argue this also was some kind of Victorian workout equipment, hahahah!
My father collects antique chairs. We have several like the one I just took a photo of. It resembles so much to the first birthing chair. I was told the ones from my father are actually a spanish sheherds chair, hence the three legs so it adapts easier to any terrain and the three handles so you can easliy pick it up and carry it on your back. I actually just googled antique spanish shepherds chair and I found other similars. So who knows if it is for birthing or taking care of sheep. Interesting that Women's MOST painful part of giving birth, actually had chairs that ADDED to that PAIN !!! Geeesh, nothing comfy about these torture devices!

I'm not sure how the female anatomy work... but i assume the women puts her toes through the holes to the left and right of the seat
Probably not her toes but her heels. Or her hands to have something to hold on.

Excuse my ignorance, but how did women give birth on these things?
By sitting on them obviously. Giving birth lying down is a rather modern invention and actually makes birth harder due to gravity working against you. It only came about so doctors could see better what's going on.
