Drop whatever you're doing, we have a situation in here! A stay-at-home mother has posted a picture of the 'impossible to open' cupboard and she needs your tips to open it without destroying these precious porcelain plates.

'A cupboard that can never be opened,' - read the caption. Of course, you can never throw words like 'never' online because soon after posting, the army of kind-hearted internauts came pouring in (16,000 reactions and 456 comments) to help this lady with getting her plates to safety.

What would you do in this situation? Post your answers below!

Update: The photo was actually taken after an earthquake in the Tottori Prefecture on October 21st, in a hotel owned by the Kishida family.

It is a matter of economic, if the plates are cheap open the door. If the plates are irreplaceable smash the glass on the right.

If necessary and useful for more security smash the other glasses above or below the critical one. Seems not to be some specially expensive glass. From below you might have the chance to take additional measure to prevent the dishes from falling down while you get things right and stable from above or right side.

If you decide to smash the window, hold the left pane firmly as you smash the right pane. If you do not, the loose vibration against the glass could make them shift and fall anyway

Dominic Shirazi

Let them fall, let them break. Make them better and fix them like the Japanese: Kintsugi (or kintsukuroi) is a Japanese method for repairing broken ceramics with a special lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum. The philosophy behind the technique is to recognize the history of the object and to visibly incorporate the repair into the new piece instead of disguising it.

Look at the latch. This is a sliding door. If you slide the door cautiously you should be able to open it just enough to reach a hand in and support the plates. The glass will slide over them and hold the in place while you do this. Then you can open it the rest of the way. As long as the door doesn't swing open, it it looks like it doesn't, this shouldn't be hard. (Done it before.)

I was looking at the picture and I was thinking that it looks like it has sliding door. If this is so, the thing is simple and for sure, already resolved a long time ago. You just need to open the door on the right. Maybe the owner posted the photo just as a curiosity and because it looked nice.

Choose me, no regrets. 1. Shut the cabinet with duct tape (make suke the door won't move). 2. Drill two small holes at the glass on the right (be careful about vibration). Hole height no. 1: the lowest bowl, hole height no. 2: middle bowl (slightly lower than the horizontal wood). 3. Fill in hole 1 with sand until sand height reach hole 1, then shut hole 1. Fill hole 2 until you feel secured enough. 4. Break/ cut the glass on top of the plates. Take them out carefully from above. Perimeter secured. If the plates are so valuable, make sure don't put that high next time. I may not be able to help you next time, it’s hard (and illegal) to backdate time travel. Seriously, because Trump made a wall in front of time travel entrance so we can’t backdate to vote his opponents at the past (your future 2020 presidential election.). Think this is a joke? Don't smash the glass it might loosen more plates.. Simply use a glass cutter and make a circular hole so you may re-arrange the dishes so they will not drop when you open the door.

If you smash the glass the vibration will make them fall. NO DON'T DO IT. Get a glass cutter from the hardware store and cut a hole large enough for your are to fit through. The cut the hole just under the bottom left corner glass, then reach in and crab the bowels that are leaning up against the glass. Then you can slowly push them back up on to the shelf. Maker sure your right hand is pushing up against the wood frame to keep the door flush against the shelves. Now you won't have a problem with the other bowels or plates slipping down. Problem solved.

I would unfold a wire coat hanger, bend the last 3 inches of it into a gentle curve, hold the door so it would not open more than a quarter inch, feed the wire in, hook the bottom bowl, gently slide upward and keep at it until I had manipulated all the bowls back onto the shelf. I would keep working the wire until no plates or bowls were leaning on or toward the door, then I would try opening the door another quarter inch. If everything stayed in place I would slowly open the door and gently rearrange the dishes.

If the cupboard is movable lay it down. If not asses which would cost more, or which is worth more to you. If the dishes are sentimental and essentially priceless to you as they are a family heirloom, then brace the door shut and remove the panes of glass above and below and have someone hold the bowls they can reach from the bottom up while another person lifts the remaining bowls to safety. If the dishes were inexpensive and meaningless (which i doubt as this is a plea for help) Open the door with a bag ready to try and catch them so they do not shatter all over the floor.

You need two people one I standing on a stool or kneeling on the counter. Open the door only abt 3inches so the one one the counter can reach in and stop the dishes from falling continue to slowly open the door as the other person gets another hand into the cabinet and if possible his chest to catch the falling dishes with his upper body. Then steady the dishes and begin handing them to the one who opened the doorvone at a time.

The door slides, so using your right hand slide it open enough to slip in your left hand and hold up the plates. They're shoved up against the glass so if you go slow it might work. Then when they're kind of under control slide in your right hand and support the rest while sliding the door wide with your right elbow. OR, get someone to help and while you slowly do the above maneuver have the second person hold a blanket underneath, just in case.

Looks like a sliding door. You need a small child or person with small hands. Slide the door slowly and have little hands reach in and push them back up. If it's not actually a sliding door, I'd suggest jimmying out the pane of glass while pushing in slightly to keep things from falling then slide the pane of glass upward while reaching in under to push them up. You'll just need some epoxy to replace the pane of glass once all is settled. if it's one solid sheet of glass for the whole door and it's not sliding door, then I'd go with the drilling a hole suggestion made by others.

I can't tell if this door pulls open or if it slides? If this cabinet door pulls open, two people working together could save a majority of these dishes . As one pulls the door open quickly, the other reaches into the gap quickly and prevents the larger portion of the dishes from falling, and the person opening the door quickly gets in and assists. Speed and coordination of the two parties is the key to success!

Wise thing to do about this situation is, Cut a portion underneath the plates and remove a block ontop, you have to put anything underneath that plate to avoid unpredictable outcome. You Either have someone hold it from below or you do it while someone is taking away the plates from the open space above. You Need two people to do that :')

Have someone go to the very top of the cabinet, and put a hole through the top, reach down and remove the dishes that are falling. This will be a lot more economical, than letting the dishes fall and break. No one gets to see the very top of the cabinet anywat, so it can be repaired and no one would know that there had been a hole put in the top.

If the plates are expensive; Use a glass cutter to cut a hole within the edge of the place that is resting on the glass, so that is still is resting on the glass but your hand van fit through the hole. Insert your hand and hold back the plates, open the door a little while holding back the plates, insert your other hand and catch and push back the plates :)

The whole idea is to get to open the door without breaking the plates. It doesn't matter whether the plates are cheap or not. The second part of the solution won't work either. It should appear obvious why. The plates are ALL holding each other in place. Removing one would disturb the entire stack sending many of them crashing down.

Cut the glass of the top part of the panel below the plates, place some cushions in the cupboard. Cut the glass in the top part of the cupboard and take out the plates one by by one. If the plates were precious they would not have been stacked so high. Cut your losses, put ablanket and pillow in a big bucket on a chair, open the door slowly till you can get a hand in to save the rest and hope the falling ones land softly enough. Get a broom to sweep any pieces, gain access to the rest of the cupboard and do not stack them so high in future.

The handle indicates it is a sliding door. Carefully slide the door to the left until maximum clearance is achieved. Then fill the shelf below to the brim with fabric and other wadding material. Take a thin plastic sheet, stiff enough the work your way to the dishes, and wiggle it between the glass and the dishes. Then slowly move the door to the right, gradually exposing the edge of the dishes. Once far enough, you will then be able to carefully remove dishes starting from the rear without worrying they might fall. Once you get the ones which have fallen forward, you should easily be able to grab more on the shelf.
