Cat Owner Fakes His Death To See How His Kitty Would React, Doesn’t Expect Reaction Like This

From the very first day a pet arrives at our house, it becomes a part of the family, one more new member that we unconditionally love. The same, of course, happened with a cat named Sparta – a 10-year-old Bengal mix who was adopted in the summer of 2007.

Sparta might seem like an unusual cat – he likes wrestling, playing fetch, stalking and being held like a baby. Since he loves cuddling so much, his owner once asked himself a question: “What would my cat do if I suddenly died?” To find this out, he decided to fake his death in front of Sparta and see how would he react. Luckily, he got all this on video, so we can witness this priceless moment too. Scroll down to see it for yourself!

This is Sparta, a 10-year-old Bengal mix a.k.a. The Mean Kitty

Sparta loves stalking, wrestling, crunchy toys, playing fetch and being held like a baby

One day, his owner just naturally raised himself a question…

“What would my cat do if I suddenly died?”

I think Sparta could probably sense that you were okay and was just wondering why you were behaving that way. Cats can sense other people's heartbeats, so say you heart had actually stopped, Sparta's reaction would be very different. She can feel your heartbeat through her paws on the floor, and the rhythm your breaths make, she can smell 'life' and not 'death'. And I think a cat's hearing sense are also stronger compared to a human's so she can hear your heartbeats. She heard you make a noise before falling so she came to check it out and saw nothing was wrong, probably thought that you're sleeping on the floor for a change and was wondering why.

I wrote that comment before I finished watching the video. So since she noticed nothing was wrong, she just decided 'f**k it' and laid down with you. But the best part was in the end when she looked up at you when you asked 'really dude?'. And I love her cute little meows, reminds me of my own two cats. Just to let you know, this was the video that earned you one more subscriber on Youtube!

Ummmm, I may be wrong here but I think animals can sense when a person is dead. Playing dead means nothing to them as long as they can still sense that you are alive. This experiment would have made more sense if somehow you made your heart stop beating for a while and stopped breathing. Then we would see how he would react. Otherwise now you just confused the poor kitty, who decided to just join you and play dead too :)

That was a very foolish thing to do. Cats are very smart. What would you have done after the cat had gotten a defibrillator and put 600V in you? And wouldn't you be red in the face when an ambulance and the police show up after the he calls 911?

In what alternate reality does this cat not know you're dead? You do realize the your cat sees you asleep every night when she's awake. As far as she's concerned you spend large stretches of time being boring as hell. This time you chose to be boring on the floor. She currently assumed you'd be up soon. You're warm and breathing and smell the same as always. You can add dramatic soundtracks to the video all you want, your cat wasn't fooled.

Cats aren't stupid. They have a much better sense of hearing and smell than people do. She could tell you weren't dead. She could probably even tell that there wasn't anything wrong with you. To her, you're just on the floor, for some strange reason so, as long as you're down there, you can give her a belly rub. In cat logic, she makes perfect sense.

I don't really get this whole 'fake your death and see how your pet reacts' thing. I mean, I'm fairly sure that your cat would be able to sense that you were breathing, warm, and had a pulse. Besides, they'd probably think you were sleeping…Sparta seemed pretty confused the entire time, and if you were dying, he would tell. At the end, it almost looked like he was copying the owner in lying down…

It WAS mean to upset the cat. Would you fake your death in front of a child to see his reaction? Sparta was very concerned at first, but quickly realized you were OK. He should have gotten even by spraying on your head, or peeing in your ear. Then, if you didn't move at that point, he might get really worried.

she did seem concerned... for most of it she was checking you out. she couldnt do much so she did what a cat does. even so, how a cat measures death is not by you collapsing on the floor, its when you dissapear that they freak out. my grandma had 2 cats, and they were with her when she died, so i know its very traumatizing when your person dissapears and doesnt come back. and not just because no one is there to feed it either. they feel! its believable!

Completely agree, Shruti. Cats can smell death. She knew nothing was really wrong. The guy is a superb actor. No sign of breathing at all at his "death" scene. This is extremely hard to do. As a trained actress I remember how hard this is to effect, and especially after a dramatic fall. Very impressive.

Yep. I played a corpse on a gurney once. I didn't have to memorize any lines, but it's very difficult to breathe very shallowly to make it look as if you are dead.

It looks like she was worried for about the first half of the video because she was confused. She walked around you and examined you quite a bit before laying down, so I would guess that she was checking to see if you were okay, examined you, noticed your heart beating, diaphragm expanding, or something of that nature, and assumed you must be sleeping. She decided to take a nap next to you.

The cat surely knew he wasn't dead. They know when something is really off. My cat was never stress about anything we could do, but one day I really though I was going to die cause something was stuck in my throat and my cat meow like crazy the entire time, I never saw her that frantic. In the end I manage to start breathing again and my cat didn't leave me for the rest of the day. She was also really sensitive when I was feeling down and would always try to cuddle the pain aways.

opossums play dead when threatened, but unlike humans opossums can actually slow their heartbeat enough that they seem to play dead.. in fact their entire body goes into a petrified state and for all tends and purposes they look dead to predators. Humans cant do this naturally, and MOST animals have better senses than we do and can hear breathing, heart beats, and micro movements. These senses are what give cats their great hunting abilities.

They're easy going creatures. I'm easy going too that's why i love them. Some cat lovers really try to persuade themselves that their cats will grieve over them. Come on..it doesn't work that way.

Even though I like dogs more than cats and I somewhat agree with you (dogs may care more if you die than some cats) I'm just gonna let you know that the cat probably would have reacted differently if it sensed the owner was ACTUALLY dead, the animal was clearly worried until it figured out that it's owner was still alive and breathing. If the owner hadn't been alive or breathing then the cat probably would have been way more worried and probably wouldn't have been so quick to just lay down and ignore the owner

This just broke my heart. I adopted a 15 year old kitty who spent 3 days alone with his owner who died suddenly-- she had had him from a kitten. He was traumatized. The family wanted to euthanize him, but left him alive and alone in the house for 2 weeks (with dry food and water) while they sorted it out. He is still a nervous boy, but we love him to the moon. I know you meant well, but no laughing matter for me. :-(

Sparta felt that his owner´s been faking, cats feel it when their owner died for real, as well as they can feel the breathing of the owner, the heartbeat, the blood circulating and the hormonesin the body of (any) live persons, this is why he didn´t seem to care, his little meows were like: "C´m on daddy, get up again now, feed me", but I´ve heard stories about cats who´ve been sitting by their really deceased owners (heart attack, stroke or whatever) for days and grieving, our cats ain´t dumb, no faking allowed!!!

We have two centres of EM energy - the head and much stronger from the heart. Animals can sense this EM energy - so Sparta knew full well you weren't dead. I just have to call out "meditation time" to my cat and she comes running to curl up between my knees [Lotus position] where she purrs and then falls asleep. She loves it, because the EM I put out then is very relaxed. Animals see the world in ways we can't. Sparta is smarter than Master !! :-)

I had a Bengal mix and she could sense when I was going to have a seizure. She would constantly walk round my legs tripping me up until I sat down then she would would sit on my lap. When I came round she would still be there. Sometimes I would have scratches on my arms or neck. I think that was when I was just before my seizure and had tried to stand. She was an amazing cat. I quickly got used to what she was trying to tell me and would lie on the floor until it was over. No more scratches. 😻😻

Sparta did every caring thing! She touched his hand like what's the matter with you. 2. she looked at the living person filming and twice like should I be alarmed? 3. Then the TELL TALE SIGN, she went near his a**s to see if he were dead. 4. Not smelling anything , she did as the Roman did and laid down, playing HIS game.

Nonsense. A cat will know if you are dead by your body warmth . Rest assured as a last resort if you did die, and kitty couldn't get food they would eat you - starting with the eyes!

Animals can smell when you're breathing. And laying on the floor pretending to be dead isn't much different than laying in bed sleeping. So the cat knows he isn't dead for sure. But yeah, it's a funny video.

in all retospect, this was a very poorly thought out expierement, and you should do more reasearch before attempting a study, especially one that involves any kind of living thing. I can see clearly that sparta loves you very much, and would be devastated if something actually happened to you. good luck!

Cats pick up vibes. My guess is that Sparta didn't get the "Daddy's in trouble" vibe, hence the "rub my belly" roll at the end :) My cat snuggles up to me whenever I'm upset or feeling down. Every single time. He went nuts when I was doing yoga one time because I was in "downward dog" and not paying attention to his scenting.

Let's face it ladies and gentlemen, cat owners aren't the sharpest tools in the shed! Anyone can see that the cat was mocking his dumbarse owner while mumbling under that fishie breath .... something along the lines of "do it again pencil d**k and you'll be the next fresh batch of kitty litter"

These senses are what give cats their great hunting abilities.

eventually, cats would eat the soft tissue of your body to survive, lips, cheeks, etc.

a cat will eat your soft tissue in order to survive so if you have cats make sure you install a cat door in case you die or not have an open casket funeral...if you have cats.

Pretty sure that if Sparta thought you'd died he'd start eating you. Remember: to a cat, dead = food.

Yeah, I’ve done the same thing with various generations of cats. Overall, the reaction was about like this - in some cases, they didn’t even come look at me. They just kept sleeping.

Really? no one wants to admit that cats just don't give a f**k. I've had many cats they do love you as long as you're there and if you're not, they don't give a f**k about it either. They're easy going creatures. I'm easy going too that's why i love them. Some cat lovers really try to persuade themselves that their cats will grieve over them. Come on..it doesn't work that way.

Did you actually think your cat would care? It's a cat. Get a dog if you want an animal that gets upset if you die.

I think that the cat could feel that you were not really dead. I think that if you would be really dead, the cat would feel it, and he would respond differently.

Of course Sparta knew you were still alive. They're senses are SO much stronger than hours. You would have to be really dead for the experiment to work, in which case, for you it would still be a mystery. Kitty is certainly a good sport living with a goofball like you :-)

Cats and other animals are completely aware if you are OK or faking it. I felt he said, Oh, OK we're playing dead now, hence the rolling over with legs up. GREAT cat!
