Mastering contemporary emojis is hard work; in order to use them efficiently, one has to be fluent in Internet culture, and that's not something you become overnight.
But some old people are having trouble with even the most basic emojis. Like the face with tears of joy -- hysterical laughter -- which they use to express sadness. In their defense, it's quite easy to mix the two in digital form if you don't give it much thought or your eyesight is weakening. However, receiving bad news from someone who appears to be so happy about it, they're happy-crying is wrong on so, so many levels.

Prayer is less than useless, it’s detrimental. Scientific studies have shown that petitionary prayer has the same outcome as random chance. Please pray to regrow the limbs of an amputee. See how that works out for you. Prayers didn’t stop the holocaust. There are children born in parts of Africa, born to Christian parents and some born to Muslim parents, and some of those children are born starving and or born with AIDS. The children pray and pray and pray to your god and your god does nothing while many suffer and die in ways we can’t even comprehend. Why would god answer your prayers, but not the prayers of starving children? Prayer seems deeply selfish to me. Two hands actually working do more than a million folded in prayer.
For some it looks like wailing and crying - intense grief. Kinda makes sense.
Or may be your grandma is super happy that she doesn't have to meet you. JK :D

This is actually sad and not funny...Hopefully every one of those "old" people was told what the true meaning of the emoji is, so they correct it.
I agree. But I also see this as a failure of the emoji developers. If you make something people misunderstand a lot, you need to improve it.

I understand old people sometimes use the wrong emoji but usually the context of the message makes it clear what they really tried to say. Emojis are a language they don't understand. However, there is no reason to give a rude answer to these seniors as it happened a few times in above screenshots.
and young people misuse language / slang etc all the time too, because they don't know what other generations do. Mocking someone for not knowing everything about *your* generation, rather than include and educate them, is basically just being a jerk. (and this goes for every generation of jerks out there)
I don't think the intention here is to be mean against old people, its just that these messages are so inappropriate that its hilarious (at least for me)

It might sound a bit twisted but deep inside I'd want them have at least the faintest smile or drop of humour in the saddest moment. It's the only power one is left with before joining that dreadful club.
... I mean sense of humor and gratefulness (yea I know that sounds a bit ridiculous when a family member is dying of cancer) is what got me through.....but that emoji doesn't exactly capture sense of humor.

Old? I don’t know if that’s the only cause... or even at all relevant to all people. Some devices have very different graphics for the same emoji. In this case, I’m not sure THAT is even relevant. Especially with the big huge laughing spheres. How can you not see that as laughing?
Ya know...I'm old (older than 50, less than 65!) and I know which emoji is which. I may not know a lot, but don't go lumping all us old folks altogether.
So basically the entire post is about people using the one single emoji in a wrong way. And it's not even funny. Rather sad actually

most people don't cry when laughing, so logically speaking, it's not unreasonable to equate "tears" with "sadness". "laughed so hard, I cried" isn't that common an experience.
