While there are many reasons to keep your faith in humanity, there are some moments when we lose it completely. There are truly terrible people in the world who do God-awful things to others. Focusing just on them without seeing the kindness around us would be pessimistic, but it’s important to be aware of just how deep some people’s evil really goes. In short, being aware of the darker aspects of life gives us a more nuanced picture.

And there’s hardly a better place to see some things that might make your blood boil than the ‘Extremely Infuriating’ subreddit. It’s a 91.7k-member-strong online community that has been showing the internet the dark side of humanity all the way since 2012. Scroll down below for some of the worst things you’re likely to read all week. Let us know in the comments which of these things shocked you the most, Pandas. And if you’re up for it, tell us how you personally deal with negative news like this.

(Warning: this list really isn’t for you if you have high blood pressure and if you’d like to relax. For those that need some sunshine in your lives, we suggest you check out Bored Panda’s recent article about silly animals doing cute nonsense things right here.)

Bored Panda wanted to understand why we're so fascinated by some of the darker aspects of humanity and why being angry all the time might be bad for us, so we reached out to Suzanne Degges-White, a Licensed Counselor, Professor, and Chair at the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University.

“When it comes to hearing information about the darker aspects of humanity, our brains experience greater stimulation when we hear stories of depravity than of kindness. It also has a ‘feel-good aspect’ for some folks as it normalizes and minimizes their own dark aspects or negative traits,” the professor explained to Bored Panda why negative, dark, evil-related content might appeal to people.

It's not her landlord but the assisted living facility that wanted her gone. I mean, what is she supposed to do, sitting in a wheelchair and probably having no place to go? There's got to be rules in place for cases like that?

According to Professor Degges-White from Northern Illinois University, information about the darker aspects of humanity allows the audience to create comparisons to their own behavior. As a result, we feel better about those traits that we might not like in ourselves.

“Whether it's greed, anger, promiscuity, and so on, when we hear just how bad someone else has been, it can make us feel better about our own tendencies towards the dark side traits. It also lets us imagine vicariously what it would be like to be ‘that bad.’”

She continued: “It's kind of like watching all the true crime shows—we enjoy being scared, we enjoy seeing into the minds of people doing things we never would, and it's exciting and novel to see just how far people can go in terms of their dark sides.”

The professor warned us that living in constant anger (e.g. being angry at how unjust the world is all the time) can have very negative effects on our bodies.

“Constant anger can lead to metabolic diseases, cardiovascular problems, and digestive issues. For some people, health concerns are the reason that they may learn to let go of anger,” she said.

“While being angry can lead to social change and begin to topple barriers and other aspects of injustice, we also know that anger isn't going to be the best choice to build alliances or convince others of the need for change. Finding common ground is essential in making true, collaborative change. This requires us to let go of anger, whether that is finding a way to sublimate it or overcome it, or just put it aside for the time being,” the professor explained that anger, while useful, isn’t the answer to everything. It has a place and a time.

Despite the fact that the r/extremelyinfuriating subreddit is all about sharing and commenting on infuriating content, the community isn’t about directing this anger against the perpetrators of terrible and heinous acts. It’s not about becoming a vigilante.

The moderators stress time and time again that the subreddit isn’t about starting witch hunts or wishing someone else harm. As such, you should avoid posting any identifying information that could lead to someone getting hurt. (Even if you might personally think that Karma might need a helping hand.)

“This subreddit is about things that are extremely infuriating. This often includes terrible people doing terrible things. But witch hunts and doxxing will not be tolerated, and anyone who provides or attempts to discover the identity (including, but not limited to, real name, Reddit username, Twitter handle, etc.) of anyone involved in a submission will be banned,” the mods of r/extremelyinfuriating explain.

The team behind the subreddit also points out that disagreements are fine, but hostility and insults are definitely not. It’s vital to stay civil even when talking about emotional topics. Taking part in polite discussion lies at the core of the online group, even if the subject matter is extremely infuriating to most people.

What’s more, the mods point out that it’s never okay to wish harm on someone. “You can express your frustration or dislike for someone without advocating for them to be physically harmed or murdered,” they write.

The school did end up reversing its decision (5-4 vote), but stated that they were afraid that once the federal government was in charge of feeding the kids it would have the ultimate authority and not the local school boards. So, they would rather keep their power than ensure that no kids go hungry. That sounds about right for many of the decisions made by school boards across the USA these past 2 years. As a teacher, I absolutely love this new program and hope it stays. I no longer have to quietly figure out who in my class isn't getting to eat and then sneak them food so their classmates don't know they aren't bringing their own lunch. I have fewer kids complaining about being hungry throughout the day, we instead get to focus on what we are actually there for, the learning.

My mom used to be you. She did not want to start any lectures, until she was convinced that everyone was comfortable (that is, that no one is cold in the classroom, and that everyone is full and that no one is thirsty), she justified this by explaining briefly at each session of the professors at the beginning how students learn best if they are not distracted by irrelevant things that can be eliminated before the start of each lecture.

Thank you for being there for our children. I can't imagine how hard it was before the pandemic, during the lock downs and virtual learning. And even now. I agree completely with what you are saying. I had friends who only ate the 2 small meals during school hours and wouldn't eat during the evenings and weekends. This is a message that thrybcsre more about the bottom line than the future of our world. These kids are given very little help in life and people wonder why they can't dig themselves out as they grow up and are stuck in the same cycle their parents were in. If we valued education more than the money that they refuse to put in then it would be amazing where these kids take us in the future. I am so sorry because I know that you don't get paid enough for all of your hard work and dedication only to be slapped with more and more polices that aren't designed to help kids. Like the year ahead lesson reviews or the proposed rule of not talking to your students about their lives outside of school. I know that teachers see heart breaking things every day and can help by getting enough information to report in abuse or letting an at risk child know that at least someone cares about them enough to see what's giving in their lives. Sorry for the ramble. Just thank you.

A little research and you learn, 1. It's not Bidens Free lunch program. It's the federally funded free lunch program that's been in place for 40 years. Two, they had a problem with people taking the free lunch for their kids who didn't need it, thus causing a shortage and kids missing out. This district implemented their own free lunch program that feeds needy kids and prevents abuse of a broken system. Please do a little bit of investigation and not just read BS headlines like this.

So, what about the kids who can't afford lunch? I guess they will get either spoiled food, stay hungry, or start stealing just to have lunch all because someone thinks it'll spoil them? Sounds like the ppl who make this decision never missed a meal or couldn't afford food. You know, food is essential to life. It's not an "extra" and kids deserve to not have to worry where their next meal is coming from... Much less whether the meal is coming at all! Ppl make me sick sometimes!

Have they seen the free lunch? Trust me, no one grabbing it is getting spoiled. It’s lower than basic staple. If kids were getting free hibachi or chipotle burrito wraps for lunch, yeah then that’s being spoiled…. A ham and cheese or turkey sandwich with carrots will do. But the free food is even less appealing so where does spoiled come from… maybe the food itself 🤣

Yes let's make sure kids that might also not be able to eat at home are kept from being spolied because of a guaranteed breakfast and lunch Monday thru Friday. Then go home and hardly eat on the weekends. This is yet another example of people who know Jack about kids, social problems in their communities, and how to help them become successful healthy adults who contribute to society in taxes over time way more than they would cost to eat at school. School is supposed to be a place where kids are safe and comfortable. It also reminds me of the story about how removing tax from feminine hygiene products will just encourage women and girls to have more periods.

Ok, I'm a Republican but this is just child-ish. If the meals they're serving are so wonderful that children would get spoiled getting it for 5 out of 21 meals (LESS than a pitiful 25%) then it must be what the school board itself eats. And the school board doesn't want to share. I'm against most government freebies but this is just wrong. Breakfast before, optional light snack, lunch, school-end snack. No charge.

Imagine... There's a school administration out there somewhere who thinks feeding kids who can't afford food to be spoiled... By food.

This is the type of stuff angers me. Growing children need food to nurture their bodies and minds. Why should school kids have to pay for their lunches when prisons feed prisoners 3 meals a day?

Nature vs Nurture... Are parents literally out here RAISING monsters? I want to see the minutes of that meeting? WHO said "next on the agenda, no more free lunch because the poor kids are getting spoiled by eating" WHO?

How do you ever develop the mindset that someone wanting to not starve to death is being spoiled? Most 6 year olds don't wake up entitled and lead strikes outside of schools demanding free carrot sticks and broccoli.

I guarantee this is a “pro-life” school board run by a republican majority. All life is precious, and we should protect an undeveloped clump of cells, but living, breathing, hungry children are seen as “spoiled” for wanting to have full bellies, and access to basic human needs. I hate this so much.

The kids are eating free if their parents buy their food so how is this spoiling them? Just an excuse to cut off funds.

Shouldn't be permitted to do that. If it's determined that kids in that school need that, because for many of them who otherwise wouldn't get breakfast have a human right to food.

"I don't want kids to become spoiled so now they aren't even guaranteed food" Um babe I know life isn't fair but forcing the 6 year olds to go hungry is child abuse when you just got told you're being given the option by the federal government.

Wisconsin - where a jury found a murderer not guilty, where the judge is an out and active racist. Yep, it all adds up. Children will be spoiled when they are fed. Keep them hungry and scared.

Something that can’t be denied is that many people have a strange fascination with the darker aspects of humanity. Bored Panda spoke to psychologist Lee Chambers about this in detail, with regards to the popularity of the true-crime genre, as well as why people enjoy viewing media that portrays violence and evil.

"When considering why the darker side of humanity and entertainment are so compelling, we have to first look at our evolutionary journey as human beings. For the majority of our existence, we were prey and always hyperaware of threats to our safety, which created a negativity bias that we are drawn towards," the psychologist began.

Kid Destroys $15,000 LEGO Sculpture An Hour After New Exhibit Opens

Jeff-Thy-Meme-God Report

As strange and uncomfortable as it sounds, seeing evil things done by and to people who are not us while we’re safe at home in front of the screen has a certain “comforting element” to it.

"It can take us on an emotional rollercoaster, have us trying to solve the puzzle and test our fear in a controlled way. The permission to explore evil is powerful, as we so rarely get the chance elsewhere, and in itself, it is healthy and normal in moderation," he said, stressing that moderation is the key. Consuming too much negativity and violence in the media can affect us in ways that we don’t want.

"The challenge we face is the fact that consuming too much of this can desensitize us, and cause us to become less empathetic to the suffering of others, more fearful of our own environment, and potentially be more likely to use aggression ourselves. It can also cause us to be triggered by our own previous adverse experiences, make it harder to manage our own emotional balance, and increase our stress levels, so moderating our consumption is something we should have front of mind, even when we get embroiled in the latest series that is pulling us in."

According to the psychologist, consuming media like television shows can be a way to relax, explore ourselves in new contexts, and to start conversations with our social circles. However, we have to seriously dial back on this type of entertainment when we see it impacting our life.

Causing more harm than good. If the owners can’t fix it themselves they’ll need to call someone out, that’s another vehicle on the road. If the tire is damaged that’s another tire on the trash heap and another one manufactured to replace it. Then of course you have all the man hours wasted. People are idiots, they don’t think.

Unfortunately I know. You slide the glass to the edge of the table, over a bowl or something to catch that much water, retrieve the bills, clean the table. Dry the bills thoroughly at home. Next table. Had it happen. Not even original. This was twenty years ago. Shoot...I even had one guy pit the remaining scramble eggs in the water. No biggie. You see it , you remember them.

“As soon as it starts to invade your sleep, impact what you eat, and how much you move your body, it starts subtracting from the fundamentals that keep us in an optimal place as human beings," he said that we should check in with ourselves to see if we’re not spending far too much time in front of a screen.

"A lack of sleep compounds in a variety of negative ways, and we are well aware of the challenges we face as a society around eating and movement. We also need to consider the mental and psychological benefits of watching some TV and taking ownership; being in control of what you watch is a great place to be, so ensure you are the master of the TV and don't let the TV become the master of you," he said.

This appears to be totally untrue: Manufacturing company Intersurgical says it had no intention of making a threat. Managing director Charles Bellm issued a statement: "Just to confirm that recent reports from Italy are totally incorrect, we were contacted at the end of last week for manufacturing details of a valve accessory but could not supply these due to medical manufacturing regulations, we have categorically not threatened to sue anyone involved. The valve is an accessory supplied as part of a CPAP Hood system which alone costs a few euros. Our Italian company has been doing their utmost to supply the hospitals at this time and have been supplying these free of charge in many cases to use with the CPAP Hoods. It is very disappointing that in the current climate this incorrect information is circulating, our focus as a company is to be able to supply the hospitals that require these and many other vital products and we are making every effort to ensure we can do so.
