Extraordinary Photos: The Essence Of The Dinka Tribe In Sudan
Photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher spent over 30 years taking photos of ceremonies, rituals and the daily life of African tribal peoples. These extraordinary images tell the story of the Dinka tribe in Sudan.
The Dinka people vary their lifestyle by season – in the rainy season they live in permanent savannah settlements and raise grain crops like millet, while in the dry season they herd cattle along rivers throughout their region. Their lives are very closely intertwined with those of their cattle – at their coming of age ceremony, young Dinka men are given an ox, and that ox’s name becomes a part of their own name. As it grows, they also shape their ox’s long horns into different forms.

Yes they are beautiful, breathtaking and and, but if we do not do anything, they will dissapear, they are endangered already and Sudan is a hot spot.

By watching this clip it has brought me to a place whereby, I feel I have nothing in this western life but a hypocritical life of not accepting our beauty that was given to us. Also, watching how they are raised and the life they live tells me that we should take a lesson from their book of life...I could go on and on.
simply amazing! thank you for these photos. the nature, the feelings and the bodies are in perfect harmony.
My opinion; These are average at best. They use the most average photography techniques - silhouette, sunset, and basic portraiture framing. In fact there's nothing much here that has high level composition. Most of all there's very little human connection, sophisticated display of the human form, or unique information presented. I suspect the only reason they get attention is because of a 'look at the strange black people' voyeurism that's so common across Africa.
Hey there Christian, I'm curious if you watched the accompanying video? Because though whoever selected the photos for the article may not have fulfilled your aesthetic, you may appreciate many in the video. You may also appreciate learning that these women have been documenting, learning about, and advocating for the protection of many indigenous tribes across Africa for over 35 years. As for our [misplaced?] "fascination" with African people, I daresay it makes sense that we would long to see people who still have their sense of community, everyday art, and direct connection with the earth and its cycles. If we had any indigenous cultures left in our Western world, we might not have such a longing, but we've really cut ourselves off from these values. Anyway, I admire your skepticism and discernment – I am just trying to share a little more that I gleaned from this pithy presentation that may make it seem more valuable to you.
