Mistakes and accidents are unavoidable. They're part of our lives. But don't worry, this isn't an insurance ad. It's a piece on the subreddit That Looked Expensive.’

It's an online community, where people share photos, gifs, and videos of mistakes, accidents, catastrophes, and disasters that cost a small fortune.

We're talking a supercar storage catching fire, children knocking over a $70K sculpture, and many more hilarious, er, I mean, costly mishaps. Continue scrolling to check them out and take a look at Bored Panda's earlier article on the subreddit after you're done, too!

Looks bad because the front axle has detached, but that will repair, particularly if the car is sufficiently valuable, insurance will pay. Just makes me want to cry though.

Value would go up in my book, but I also know a painting that cost that much is just being used to launder money.

This was just inevitable. I remember reading about this when it first happened. Just stupid on the artist's and gallery's parts. The art supplies were part of the installation but just dumb. They should have been prop pieces. Geez.

I read about that the day after it happened, and the funny part was how art critics thought that the added gestures really made the painting a lot better.

It did!! When I saw it I couldn't understand what they were bitching about. Not only did it add to its artistic merit, the provenance went through the roof. What a story!

Something isn't on the up and up here. A 500K painting THAT accessible with supplies THAT accessible?? Sounds more like an exhibition piece that included interaction but not necessarily by unknown guests but rather parties chosen by the artist.

This $500,000 painting looks like it WAS made by the audience. This is more about the artist as a product than the artwork, isn’t it? Whose painting is this?

That's an expensive painting? In materials alone, perhaps - but it's not particularly appealing. I bet that's why the couple thought it was a free-for-all art work. My grandmother was a professional artist - tiny pictures through to some genuinely massive pieces. The painting was always dry BEFORE it arrived at the gallery. There is zero reason for painting supplies to be out, let alone unsupervised.

It's abstract. Have to see a "before" pic to judge damage- they might've actually improved it.

Why would you ASSUME that? I'm going to leave a lawn mower in my front yard and see if anyone wants to participate in cutting it. Or a bucket of soap water next to my car in case anyone wants to participate in washing it.

Because often art galleries do encourage participation. Maybe one of the other exhibitions in the gallery invited participation and these people thought the invite extended to this painting. Leaving art gear next to it - I would think the same.
