Underwater Restaurant Has Been Completed In Norway And It Looks Out Of This World
The first, the largest and the most research-friendly. Under is the world’s biggest underwater restaurant with a total seating capacity for 100 guests, it’s the first of its kind in Europe, and it also functions as a research center for marine biology. The Snøhetta-designed dining experience started operating just yesterday but people are already adding it to their Norway destination lists.

In Norwegian, ‘under’ means both ‘below’ and ‘wonder.’ Half-sunken into the sea, the building’s 111-foot long monolithic form breaks the surface of the water to rest on the seabed below. Taking it a step further, the structure is built to eventually fully integrate into its marine environment, as the roughness of the concrete shell will function as an artificial reef, welcoming limpets and kelp to inhabit it.

Thick concrete walls allow it to withstand pressure and shock from the rugged sea conditions and, like a sunken periscope, the restaurant’s massive panoramic window offers a view of the seabed as it changes throughout the seasons and varying weather conditions.

“Under is a natural progression of our experimentation with boundaries,” Snøhetta Founder and Architect, Kjetil Trædal Thorsen said. “As a new landmark for Southern Norway, Under proposes unexpected combinations of pronouns and prepositions, and challenges what determines a person’s physical placement in their environment.”

“In this modern architecture building, you may find yourself underwater, over the seabed, between land and sea. This will offer you new perspectives and ways of seeing the world, both beyond and beneath the waterline.”

The restaurant focuses to create a fine dining experience based on high quality, locally-sourced produce, emphasizing on sustainable wildlife capture. Danish expatriate Nicolai Ellitsgaard from the acclaimed restaurant Måltid in Kristiansand is the Head Chef, bringing an international, 16-person kitchen team with experience from top Michelin restaurants.

In Norway, Lindesnes is known for its intense weather conditions, which can change from calm to stormy several times a day. Upon arriving at the site, the visitor’s impressions of the unruly outdoors quickly dissolve as they are ushered through into the hushed, oak-clad foyer. The rich interior design creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere inside the restaurant.

As a metaphor for descending from land to sea, textile-clad ceiling panels reference the colors of a sunset dropping into the ocean, accompanying one climbing down the stairs. Moreover, the unique design of the finely woven ceiling panels provides the building with a serene ambiance.

The furniture perfectly represents the philosophy of the whole project as well; to build solid structures for the future without compromising the natural beauty that lies inherent in the raw materials.

But Under isn’t just a restaurant. The building also houses a marine research facility. It welcomes interdisciplinary research teams that will be able to study marine biology and fish behavior through cameras and other measurement tools that are installed on and outside the facade of the restaurant. They will be able to document the population, behavior, and diversity of species that live in the surrounding areas. The goal of the research is to collect data that can be programmed into machine learning tools that monitor the population dynamics of key marine species on a regular basis.

According to Snøhetta, Under is a story of contrasts: the contrast between the landscape and the sea as well as above and below. The project underscores the delicate ecological balance between land and sea and draws our attention to sustainable models for responsible consumption.

It emphasizes the coexistence of life on land and in the sea and introduces a new way of understanding our relationship with our surroundings – above the surface, under the water, and alongside the life of the sea.

“For most of us, this is a totally new world experience. It’s not an aquarium, it’s the wildlife of the North Sea. That makes it much more interesting. It takes you directly into the wildness,” Rune Grasdal, lead architect of Under, told Dezeen. “If the weather is bad, it’s very rough. It’s a great experience, and to sit here and be safe, allowing the nature so close into you. It’s a very romantic and nice experience.”

“The idea was to make a tube that would bring people from above sea level down under the sea,” Grasdal said. “That transition is easy to understand, but it’s also the most effective way to do it. It also feels secure, but you don’t feel trapped.”

Share on FacebookWow, i want to go there, like soon.... but my bank account said to go to work instead.
Actually, it should not be so bad: a flight to Stavanger or Kristiansand and a rental car will do the trick. And if you do not go in summer, prices in Norway can be quite reasonable.
Load More Replies...Very cool if this is your thing. But it looks very dark, claustrophobic and no thanks to me.
...and resembling a 'washed ashore casket' doesn't help the appetite.
Load More Replies...I understand the fact that this food is supposed to be special and extra delicious, but the proportions are just so small. The restaurant is beautiful, obviously, but this kind of "gourmet" food just seems so unfulfilling.
People who complain about this haven’t tried it. Yes one course is small but this is a five course meal at least. If it was bigger, you’d get full halfway through.
Load More Replies...*0* This is amazingly beautiful! I so want to go there. And the food looks amazing too!
Sounds cool until you realize cold water fish are not attractive, neither are the rocks. The colourful stuff is in the warm waters.
I also guess the view is rather boring.I prefer underwater restaurants in the Caribbean or South Sea it's sooo spectacular and colorful. But "Under" represents the Nordic, melancholic character in a interesting way
Load More Replies...At least being surrounded by water might help with the food looking so incredibly dry. Sprinkling most of it in bits really doesn't help.
This is a great concept, but the actual interior looks very cold, unappealing, unwelcoming, and uncozy to me. I don't like the fasionable decor of the last few years. Reminds me of the cold, utilitarian, unattractive decor of the 50s.
I agree. They were going for "natural beauty" apparently, but there's more to natural beauty than everything being made of natural wood and stone. It has a very unnatural aesthetic overall, especially with the hard edges.
Load More Replies...How on Earth did they build this without water getting in? Did they drain it later?
Yes, they filled it with water, then sank it. After it was plced on the seabed they emtied out the water, dried it and then strated the indoor work.
Load More Replies...I feel it looks terribly frigate and austere...including the food to be honest... but that's just my opinion.
Looks faboulous! But highly likely this restaurant will charge you single- or even double Michelin Star Prices ;-)
Not sure how I feel about the design. They could of captured more of the water I think. But I would still go
Don't know. I think 50% _ 50%. May be more water could be more interesting, but more dangerous as well. Anyway, spite of to be under the water is not for me, iI like the project. It is a rare proposal .
Load More Replies...Ok, an underwater restaurant where you can see nothing below the water, you can just say that you saw wooden walls.
Yeah. I like the idea a lot. Here in the U.S. it would be great to have similar around the Great Lakes, or other beautiful fresh water areas in the PNW or such. Here, the water seems so dark, unclear and barren. And as with all real estate, it's about location, location and location!
Load More Replies...Smooth and minimal. Very elegant. I wish there were more of these.
Cold, drab, depressing and clinical. Glad there's not more of these.
Load More Replies...Awesome! Too bad people will find what they dont like about it even when you put your heart and soul into your restaurant. I cant wait to go, see the unique atmosphere and taste the fine art-food.
According to Google: Norway has exported a limited amount of whale meat to the Faroes and Iceland. ... Since 2018, when the Norwegian whaling quota was increased by 30%,Norwegian whalers have been allowed to hunt a quota of 1,052 minke whales a year. https://www.dolphinproject.com/blog/is-norway-creating-their-own-killing-cove/ and https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/7233536/horrifying-moment-dolphins-are-slaughtered-by-laughing-fishermen-in-the-faroe-islands/
I mean, that's bad if true, but also not particularly relevant as I don't think the restaurant owners are the people doing this.
Load More Replies...Every time I see how creative humans are, it gives me hope! I'll never go there, but the fact that this exists is amazing
Restaurant looks cool, food looks overpriced and pretentious.
The Royal Norwegian Navy seem to have been REALLY fast on the franchise? ;-) Helge-Ings...aaecae.jpg
My wife and I was there and I can only recommend it at the very best. Not cheap, and you don`t visit because you are hungry😁 It is a special adventure and the atmosphere nail it. Competent staff which makes the day. There is a hotel just beside the restaurant which is perfect if you decide to go for the vine package which is matching with the "food". It is 18-course small portions of really something special from the ocean making the "dinner" and 9 different vines. Its perfect. Picture from when we left, and also showing some of whats on the "menu"👍 Snapchat-1...da428e.jpg
Please leave sea life alone. It is enough mess you had done on the land.
This Snohetta fangirl thinks it's yet another gorgeous project by them! Well done!
There is too little Glass underwater view area for all the trouble to build this. The Glass should have wrapped around the Dining area.
I remembered that there was a movie about a ship that drowned, but somehow people on it survived, sealed it off, and went on living there, even had kids, who never saw the surface. Some divers discovered it, and the main diver obviously fell in love with the girl, who was born "underwater"...Anyone else watched this?
Ah found it- Goliath Awaits. These photos reminded me of that movie!
Load More Replies...Not sure if I could order seafood, then eat it..in front of their friends and family. 😣
What Is A "Wine Pairing Dinner"? It is a multi-course dinner (e.g., appetizer, main course, dessert) in which an appropriate wine is served with each course. "Pairing" refers to treating the course and the wine as a "pair" that go together. https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/what-is-a-wine-pairing-dinner.344309/
Probaly insanely pricey to eat there... I'm not saying make it an all-you-can-eat, but perhaps more people would eat there if they could actually afford it... Been to fancy restaurants like this and always felt like the food was WAY too pricey and fancy... probably have to pay 50 € just for that one shrimp on the plate...
The inside is very stylish, but the outside looks out of this world ugly. I guess only Norway would have so many fjords and bays that they don't mind wasting one on a ugly block of concrete just so a handful of people have a mega-fancy dining experience.
It is awesome, having been wanting to come to Norway for a long time.
This is an outrageously expensive experiment on how to build and market a restaurant that caters exclusively to the richest few percents of people. The marketing seems to work BUT I call BS! If you want to interact with the environment in a sustainable way, then go by bike to the seashore, beach, forest, desert, oasis, glen, valley or mountain of your heart's desire, then have a picknick and go for a walk. Be sure to bring an extra garbage bag or two along to do some extra cleaning of the surroundings. Satisfaction guaranteed.
It doubles as a marine research facility, so not like it's specifically for fancy folk.
Load More Replies...They lost me at "Under proposes unexpected combinations of pronouns and prepositions." Knew it was going to be frou-frou before I even saw the unappetizing, expensive-looking food.
That sounds like a total mess of English. It/them/he/shes being under/over/around/etc. things in unusual combinations!? In my restaurant experience!?
Load More Replies...I love the concept, and the design is elegantly simple, I just have to giggle at some of the plates; just a cooked lobster on the plate... ooh so "modern". I l ike the building, the interior design, but to be under the water is not for me!!!
Not my cup of tea. The food looks awful and it seems so dark and twisted.
It's probably a multiple-course meal, so you'd sit down and get a bunch of those things.
Load More Replies...I can hear it now; "yeah, this place used to be a fancy schmancy restaurant til the leaks and smell got so out of control. Then the five people that used to eat here figured they were better off going to Red Robin."
Looks like a simple and clean restaurant. However, I would never attempt to eat at a place like that. Too much fear in me something would happen while I was in there.
The only hard part would be seeing a certain type of fish out the window while you are eating that type of fish.
If that sounds hard to you, you should think about it fully and not try and hide from it.
Load More Replies...WTF?!! If I go to an underwater restaurant, I’d be going cuz I want to see the beautiful sea creatures alive and swimming in their natural habitat, definitely NOT to see them dead on a plate!!!! Twisted advertising! I’d feel guilty eating there, but not if they only served vegan food!! They should rethink their business strategy! (And at least add some live fish or something in the window pics)! ❤️
I hear the filet mignon is actually pressed sewer rat.
I hear the filet mignon is actually cleverly concealed rat meat.
If you are going to the expense to create something as edgy as an underwater restaurant, why don't you invest in some comfortable chairs? If you think it is chique to have uncomfortable wooden chairs, you are full of c**p.
I’m sorry but what do you think edgy means? Because this certainly isn’t nor was it intended to be.
Load More Replies...They should server organic vegan food, it suits the location and dishes they are showing instead of seafood.
"So yeah, I went to this super-cool underwater restaurant in Norway. Had a BLT and a glass of water. Only $175.00!"
Let me guess...and to have a dinner over there you pay a month salary...and after you go for a mcdonald's because you still hungry...it's a beautiful restaurant,it's a lifetime experience but...
A meal there will cost around 2000 norwegian kroner = 235 USD. There is a reservation fee of 1000 kroner. They had 1200 reservations already a year ago....
