Irreplaceable Employee Asks For A Raise, Company Refuse Then Panic When They Don’t Show Up To Work
Asking for a pay raise may be really stressful, but sometimes, you just feel like you deserve it. And although many companies will do all they can to make their best employees motivated, productive and happy, meaning the wage increase is a no brainer, some choose to blatantly ignore their workers’ needs. And regret it later.
This is what happened when one Redditor, W12ZY, rightfully requested a raise because “due to high turnover, nobody else can do the work I do.” The company refused and said “if I want more money then I need to work more hours.” So the Redditor has had enough: “Today I didn’t go in and now they’re calling me in a panic because they can’t run properly without me there.”
In 20 minutes since W12ZY posted their story on the Antiwork subreddit, she received 12 calls from her boss desperately trying to reach her. Read the full story below and share your thoughts in the comments below!
The main employee leaves their company in panic after quitting cold turkey because they refused them a deserved pay raise

According to the Society for Human Resource Management, salary increase budgets at U.S. companies are slow to grow overall, with the average annual increase coming in at around 3% to 3.2%. This, however, doesn’t play to their advantage because the top reason workers quit their job for new ones is so they can make more money, suggests this PayScale survey. In fact, 25% of respondents said higher pay was the reason they sought a new job, followed by 16% who said it was because they were unhappy at their current organization.
Later, the author added some updates on the whole situation and it seemed like the company was really desperate to get them back at work
“The search for more pay is a very strong driver for employees who are considering leaving, but the most interesting part of our research shows that once employees decide to leave, they also want a more fulfilling job,” the PayScale Chief Economist Katie Bardaro explained the survey’s findings. “So, for employers looking to retain and attract the best talent, they not only need to get pay right but must also demonstrate to employees how they will provide them with work that is ultimately meaningful.”
But the employee was already on their way to a new job
No wonder 2021 has become the time of the “Great Resignation” as 55% of American workers say they’ve had direct colleagues voluntarily leave their organization within the past 6 months. An equal percent, 55%, wondered if their pay is enough since their colleagues left.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) released data that also showed that organizations have seen more employees departing than ever before. Nearly half, 49% of U.S. executives surveyed, reported that their organization had experienced much higher turnover than usual in the past six months. At the same time, the positions were open for longer as a whopping 84% of executives said they were unfulfilled for longer periods than before the COVID-19 pandemic.
And this is what people had to say about this incident

Share on Facebookwas in the same position last year, "negotiated" a pay increase over six months that still fell far short of what I deserved, at the same time I'd applied for a job with one of the market leaders in our industry who offered me a 40% pay increase - I'm working through my notice now and enjoying watching my current company panic while they work out how to replace me (11 years experience)
Kudos to you for giving notice and riding out your time. It was the decent thing to do!

Worst thing was they were "at-will" employees and gave them ample time to give them a counter but the hospital refused.

The biggest lie they want you to believe is that you are worthless and theyre almost like doing you a favor by letting you work for them. The world runs on human labor, employee are valuable, especially competent ones. The process to replace an employee can be very difficult. Even min wage workers. You lose 2 cashiers on a shift and its chaos. Places like factories where they absolutely know they need their people know this. Thats why while theyre very harsh work environments, they pay their people WELL. And mist of the time, all their employees provide are litteraly a pair of arms. 0 skill. For a business workers are essential, no workers no work. Honestly we need more walkouts, because its the fact that companies have convinced us that they dont need their employees, and beaten us down, that allows companies like uber to basically not pay their drivers at all, or make restaurants have their waiters rely on tips, or min wage sucking
So very true. When I was a team lead in IT, I had a very good software engineer on board for several years. He told me a story about his first job interview, which was with IBM. As he progressed through the interview process, they kept stressing to him over and over just how lucky he was to even get an interview with EYE-BEE-EMM and what a privilege it was for someone like him to be in such elite company. He was so disgusted that he couldn’t wait to get out of there and never looked back.

Don't know what BP is trying to do, but it sure looks like they want anyone who is underpaid leave their job and find better paid employment. They just forget to mention that anyone in the US has to consider that quitting also means losing things like health care insurance and pension. In civilised countries you can quit without worrying about these trivialities. But let's keep the myth that democratic socialism is diabolical going.
Who offers a pension in 2022? My retirement account since late ‘96 has been a 401k.

I'd like to add that situations like these are why no matter what, you NEVER, EVER, sign a non-compete agreement. Also, if you are an engineer, a developer, designer, etc, you NEVER, EVER sign any document stating that anything you create or develop while in their employ is the property of the company, even if it happens on your own time away from work.

I wonder how his next company feels about this. This guy can stop coming to work anytime without notice when his request for a rise is not accepted. A small company can't match the salary of bigger companies, that's a truth. If he thinks he's not paid enough and has better offer lined up, can he just leave professionally, hand over his works like everyone else, instead of causing drama and posting it online?
exactly. Why is everyone badmouthing the company? Not always it is possible to pay more. You can still behave like a professional and leave the job on a proper notice if you feel underpaid. Not showing up the next day just because they refused the pay raise is just childish.

Well, maybe like 3% stress (hard to say zero when sometimes you have a bad day). I no longer work nights/evenings Bc someone is in another time zone and they need to get their state license application in asap, no weekends, I don't worry or get calls at all hours, etc. when I'm done for the day, I'm done. I work from home (company provided all equipment) and I walk into my home office 5 min before clock in in pjs. In fact, I'm keeping more of my salary Bc I no longer use my car, I'm not spending money on breakfast or lunches or whatever. I'll poach everyone's employees just so they can experience what I do, Bc everyone should be happy and content with their jobs. If you're in Texas and looking for a job, let me know
OP: "Can I have a raise" Company: "No" OP: "ok, I magically have another job this afternoon and I've been keeping them hanging for a month just trying to see if you'll pay me more and they were cool with that." I'm calling bullsh*t on this story.
He didn't magically have a new job lined up. He was looking for a new job because he wanted a better pay, had some interviews, got an offer. He liked the old place so he gave them a chance to up his pay, they didn't. Some companies are willing to wait for their new employees if they are worth it. From what I've read, even people that accept a pay rise to stay with the current employer eventually leave. Because deep down it's never just about the money.

I had similar experience quite a few times. One time we were given additional task. After a couple of months there was a salary review and we were asked in what ways we could do more to get the raise. We asked "what about THIS task?" "But you already are doing it!"
They were already out the door. Easy to just walk out when you know another paycheck is coming. Not overly brave to deserve an article. They just skipped the two weeks notice.
In the same company, but my new position allowed me to give a bonus to anyone. So I gave a bonus to the person who took over my duties, knowing full well he would get a sub par review due to office politics. Fairly sure the next employee review is going to make s**t for the previous management hard when he was rewarded.
TBH i think that the OP is as much of a a rse as the company. If he had any brains he would have told them that he was looking else ware because he believed he deserved more money and use that as a bargaining tip. The way he decided to leave was irresponsible. As always only ever see one side of the story.,
Totally agree with you. If the company could not provide a raise, say if the next pay increment would be his direct manager's salary

High turnover means it's a crappy company to work for. If the company wants to keep them, they can either find someone else to do the job or give the valuable employee a raise. Their choice. It isn't "blackmail", it's knowing your worth.
