Hello fellow humans,
I’m part of a vulnerable species called polar bears but I’m a really friendly specimen of my kind. I even go by the name of Giraffe and I live by the Arctics where I have a lot of friends, for now.
I’m 6 years old, which makes me somewhat of a teenage polar bear (did you know that we live up to 25 years?), but don’t get fooled by my young age, because I’ve already learned the issues that the environment faces everyday. I’m talking about pollution, climate change, deforestation and so many others that put our lives into jeopardy, and by ‘ours’ I mean yours too, buddy.
Join me in this new journey I’m on. I will tell you more about the environment, the Issues it’s facing, how to overcome them and what can we do to make Earth a better place. Let’s fight the good fight!

And certain types of recycling are extremely energy and resource intensive and don't really do much to help once all factors are taken into account (including the energy/resources that go into collection and the plant itself etc).

OK, I said this few times and I will say it again. Try to be local. There are farmers near you, you just have to find them. There are people willing to grow hemp, linen or cotton to make fabric, give them a chance. If you support them, they will support you. About five years ago I checked what I have from China, Vietnam or Korea. I was shocked. Now most of my clothes are from less than 100 kilometers from my home. 40% of my food is from less than 20 kilometers. Just by buying local food we reduced plastic waste by 80% and paper waste by 60%. Is it cheaper? Something is, something isn't. We have to think more about what we buy. And I have to mention meat. Mostly it is about same price range, beef is bit more expansive (you know, this guy has all cows outside, on grass. Still it is only about 10% more). And the taste is two levels better.
That's cool that you can find so much food from so close to home because most people can't do that. There's a study that shows that the total amount of vehicular pollution is actually worse when the average person goes to a farmers market because most people live quite far from one so all those aggregate trips for a tiny amount of food is overall worse than a giant truck travelling very far to deliver a giant boatload of food to the grocery store down the street from you.
Load More Replies... I'm very environmentally conscious but posts like this just p**s me of. There are so many errors that they discredit the real, relevant information. Recycling aluminum does not "create" energy. People need TP and trees are renewable (maybe say don't bleach it etc, but the post as-is is useless). I also don't buy that the average office employee throws out more than a pound of paper every single work day. Glass is inert so an intact bottle doesn't harm anything in any way. And don't even get me started on the polar bear numbers debate. The WWF and polarbearsinternational.org both fail to make a case that numbers are declining, let alone a specific decrease in a specific # of years. And if you downvote me, please cite your source that proves I'm wrong.
Upvote! I have been racking my brain trying to come up with what they meant by recycling one can "creates" energy... ummm. Nope. It takes energy to recycle. Makes me question the whole thing.

Think waste management is done backwards in a lot of countries. We need to have a degradable (food waste) bin and an everything else bin. Which is then taken and sorted so that deciding which stuff is recyclable and what is not is done by professions. Governments need to take more responsibility for ensuring that recycled goods are used and promoted IMHO

Every little thing you can do helps. Try to use less toilet paper - but this doesn't mean you have to go around with "skid marks" in your underpants. Cut beef out of your diet. Walk or use public transit when you can. Combine trips. Sign petitions, contact your elected officials, march and protest.
Most of the world with the exception of the USA uses a bidet, it's much cleaner.

Actually, To me I think we are way behind, we should have started this a very long time ago, as for plastic, like many new ideas seem good at the time, then it's discovered to be very bad for our health, or end up in the landfill, Something I spoke about on another post, why are the cruise ships allowed to dump their garbage in the seas or oceans ??? Great effort is being done to clean our waterways, two steps forward, five back !!!
We need more people like you. In my opinion, the best choice is to think globally and act locally. Reduce using plastic, replace regular light bulbs with LED, recycle and reuse anything that you can. Support your local farmers. This is the only planet that has a beer! We did not inherit Earth from our ancestors, we borrowed Earth from our children!
@ Ben Smith - seriously? Talk to China? What do you think the Chinese are doing? Sitting around and farting out air pollution? A good proportion of the air pollution arose from production of goods for export.
In my city, in Canada, some stores are now using paper shopping bags with handles !!!
Me too. The ones with handles are a lesser evil, I guess. I looked it up and couldn't find one single reputable independent source that could show that plastic was worse than paper. Paper takes more energy to produce, more water to produce (by a huge margin), is considerably larger so there's that much more transportation required, get reused basically zero times, and rip apart and are horrible to use. It's empty virtue signalling to make people use paper if they don't have a reusable bag with them. (not everybody carries a reusable with them on the bus in their pocket in the off chance they might visit a shop on the way home).

Many of us would like to make the right choice, however in some ares it's not easy, This is a great post and I would like to see it posted periodically as a reminder or for those who missed this, we could print this and put it up at work places etc; I hope everyone does their best to make a difference, there are a tremendous amount of things to be changed by the companies, unfortunately, we can't turn back the clock before all of the plastic, but the oil spills brake my HEART, to know of the suffering and death, WHY are cruise ships allowed to dump the garbage !!!
We all are responsible for this not much but a little and it's sadder when people know about those little things that could be taken care of but just ignore and doesn't give a damn. Feeling so bad about this :(
